Okay, everyone seems to like dissing Mystic Quest, so I figured why not make a thread dedicated to getting to the bottom of its problems. Let's talk about what exactly IS wrong with MQ? Here are some discussion starting ideas I had:
The battle system (as in, battle command system)
The battle style (viewed from behind and turn based)
Dungeon exploration
World map travel
Game over (unlimited retries)
Inventory (items and the management thereof)
Graphics (characters, backgrounds, monsters, etc.)
Music
Storyline (or, as everyone likes to say, the lack thereof)
Characters (personality and background)
Dialogue
Weapons
Magic
The fact that there's a jump button
Monster encounters
Respawning treasure in chests
So feel free to complain away, but remember, constructive criticism makes you sound like less of a jerk, and helps get to the bottom of a debate more efficiently.

My only complaint concerning MQ is that the combat is too monotonous. Of course, the prevalent "bash until weak, heal, continue bashing" method is nothing new, but this game doesn't even have the Active Time system to make it more dynamic.
However, I like how the monsters change in appearance as their HP gets worn down (especially Pazuzu--guy gets ANGRY), and it's great that the different weapons also serve, each in a unique way, to get around obstacles outside of battle--the axe for cutting down trees, the claw for climbing walls, etc.

One of the few things I disliked about Mystic Quest were the battlefields.
Ten battles. That's over and over and over again the same battle. Then there'd sometimes be two battlefields in a row. And if memory serves me right you were required to finish some of these for a crest. Battlefields were just cheap substitute for no random encounters on the world map.

Honestly I figured more people would have spoken up about story/characters. That's kind of an easy target for this game because of its simplified nature.

As for characters, I just want to know what Reuben's deal is. He wears what looks like some tricked out colorful armor from the future, and then you have his dad, Arion, who dresses like Indiana Jones. Confounding.
Then again, I like that Spencer and the Dark King have some sort of personal rivalry that is not explained even slightly. When he tells you to go Doom Castle, he implies that he has reason to "pay back" the Dark King, but then never says another word about it. And, of course, not even the ending reveals a thing. It's all just so lovably shoddy.

The game was so bad it was good. It was a fun simple little game and worth a play. I could think of many worse games.

It made sense to me. Kids ALWAYS rebel against their parents. I guess Reuben decided to rebel by having a fashion sense....... or something......
