I did it now! And I have to say that IE really is much better than Firefox. It's a LOT quicker. Still, I'll try Firefox for a while, and see if it really is as good as people make out.

EDIT: OK it's started going a lot quicker. Wow.

I'm pretty sure Bleys taught us that just because you have a link to something, doesn't automatically make it true.

I'm just desperately waiting for people to put the viruses that affect IE on the Firefox download site, so that the millions of IE users who want to change over to Firefox will just be shot down in their tracks.

It's funny, I was about to comment on this thread about how IE works just fine and dandy, thankyouverymuch. But then my little cousin came over and messed it up so that IE flings a login screen at me whatever I do.

So I grab Firefox and figure that I'll be forced to use it forever. But then everything cleaned itself up, and IE works just like it did. But now I have no excuse not to give Firefox a fair shot. I'm using as we speak. Ca-razy.

Internet Explorer is the opiate of the masses, sirs! Cleary you understand not the unending oppression of the proletariat at the hands of those who own the means of production and shear the fruits of the workers' labor from the trees in their very backyard! You live a false consciousness that fetishizes the point of exchange rather than the labor involved, sirs, the only answer to which is enlightened revolution!

"It's not that consumers are so loyal to Microsoft, but more they are apathetic,"

I agree with this. IE is just hassle free compared to all the others that you have to download a MILLION plugins just to make it run and then theres still sites that won't work, plus they're slow on opening unless you have a fastass PC, and even then its still slow on opening, though its faster and more accurate on loading pages, I'll admit.

I use IE and will continue to because I have a dialup connection and it very annoying to have to download a ton of files to get a browser to semi-work, and then it still won't load most of the sites I visit, while IE is compatible with anything and everything.

So what I'm trying to say is IE may not be great but Firefox and Mozilla suck far worse.

All I can say is you all say how its hard to get virus' for Firefox and etc but thats because their minority browsers, if you were a hacker you wouldn't program a virus or spyware program to attack say half a million firefox browsers when theres over 2 billion IE browsers to attack.

If Firefox or Mozzilla or whatever became the browser of choice it would prove to be just as vunerable, its because its not widespread that it doesn't suffer.

As for calling people idiots for still using IE, well, I think it's perfectly justified if they know the problems in IE, are able to change browser (ie they're not using someone else's PC), essentially have no reason to not demote IE to minimal usage for viewing the crappiest of sites or work practices, yet continue to refuse to make the change :monster: :cookie: :cookie:

Friday's patch doesn't <i>fix</i> the problem, but just puts a well, patch on IE. The exploit still exists, the patch just disables what is used to exploit it: the ADODB.Stream ActiveX Control.

Think of it as using a bike and you realize there's a leak in your tube. MS keeps giving you patches for your tube for each time you find a hole. It kinda works, but eventually, you need to replace the tube altogether.

There's even an <a href="http://slate.msn.com/id/2103152/">article on MSN</a> about ditching IE.

Ever since I stopped looking at porn and set up a firewall, I've had no problems with IE at all. And I've only ever had two problems prior to that in years upon years.

Does Firefox have all the abilities for things that IE does yet? I tried it back when it was firebird or whatever and it sucked because it couldn't do everything I wanted it to. I remember that I couldn't view some sites like HSBC, where I do my banking.

I just use IE and Firefox. Best of both worlds. Might make them breed. Who knows.

Dr Unne
07-05-2004, 10:16 PM
If virus writers targeted Firefox, it would NOT be as bad as IE. Firefox doesn't auto-execute programs without asking you. Firefox doesn't use ActiveX, which serves two purposes in life: Windows Update and running viruses. Firefox doesn't randomly reset its security settings without asking you. Firefox isn't half-embedded into the Windows kernel. Firefox is open source; when a problem pops up, someone can fix it themselves, rather than wait a few months and see if MS throws you a bone. And MS doesn't give a crap about browser users, because it has the entire market in its pocket. IE hasn't been significantly updated in what, 3 or 4 years?

And of course from a web designer's point of view, IE is a piece of absolute trash. I'd tell people to not use it for that reason alone, even if it WAS easier/better to use or something, which is isn't.

IE is just hassle free compared to all the others that you have to download a MILLION plugins just to make it run and then theres still sites that won't work, plus they're slow on opening unless you have a fastass PC, and even then its still slow on opening, though its faster and more accurate on loading pages, I'll admit.

Have you ever actually used Firefox at all? By default with no plugins Firefox is far more feature-rich than IE. Javascript control, popup blocking, tabs, ltype-ahead find, Google search bar, etc. Opera is even more so. Extensions in Firefox can bring it up to the level of Opera. Could you refer specifically to one or two of the millions of plugins required to make Firefox work properly for you?

Firefox opens in less than a second on my computer. Almost instantaneously in Windows, and slower in Linux actually.

Does Firefox have all the abilities for things that IE does yet? I tried it back when it was firebird or whatever and it sucked because it couldn't do everything I wanted it to. I remember that I couldn't view some sites like HSBC, where I do my banking.

Use Firefox for everything except those sucky pages coded only to work with IE. A personal page, I can see someone not spending the time to test it. A professional page with hired web designers, making pages that only work in IE? There's no excuse. There are less and less of those sites in existence as time goes on, thankfully. Code to standards and your web page will work in IE, Firefox, cell phones, and whatever else you want to throw at it. "My bank's site works" isn't a strength of IE, it's a weakness of the morons who made that site. If you could name another "ability" IE has that Firefox doesn't, that'd be neat.

EDIT: Just saw that MSN article about how Firefox is better than IE. That's sadly amusing.
