Fool this is helluv early.

Two tight ends? 10 points for a fifty yard field goal? 30 for a defenseive shutout? Hmm.

too many players on the team. some interesting scoring. then again, I set the scoring last year and I won, so I suppose it's only fair someone else get to do that. I'll join, of course.

it's not head to head?

Del Murder
07-09-2004, 03:31 AM
With all this time perhaps we can make the perfect league (ie the one where I win :)). I think we should use this topic to see what type of scoring people want. Here are my thoughts:

1. We should do head-to-head again.

2. Defeses were scored too highly last year.

3. 10 points for a filed goal is waaay too much. I like how it was last year: 3 points for all field goals except 50+, which were four points. Plus I think we were deducted for FG misses, also good, but I think misses from 50+ yards should not count against us (the scenario I'm thinking of is where the team just puts one up there to end a half kind of like the shot from half court to end a basketball quarter).

4. I can barely think of ten fantasy worthy tight ends, let alone 20!

5. Too many bench spots, though I do like having four receivers. It allows you to play some of the more unheralded guys.

Go Argonauts!!! :p

eestlinc

last year we did all field goals worth three except 50+ were worth four. All FG misses were -1.

Del Murder
07-09-2004, 03:41 AM
I like that because it rewarded kickers for being accurate and having a strong leg, but it won't allow them to be a superstar, which they shouldn't be. 50+ misses should not be counted, however.

eestlinc

as long as the scoring favors Priest Holmes and everyone else is too stupid to draft him, I'll be ok.

16 is an awful lot, but if that many people want to play.

I like last year that we had 'divisions' even though I happened to play the first and second placed teams twice. =/

Kirobaito

I've decided that I'll pass. I won't possibly have enough time to do it once school starts. I'll probably not even have enough time for the internet at all, what with marching band every day and 4 AP classes. Plus I'll be at school when the draft occurs. >.<

eestlinc
07-11-2004, 05:02 AM
i don't think a free league lets us customize to that level, having six playoff teams. a playoff bye would be nice, though, since obviously I'll be getting one.

The Captain
07-11-2004, 07:56 AM
That's quite a shame Kirobaito!

In reality, for a fantasy team, all you really need is 15 minutes to set things up properly once the season gets under way. Also, seeing as its football, you'd probably only need to update once or twice a week.

Still, I see where you're coming from, having been through marching band for 4 years and AP classes for 2, way back when in my high school days. I'd warrant that fantasy sports could be a nice way to unwind after long days of rehearsal, competitions, and studying.

Remember, you've got more than a month to decide anyway!

Just as a side note, in light of recent events, I'd like to say that sports, while great as entertainment and as a release from the anxiety of everyday life, are not everything and it's so very important to realize how precious life itself is.

Take care all.

We're going to set up a second league, so we'll be sure to let you know about that one when it's set up. :)

Draft order should be random and not based on how well your team did last year. If this was a keeper league I would see how that would work, but we start from scratch every year and should not be penalized in the draft for being a good manager.

14? Damn.

CloudDragon
07-20-2004, 05:35 AM
They way I see it Del is that it still works. Being that you were a good manager, with lower draft picks and not getting the best players, you have to work a bit more to still stay on top. If you are a good manager that shouldn't be a problem, and you should still end up on top, see?

Del Murder
07-20-2004, 06:17 AM
The problem I have is that I will never be able to get a first pick under this system. I don't mind having pick 10 or 12 or whatever, I just want a chance to get a guy like Holmes or Tomlinson and not have to pick Terrell Owens every time.

I will be in the top 5 teams regardless of my draft position. The reverse order every round negates most of the significance of the original order. Which is why it should be random.

Also, I got fourth last year.

Colonel Kirby
07-20-2004, 02:32 PM
Looks like it's already been set to random. Or you could just save yourself the worry and pick anyone from the Chargers who isn't a running back since they'll be avoided like the plague.

The rules of this league is you can only have players from one team. 4 people have signed up so far, so that's four teams that are taken (Chargers, Seahawks, Lions and Redskins). I haven't set up the point system yet, because I want some help on that from one of the smarter fantasy players (eest or del please? ;) )The max teams is 12 so far.

What are these fantasy sports that everyone speaks of around here?

Del Murder
09-20-2004, 06:10 AM
In fantasy sports a bunch of people get together and draft teams of real players from that sport. Then they get points based on how those players do in the games. You can trade and pick up/drop players as well. It's really fun if you are a fan of the sport.

The Captain

Yeah, and just my luck after I recommend Stecker to Proto I find out I have two injured RBs. :(

The Captain
09-21-2004, 06:18 AM
Well sir, don't lose heart yet. If football season can teach you one thing, it's to expect the unexpected. Some RB will burst out of nowhere and have a solid year, the key is all in finding him. You've more than succeeded in doing that in baseball, so I have little to no doubt you'll find a way.

The real challenges are coming, as bye weeks wreck havoc on our rosters.

Take care all.

Del Murder
09-21-2004, 06:23 AM
Yeah, I have the Dallas-Minnesota bye coming up soon and I'm not sure I can carry most of my current roster and still be competitive against Spuuky. But I can't think about that right now. Maybe I can trade for a backup someone has stashed away. James likely won't miss more than a week.

I think it's been proven that I'll always find a way. :)

The Burning Legion - 1171

So I actually had a winning record though my opponenets scored more than I did. After me and Spiff, no one's schedule came even close to that difficulty. The point I'm trying to make here is that it is happening all over again. On Tuesday I will give you the updated stats from this year.

Hmm. Judging from the spreadsheet, I went through a lot of low-scoring affairs last year... So much for that this year!

Would you say it matters, though, that the scoring in this league is different than the one from last year?

Del Murder

Would you say it matters, though, that the scoring in this league is different than the one from last year?
Very much so. I haven't compiled the averages yet but just by looking I can see that the scoring is much higher this year.

EDIT: Last year's avereage was 89.29. After two weeks this year's average is 109.05. So you can already tell.

An interesting thing to look at is the variance of each teams scores, measured by standard deviation. Rocko's team didn't score many total points, but his variance was one of the very lowest, meaning he didn't srtay much from his average from week to week. That is one of the main reasons he went to the championship game, while others, like you and myself, fell short. I'll be sure to post those numbers sometime, because it is all very interesting.

eestlinc

Scoring is much higher this year due to completions and no penalty for missed FG. Plus, we have an extra WR this year. I think the scoring this year favors QBs and WRs too much, but then again, that's where the NFL is headed.

Del Murder
10-01-2004, 02:22 AM
I agree that QBs get too much but I like extra points for WRs, they need them to stay competitive with the backs.

For some reason I can't upload Excel files to show you guys the stat data from last year. Is there an wasy way to convert Excel into an HTML table or something I can upload?

Del Murder

For those of you interested here are the numbers from last year and through week 4 of this year. Notice the correlation between standard deviation (which measures variance around the mean, or average) and teams that did well. The most obvious case being Rainbow Warriors. His average score wasn't too impressive but the low std dev. indicated that he was right around that average every week, putting him in every game.

Notice this year who is in first after week 4 (me) and how low my standard deviation is (7). Consistency is the key to winning in this head to head format. Four weeks isn't enough to get a good read on it though.

It's been quite the rough season for me. My best player thus far is Brian Westbrook and he only has 60 points. I blame it all on the enigma that is Michael Vick(tied with Tim Rattay with 54.5 fantasy points). His team is 4-0 and yet he has pathetic fantasy points. And the Deion Branch situation is bothering the hell out of me. Either he has a broken toe or he got shot in the head. If Billicheck waits for week 10 to put him on IR or something, I'll kill. Meanwhile, I've gone against Brady, McNabb, Hassleback, and Leftwich all in their best weeks so far. I'm getting outscored by an average of 43 points per game. I'm the only owner without a player on the can't cut list. No luck.

My number one pick, Clinton Portis is stinking up the field right now. His first carry this year was pretty nice, but it has been downhill since.

Let's see how the week goes. If Moss looks like he won't play I can give you Hoover or Morris for a receiver. Neither of which are great but it is better than the options you have now. Even if dandy Randy does suit up I could use a good defense, which you have two of. I'd say that is your best bargaining chip right now so use it wisely, and don't feel pressured to accept every trade that comes your way.

Barring some disaster like Manning out for season, ProtoStars should waltz into second. He has tough games in Cap and Strider left, but Manning should be able to win at least one of those. I don't have much faith in Kelpto, his team is sporadic and he just seems to get lucky. But other than RSL he has some easy opponents left. He's the wild card. RSL has it worst of all. He still has me, you, and 4, and I don't think he'll get 2 of those three, leaving him with 7 losses and out of the running.

Cap, Fresno, and Spiff all have good points and they will play spoiler for the top teams. Cap is on a win streak and might get fourth. In fact, I'm betting on it.

Final standings prediction:

1. Oakland Enforcers
2. The ProtoStars
3. Leif Eriksons
4. 2 Minute Drillers

The key will be points. If you or Cap can tie 4's record, you'll have the points advantage and get the spots. This is what I think will happen.

If you make it to the playoffs you are in great shape with the Chargers playing Indianapolis and KC in the last two weeks, with possible playoff berths on the line. I don't know what I'd do if you ended up pulling this off again...

The Captain
11-23-2004, 07:11 AM
I think finally something might be going my way as I've lost two games by less than 3 points and now have finally won one by 3.

If Martin or Green can stay healthy, I think I can at least play spoiler for the playoffs. As for getting in there myself, that's too far ahead for me. I'm going to try and take it week by week, and just continue trying to play matchups. I never would have imagined I'd be able to pull this week out after both Martin and Green got injured.

Take care all.

I'm glad I'm not a part of that shootout. I'm still learning. This year I tried to build a team that is consistent, and I did that. I also happened to have the most total points. Let's see how far those will take me.

I sat around brooding over Larry Johnson all morning and finally caved and put him in. I wonder if I had been around doing that over Plummer that it would have been the same result. We'll never know. Brooks better drop at least a 20 for me to have a shot. If I can keep Duece out of the end zone and limit Gates to one TD (fat chance) then I will win. Otherwise, I might win. Del Murder
12-28-2004, 01:36 AM
I agree with Riz on that, even though it's more fun when we play every week. Most leagues do it the way he suggested.

I have never before seen a team with such great matchups in consecutive weeks as eest has here. In the playoffs, no less. I purposely drafted a team with players on different teams (kickers don't count) to further my quest for the most consistent team. I succeeded, but consistency doesn't work as well in the short run. If San Diego or New England faced Baltimore or the Bills or something then he'd be screwed, but no, it had to be the Chiefs and San Franfreakingcisco. Both home games, no less.

Enough about that, though. I still need to keep McNabb quiet before this potential blockbuster of a championship match is even on the card yet.

eestlinc
12-28-2004, 01:37 AM
it's just an added challenge. I'm not so worried though. I got Kevin Jones for this specific situation, although I doubt I'll need him.

Anyway, if my players face weak teams this week, it probably means I faced tougher teams earlier. Chargers-Chiefs is intradivision so it makes perfect sense. Pats-Niners is a bit of a lucky draw though, but you think I didn't know that game was there when I got Dillon and Branch? Considering how the Pats lit up the Jets (loving it!) I don't think it really matters who they face.

I certainly hope not, but it's not like the Chargers have much to play for. I guess the pleasure of crushing the Chiefs is enough. And LT needs another consecutive game with a touchdown.

You really couldn't script it better than this. Teams my players face in week 17:

Chiefs (QB, RB, K)
Cardinals (WR x 2)
Browns (WR)
Niners (WR, RB, DEF)
Chargers (TE)

and if I need some backups:

Redskins (WR x 2)
Titans (RB)
Seahawks (QB)

Del Murder
12-28-2004, 01:49 AM
I think the Chargers will try to get as many wins as they can to rub it in everyone's faces. I wouldn't expect LT to play the whole game, but a half at home vs. KC is better than a whole game at Baltimore.

Here are some things I made. The first is the completed stats for the fantasy season. The playoff teams are highlighted in blue. Compare your stats with where you ended up and see what you need to improve on next year.

The second and third attachments are a more in-depth analysis I did for the championship game between eestlinc and myself. I ran the numbers for each of our players and extrapolated their week 17 score based on season average, last four week average, opponent's average given to their position (measured by % of offense they consist of), opponent's average over the last four weeks, and average based on home/away status. I used a variety of different ways to get their projected score based on those things (the last five columns of the Reg17 sheet), then averaged those scores to get 'The Score'. As you can see my analysis has eest favored by 6 points. Let's see what happens Sunday!

I am very proud of this project. It likely won't tell much about the upcoming games, but to freely manipulate these numbers and create such fluidity of the data is closer to my idea of art than any drawing or song parody I have ever made. Enjoy, and good luck champ.

(if either of us changes our final lineups I will adjust the scores and reattach, since there is still a day left)

Postseason Prediction Time!

Vikings - Packers
Rams - Seahawks
Jets - Chargers
Broncos - Colts

I like the Pack, Rams, Bolts and Colts to advance because in the three home teams cases, they are superior to their competition.

The only way the Viks win is if Favre has a bad game which I don't see happening and if the Viks actually show some heart in a big game. As for the Jets, Curtis Martin is a Hall of Famer hands down, but Pennington isn't right and the Chargers might be the most complete of the wild card teams, so I don't see the Chargers losing here. Finally, the Colts will win this game because the Broncos think they have a shot, and in reality, they can't stop Peyton Manning, heck, they had a tough time stopping Jim Sorgi early on, so I forsee a repeat of last year, though the score may be a bit closer.

Now, for the mild upset. The Rams are on a high right now and Bulger, Holt and Bruce are clicking while the Seahawks are a mess. Alexander exposed his ego and I think this will seriously hurt any chances they have, plus the Rams just seem to have their number.

Take care all.

RSL
01-04-2005, 02:02 AM
I predict the exact same! I kind of like the Rams for some reason. I guess I became attached to them this year with Bulger as my QB. I think they will beat Seattle fairly easily.

Packers/Vikings are my two least favorite teams. I predict the Packers to win but I can't cheer for either one.

Colts/Broncos. I just can't see the Colts losing to them when they play their best guys.

Chargers/Jets. I don't know much about the jets, but the Chargers are having a season that I could only dream of my favorite team having. I think they keep it going at least one more week.
