This thread is about America's lack of 'u's in thier words along with other such perfections and why it's so much better that way.

Discuss.

The metric system IS superior to what we use. As for the adding of letters, yeah, that's a bunch of baloney.

American spelling of some words suck.

We didn't add a letter. It's you guys who were too lazy and removed it. Duh.

Removing a letter and getting everyone to recognize it is more work so its you people that added it!

ITS COLOR! NOT colour. American English rocks on so many levels.

More people in the world actually speak "English" as opposed to "American English" so HA! We win. :twak:

SEMI-COLONS FOR LIFE.

Takara
07-28-2004, 12:55 AM
Semi-colons are far more superior.

*high-fives Psychotic* That's the spirit! :D

edczxcvbnm
07-28-2004, 12:58 AM
Yeah but they are useless in all reality. Semi-colons are there to make people who know how to use them look smart. Anyplace you would use one you could put a comma or a period there depending on the situation.

THE COLON however just has to be used when it is needed. Its like an ass-kicking machine in the English language(either one damn it).

Just speaking out of wackyness....since America has no language STANDARD, why are we forced to take english in school? Why not force use to take french or german instead? There is no standard so does it really matter?

Psychotic
07-28-2004, 12:59 AM
But if you look at it, the second "o" in colon is pronounced differently than the second one in "color" so it should be spelt colour. Or maybe it's pronounced like that with weird American accents, I don't know :D

edczxcvbnm
07-28-2004, 01:01 AM
Yeah but you say it the same as in 'ON' and 'OR' so it makes sense. You don't spell it OUR because its a different word entirely. It makes perfect sense. I'm not out of order...the whole frickin' system is outta order!

Psychotic
07-28-2004, 01:03 AM
I don't say colour as "or" though. It's more "cuh-lur" than "cuh-lor" :D

edczxcvbnm
07-28-2004, 01:05 AM
Well we say it col-OR mother :love::love::love:a :D

I see the problem stems from the crappy accents outside of america, although america still has the crappiest of them all....the horrid Southern Accent.

Psychotic
07-28-2004, 01:08 AM
I see the problem stems from the crappy accents outside of america.

It doesn't so much stem as originate seeing as there were English accents before American ones. American ones are a corruption of the original English ones, and so therefore so is the language.

Loony BoB
07-28-2004, 12:35 PM
The really dumb thing about writing 'color' instead of 'colour' is that you made it even more inaccurate. It should be culler. Which, conveniently, has a u.

Whenever I see 'color' I think of colon as well. Just out of curiosity, do you guys have the same sounds (aside from the r and n) when you say those two words?

Don't even get me started on the fence, defence, defense issue. Totally inconsistent. It should be fence and defence or fense and defense. The words, apart from the 'de' (which can be said in two different way depending on what definition of defence you are using), are said in exactly the same way.

I think a European said it best when he looked at both languages and said that English is all messed up and American English messed it up even more.

I type the words that can either be typed with a "U" or without, the "U" way. I don't put the "R" infront of the "E" though.

R in front of the E is awful. Rye. ;) But yeah, I don't think many people I know use centre instead of center. I work for the largest IT company in the UK, let alone Europe, and it's called Computacenter, not Computacentre. So yay.

Mo-Nercy

Colour Honour Cheque...

I tend not to spell things the American way unless it looks better that way (which it rarely does) but the one exception I can think of is the world "Jail" where the alternative, non-american way of spelling it is "Gaol" which honestly, is really stupid looking.

Baloki

No. We say it Cul-or and Col-on(this one is just like it is spelled...go figure). Completely different words and a completely different way of pronouncing them.

We say cul-or. We prounounce or and our differently also, so when we say col-or that is how it sounds for the most part also.

Crapulence.

I think that the only real advantage 'Proper' English has over American English is it's use of 'Aluminium' over that god-awful 'Aluminum'. Everything else is simply a matter of personal preference.

Well I'd rather piss everybody off and turn all "-er", "-or" and "-our" endings into "a". Color/Colour/Culler/flapjacks = colla. Just pretend I'm from Baa Haabaa and we'll be in business.

I have southern accent, and it's better than ed's non-existent southern accent. So what then?

He's right, it's really freaky too. I wouldn't be surprised if there are about ten accents in the UK for every accent in the US. It's scarey. o_o; I like NZ, where there's like... two that you can barely tell apart.
