Under the Status menu, on the list of status effects, towards the bottom one of the effects listed is "Peerless". What the hell is that? It's not Darkness, because Darkness is listed at the end. Is it a mistranslation or something?

It's a status which makes you nearly invincible. It voids all positive damage done and prevents most (if not all) statuses. The only way to kill you while in Peerless is with Cait Sith's Slots. It is only obtainable through Aeris's Planet Protector and Great Gospel Limit Breaks.
And Magic Materia Shield.

Thanks. It was driving me mad wondering about it.

Shield is an entirely different status.

There's also that "Slow-numb" status in there. I don't think I've ever seen it actually used in battle. I've seen Slow, but no Slow-numb.

Slow-numb is the status that Gagighandi (for instance) puts you into with its Stone Stare attack. It is the status where, after thirty units of time, you will become Petrified.

Oh, that! Now I remember, but I haven't fought that thing in...well...since the first time I've played the game . Ever since then, I just steer clear of that area the best I can.
Shield is an entirely different status.
Good point. :p

Peerless makes your characters glow yellow-ish as the Planet's holy light is surrounding and protecting them. Only Aeris' limit breaks Planet Protector and Great Gospel can give you this status. I think you're invincible to everything while under Peerless. Physical attacks always miss and magic attacks do 0 damage. It's similar to FF8's Invincible status. Of course, you can only use the status to your advantage on Disc 1. However, I used a cheat to fight Emerald Weapon with Aeris in my party and had her use Great Gospel, and all attacks used by Emerald Weapon (Emerald Shoot, Emerald Beam, Revenge Stamp) and its eyes did 0 damage or missed. Emerald never used Aire Tam Storm while my party was in Peerless, so I'm not sure how well Peerless blocks that. I'll also have to try fighting Safer Sephiroth with Aeris again and see if Peerless causes even Super Nova to do 0 damage.
Shield isn't the same as Peerless. Your characters won't be glowing, and the status lasts for a lot shorter time than Peerless. Shield also doesn't protect you from stronger magic attacks (read: useless in the final battle), it takes loads of MP and it can only be cast on one person at a time. Use Aeris' limit breaks for Peerless instead, and when you can't use them anymore, use Big Guard, that protects your party from all kind of attacks, lasts longer than Shield and gives everyone Haste too.

I used a GS to always be in Peerless status, and yes, EVERY attack in the game will do nothing to those in Peerless status. Actually, even healing items and magic will do nothing (except Elixers and Megalixers, as they just do a full recovery, instead of doing a numerical specific value of restoration).

Jolts: Will Petrification, instant Death and Level X Death spells hit your party members under Peerless status?

And does Haste have something to do with how fast Barrier and MBarrier wear off? When I use the Barrier materia it lasts a long time but when I use Big Guard it wears off fairly quickly.

Yeah, it does.

Nope. Absolutely nothing will effect you (at least, nothing I've tested this on, which is quite a bit), except Elixers and Megalixers, but those are good things :D. The one down side is, if you are weak when put into Peerless, then the only way to cure yourself is to use an Elixer or Megalixer, but those are hard to come by in disc1 (which makes Great Gospel all that much better than Planet Protector :D), but since I've never seen Cait Siths slots on that instant death thing (or the instant win, for that matter), we'll just have to trust that Omnipotent Archmage knows what s/he's talking about.
