ffix was supposed to be a "return 2 the old ff's", right?wat happened to red mages, summoners with horns, and time mages?square sort of just combined a whole bunch of classes into a couple. would you guys want to see a real nex gen game that really went back to the roots?wat would it be like?

ffix was supposed to be a "return 2 the old ff's", right?Yep, that's what the creators said.:)
wat happened to red mages, summoners with hornsALL the FFIX summoners have horns, except Garnet, who had hers cut off to make her look like a "normal" human
wat happened to red magesLani is a red mage, and there are red mages wandering the streets of Lindblum and Daguerro.
and time mages?FFV was the only old-school game that had time mages as a specific class, I think. Every other game gave those skills to white and black mages.

I like the idea of being inspired by tradition, but I don't see the point of shamelessly recycling something that was done decades ago, and spitting out a carbon-copy that's identical except for the graphics. Progress is all about change, about building upon what went before. If old ideas work well, then of course they should be utilised; but doing something solely because it's an old idea is sort of pointless.

I don't think that you can get any closer the the roots than FFIX.
I really think that Square Enix did a very good job by creating a game- that reflects certain perspectives of the old Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy IX is just great :)

I have to agree with that. FFIX was an excellent game. I loved how the storyline was always exciting. All the characters were enjoyable, even if you didn't get to see some all that much. It was an improvement over FFVIII, where the characters besides Squall and Rinoa seemed like wallpaper.

Anyways, I liked how the summoners had horns. Blue magic is cool. :)

And yeah, they did kinda force it a little much. The final boss and the crystal thing wasn't even discovered until like the last 5 minutes of the game.
