View Full Version : "Final Fantasy is ghey!!"

What do other people say or think about you playing Final Fantasy? There's general concensus among the non-FF playing public that it's long and repetitive with each passing game and only uber-obsessed fanatics ever buy the games and when they do, they buy like 12 copies and that is the reason behind Square's success.

My defence to accusations like this is usually, "Shut up, no soup for you!" or something equally random and that usually works but I can't really think of a reason as to why I play Final Fantasy and why I find it so enjoyable.

I'll say this about myself, I can't remember the last time I finished an FF game. I do NOT consider myself an RPG player and the ones I've played are the FF series, ToP and Chrono Trigger. On the whole, I prefer other genres like fighting and racing...

I have gone a little off topic so I'll just wind it up here. What do your non-FF playing friends think of you? What do they think of FF in general? What is your reaction to their thoughts or opinions?

Discuss.

Hrm...well, I haven't mentioned it to too many people, but generally, it goes like this: The guy's think it's either really lame that I play RPGs, and not solely fighting games, Doom, Quake, those things. Or they play them too, and think it's cool that I do.

The girls...most of them give me that "look". "You play video games?" Or all they care about are that the guys are hot.

It kind of bugs me, but that's why I came here anyways. *shrug*.

I'm a RPG player in general, and my friends who prefer shooters find it rather weird. Some of them tried the FF games, and they find them too difficult. (One couldn't find the Fire cavern in FFVIII :rolleyes2 ) I don't realy mind what they think about FF, because I think the most shooters are rather primitive (take no ofense) so it's the same.

I play games for a compelling storyline. That is my defense.

One could also make a point that all their games are really nothing but rehashed versions of older games that change a few things around, whereas Final Fantasy at least has major differences in the storyline each time around.

lol, so true. I'm ex DooMer, Unrealer, Wolfshtein and sml so I know what are you talking about. I had a bad quarrel on one old BBS about RPGs and shoot them all games. Some guy claimed that RPG gamers are elite of the gaming world. I was against that of course, but I actually haven't played many RPGs at that time. So I promised I'll play 10 RPGs to the end and then say what I think. I ended up being a pure RPG gamer... No comments needed...

I dont bring up the subject of Final Fantasy with my non loving FF friends, but when it accidently slips into the conversation, they listen, then they change the sunject. I dont care, its there loss :)

Most of my guy friends play the PS2, I usually talk about it with them, I dont really care what my girl friends who dont like the PS2 or play video games think about it.
My sister is a FF fanatic, so me and here constantly talk about it, and a couple of my close family members love it to, so I get by just fine :)

Final Fantasy isn't exactly a complex RPG, so anybody who thinks you're weird for playing it obviously doesn't know what they're talking about.

Very few of my friends play FF, but they don't find anything wrong with it. They just don't enjoy it as much as I do. I've never come across anyone who thought that the series was 'gay', but I probably wouldn't care what they thought, anyway.

My feelings are that people dislike FF, not so much for the games in and of themselves, but more because of the fans and community. I think people see FF fans as idiot fanboys who say "OMG FF12 COMEING OUT SOON!I GETTING MONEY FROM PARENTS HOPE CLOUD IS IN IT HE =TEH HAWTNESS! <3<3<3<3<3" on messageboards all day, while ecshewing all other good games and ignoring some of Square's big mistakes *cough*tomsawyer*cough*. FF is pretty mainstream, and I think there's a lot of RPG players who dislike that and would rather play more obscure titles like Ultima or even Wozz. I agree that we shouldn't all just buy the new FF game mindlessly just because it's the new one in the series, but I still like FF tons. I'm also a huge fan of Earthbound. I'm not sure, but it might be my favorite RPG of all time.

I talk about it with people that do play it, and don't talk about it with people that don't play it. It's basic conversation skill, as far as I can tell. Though sometimes people get worried when they see me play FFVII for the 100th time... :p Most people are surprised when they learn that I play these games. I don't usually get a "you nerd" response - because most people consider me to be pretty normal anyways.

DJZen

I don't get that response either. You can pretty much tell just by looking at me what I do with my free time :D

i had alot of nerd friends so even those who did not play it did not think it was bad. though i would like 2 be called a Nerd for playing it cause i consider that a compliement :) .

FF is pretty mainstream, though the progamme Gamesville on Skyone UK does implie everytime it comes up that it is only 4 nerds...

Me: "Hey do you guys play / like Final Fantasy games?"
Friends: "Is that Japanese porn or something? O.o"

But I did manage to get one friend to play through FF8 and FF9, he seems to like them. ^^

EDIT: BTW, FF games are no where near popular in Australia, or at least where I live. So sucks for me I guess. ;_;

my friends really don't care that i'm a final fantasy freak... some of them like the FF games, and some of them don't care. i don't really talk about it to them... or else if i do, then they'll be like, "hey, that guy in there is hot!" or something... (well, there are plenty of hot FF guys, but that's really not the reason i play the games).

i like FF because it gives me something to do, and i love the storylines and characters... it's interesting.

Oh yes and for the record most my friends play Final Fantasy. Talk about the company you keep, eh?

Here they don't even know what Final Fantasy is. For example my father saw me playing FF9 and asked about Quina: Who's that fat guy dancing around? I also never metioned it anywhere else cause they know I play games and that has not made me very populair. Games are for nerds, and were are the cool gang so we don't play games.

OK, I don't even react on that bullshit. FF is cool, but for some hard to understand, cause they don't know what it is. If they will launch Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children with a lot of reports etc and it will be a success, I think soon everbody will be playing FF, it al depens on what's hot or not!

I don't think there will be many non-FF players interested in the movie, as it is a sequel to one of the games.

Most of my friends who don't like RPG's don't care whether I like them or not. I like pretty much every genre, but we all get that there are some things certain people love and other hate.

And 2 of my friends are very interested in animation and they think the Advent Children trailer is awesome even though they don't know what's what.

I've liked RPGs since the first time I played FFVII. I don't know why, and I don't care why. All I know is that they give me something to do when there isn't anything else, and they give me something to do when I don't want to do anything else.

As for what my friends, family, aquaintences, or street strangers think of me, I couldn't care less (especially them strangers  ). I'll do things my way, and as long as it doesn't directly interfere with their lives, they'll do things their way.

a lot of my friends play Final Fantasy games and the ones that don't don't play video games at all.

Ouch!
08-29-2004, 08:48 PM
Most people in my school don't quite understand why I like Final Fantasy, and I can't really explain it to them either, as they have absolutely no clue what an RPG is and how you play one.

Those who do play Final Fantasy (not many, but there's a couple) obviously get along with me. However, most of them like the newer ones which upsets me. Also, the two girls I know who play a lot are constantly like, "Tidus is so hot!" and I just shake my head and mumble about him being a cry-baby wuss but they still swoon.

I don't think any of my friends play Final Fantasy. My good freind says he wouldn't have the paitence for it. But if I'm playing it when he comes over, he'll watch me for a bit and say how cool it looks.

A guy at school I used to talk to doesn't understand the materia system of FFVII, but he understands, and even likes, the junction system of FFVIII. He also claims FFVII to be retarded because it was made in Japan :tumble: He's not all that bright  .

Also, there are actually supposed to be two spaces after an ending punctuation, but most forums will automatically reduce it down to one space. <--See? I put twenty-one spaces there, but you can only see one (and quoting this will probably only show one as well).

It's the big stuff like

that matters. I mean, c'mon, I can't even understand what that says, but at least it's better than 'uber speach.' Like typing "neways" in stead of "any way." "Anyways" isn't even a real word, there isn't supposed to be an 's' at the end; it's just "anyway."

...Of course, none of this really belongs here, this isn't a "proper grammer" thread. What's the topic again? *scrolls up* Oh yeah. Well, I've already made my statement, but I can say that most of my "good" friends (the ones that would help you when you're in trouble) play Final Fantasy games, and like them just about as much as I do. So, I got no complaints there :D.
