I interpret it as Donnie's search for God. I've watched the movie many times and that's what seems to make the most sense.

Do you have any links? I've been pretty much going on what's in the movie, though I know there's more to be found on the website reading the Philosophy of Time Travel, though it'd be silly for the film maker to assume that everyone's read that in order to understand the film.
This is a review that says everything that I was thinking the movie was supposed to be about.

I really didn't like this movie. It's been explained to me, it just didn't really pique my interest or strike me as terribly profound. It didn't really have a point, and that irritated me.

I saw it once, really liked it. To me, there is no time travel and the whole movie is Donnie dreaming/hallucinating before the thing that happens happens.

Wow, eest. That's something I'd never really thought of before. But given the repetition of his sleep troubles, it seems to kind of fit a motif. *ponders*

I'm generally a big fan of cult films, but I thought Donnie Darko was more than a little overrated. Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty good movie, but I wouldn't spend money to see and/or own a copy.
Wtf...I've never seen or heard of it...what the hell is it about/ and when did it come out?

I think you missed the fact that France's rating is 'U' This is madness...
French parent: "Vieil enfant ici de cinq ans, observez ce film au sujet des personnes folles et des lapinseffrayants énormes qui vous disent de tuer des personnes !"
Little Kid: " Mon type de favori de film !"
heheeeeee I love the French :D

If you go about reading reviews and such, or if you have the dvd, Directors commentary and deleted scenes it all becomes QUITE clear (well, until they take a Major tangent... saying that the Grandma Death orchestrated the ENTIRE thing on purpose by walking to the mailbox constantly) The Thing i Picked up on was Donnie Subconsciously forming Frank from an occuring image, and using him as a tool to justify his own means of righting things (expose the kiddy porn, flood the oppressive school.)
If you think about it, the time Loop, once established by the falling jet engine, would be in effect throughout the entire movie, after that fact anyways. This, in my opinion would create a state of suspended half memorys by the combination of Paradox Donnie and end of paradox Donnies brains. *tries to simplify* the fact that donnies was present when the wormhole formed would send his state of mind back to himself sitting in bed that evening before the jet hit. But the Melding of that consciousness and his own would result in the memories of future donnie being HALF accepted, as only a part of the mind would accept them as fact. This part could however, in theory, effect subconscious thought, because, donnie was awake at the time of the wormhole, and thusly that part would be eternally awake in the paradox. this could cause the Image of Frank in Donnies fragile head, and memories could be misinterpreted by donnie as an order from frank to burn this or flood that.
And that my friends, is the reason i should stick to watching "dude, wheres my car"
