Lots of Lurkers

I was looking on the main page and noticed that there was 11 lurkers online. I had a look at the who's online menu and saw that about 8 of them were bots labled with chat and search names eg. google.

What are these things?? i never noticed them until about 3 days ago.

Not the gross, hairy, killers in the dark corners of your basement/attic ... but the cute happy colored ones that make cookies. ^___^!

I'm not totally sure either, I thought it was just a better word for 'guest' or 'lurker' as you say but I saw one called 'AskJeevesBot' too.. Thats not cool. -_-
