View Full Version : Typing with one hand

For no reason whatsoever I just recalled that one scene in Goldeneye where Boris was at the computer in the Control Center, clicking a pen with one hand and typing furiously on the computer with the other.

I'm sorry but that was just badass to the nth degree. And ever since then I've decided to make it my objective to learn how to type like that.

My question is this:

Is that even possible?

I don't know how practical it would be to be able to type like that with one hand, but it sure would be an awesome thing to learn how to do, albeit it extremely useless.

Is there any homekey position to use when typing with one hand? I gave it a shot and found myself resting my index on the F and the pinky on the J. I put out a fairly decent speed, but I was looking at the keyboard the entire time, and it still wasn't very fast at all.

Another problem I found with one hand typing is the Shift key. The shift on the right may be easy to get to with the pinky, but what about the one on the left? The thumb maybe?

Anyone ever tried or have any tips for one-handed typing? Is it even possible?

one hand typeing? actually im trying it right now and really i find it rather difficult and slow going. I dont think it is possible to do it extreamly fast unless you had a small keyboard.

I've done that when I'm lazy. I make lots of errors tho. :D

I don't think it's really possible to type that fast with one hand. Unless you try really really hard.

It is a useful thing to know how to do if you like to use the computer and look at porn.

Seriously though, when I'm feeling nerdy I'll eat a sandwhich and type on msn with on hand :D

I sort of try to do it when I'm at work and I have more time than work, but it gets boring quite fast.

It's kinda pointless since most of us type with both hands the majority of the time. Basically the opposite side from the hand you are using is most difficult to type with because you're used to 1) not using your hand to type there and 2) not used to moving your hand about, much less the opposite hand. Capital letters on the opposite side is also annoying because you have to stretch your hand out. Yay.

But it is possible. I can probably type at 30 wpm with one hand. Maybe 40.

I'm typing with one hand. It's difficult and troublesome and it's taking along time. So I shall use both my hands now.

There. That's better. n_n

i thhink it would be much easier if you ignored most captalization all together. and i can't do this well without looking.

That's frustrating. I blame James Bond and will now hate him for the rest of days.

if i were to type with just one hand i would, yes, be forced to ignore capitalisation. for the obvious, handcrobatic, reasons.

With my index finger on the left shift key, I can reach as far as "U", "J", and "N" with my pinky. I am typing this post with one hand - I could get used to typing this way...

To be honest, the pen-twirling thing was what made Boris cool. Once you can do that, learning to type with one hand seems rather trivial.

I can do it better than Boris! I am typing this one handed, or rather, one fingered and it's not really that slow at all. But slower than ususual! :(

Hand muscles aren't even designed to type when you use two at once. Using just one hand would be too much strain. You'd cripple yourself pretty quickly if you typed at anything near a normal speed.

Yea I am trying right now. Tips? You have to concentrate, the caps lock key will be your new best friend for capitals so you don't have to use the shift key. Your hand gets tired after awhile, so give it a break for awhile. Yep :) Okay need 2 hands now...

Sooo much better :)

one handed typing eh???? its slower than usual, and i can't puncutuate so its not very useful, methinks. but its not that slow. my hand is stupid and its only using one finger to type. gah.

Okay I'm typing this with one hand while twirling a pen :p. Alright, no pen now, and it's much easier. Now left hand, which may even be faster for me, as there's more useful letters over where it's used to typing, and I'm left-handed to boot.

Also, capitals Are Not A Problem For Me - I can reach IKLO all with the left shift key :p...typos are the issue.

I type one handed on occasion, and so I'm reasonably fast at it, but I make more mistakes and I'm slower at fixing them...it's useful on Msn when I'm doing something and need to fire off a response.

(all of this typec one handed!...mostly with my left hand)

You've gotta be pretty skilled to type quickly with one hand. You'd also have to know your home rows and all that jazz, too.

so this is what it's like to type with just one hand... a real waste of time and effort. i don't know, maybe it's harder on an ergonomic keyboard. wow, the hand does get tired fast when doing this.

I always used to type like that. I was pretty good.

I've practiced it a bit on FFXI. It's not that fast, but it doesn't do the "thingggggggggggggggggg" that happens to me all the time on that game when I type with two hands.

And that information about crippling yourself quickly when you type with one hand is pretty scary. When I do think about it, it IS a tremendous strain on the fingers.

Maybe I won't shoot for the furious pace any more, but a cruising 20 WPM or something like that. I'm also going to have to come to realize that I will not be able to type with one hand without looking at the keyboard.

And that Boris picture was PIMP by the way.

This is not so hard. I am sorta forgetting where the buttons are but I only need to look down fifty percent of the time. I am gonna perfect this art....when I have the time.
