Before Crisis - Final Fantasy VII
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform: Mobile Phone
Genre: RPG
Origin: Japan
Release: TBA
Latest news:
August 16, 2004 - In Japan, all the PlayStation-exclusive magazines are giving coverage to the two new Final Fantasy products scheduled for release this year. That means lots of pages devoted to spoiler-filled Final Fantasy: Advent Children images and text (which we're trying to avoid -- it's a movie, afterall) and lots of pages devoted to less-spoiler-filled Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII info.
Before Crisis, in case you haven't been keeping up on the Japanese mobile gaming scene, serves as a prequel to Final Fantasy VII, Square Enix's landmark RPG that took the PlayStation by storm back in 1997. The game focuses on the story behind the Turks, a group of body guards that works for the powerful Shinra power company which took a central role in the main FFVII storyline. Square Enix is developing the game for Foma 900i series next generation phones out of Japanese provider NTT DoCoMo, although we expect to see the title ported to other Japanese standards eventually (and maybe even an American standard one day).
New details on the game have come to light thanks to the latest issues of Japan's Famitsu PS2 and The PlayStation magazines. In Before Crisis, you can choose to play as a variety of different characters. So far, only a blonde female and a red-haired male have been revealed. The male character was once a gang leader who one day decided that it was in his best interests to sneak into the Shinra building in order to steal a pricey motorcycle (perhaps the same motorcycle that Cloud used to escape from the building years later in VII -- we're not sure). He was caught by Turks member Reno and, since that time, has served in the Turks with aims to reach the top ranks of the organization. The female character, meanwhile, graduated at the top of her class from the Shinra Military school, a school where her father serves as a teacher. Following graduation, she entered the Turks. She's a serious person -- perhaps too serious.
Regardless of which character you pick, the story progression of Before Crisis seems to remain the same. Taking place six years prior to the start of Final Fantasy VII, the game will apparently reveal some big thing that the Turks did at the time. The story will connect directly to Final Fantasy VII, so those who played that title (the millions of you throughout the world) will probably want to find out what happens.
Non-playable characters from the FFVII world also feature in the game. Rufus and Shion were previously revealed, but Before Crisis will also include Reno, Rude and President Shinra, all of whom were in Final Fantasy VII. While Reno, who likes to be cool and Rude, who likes to be quiet, served somewhat as comical villains in FFVII, they're elevated to the role of your mentors and guides in Before Crisis. One screenshot of the game shows the male main character revealing to Rude that he's finished a mission. As for President Shinra, we're not sure how he features in the game just yet, although one screenshot shows him asking the player to hurry up and help him out.
The actual gameplay in Before Crisis is mission based for up to four Online-connected players. You and your fellow players take missions and, as you fight battles, progress through the game.
The game has both action and RPG-style elements to it. As you move about the field of play, you need to stay clear of enemy sights, lest you get spotted; alternatively, there are times when you'll have to chase down enemies or run away from enemies who've spotted you.
When you touch an enemy, the game takes you to a battle screen. While in battle, you can make use of weapon-based attacks against opponents and also use magic. It's also possible to run away to escape a battle. Magic, incidentally, is earned in a way that apparently depends heavily on the game being cell-phone based. We're not sure of specifics just yet, but we presume it has something to do either with Online access, bar code reading, infrared transfer or making a phone call (Call a special number to get a new piece of magic? We'd do it!).
The game seems to feature Materia, a type of elemental orb that, in the original title, could be equipped to characters to give them powers. The upper-right part of the screen contains four slots linked together just like Materia slots from the original title. In a screen featuring a water magic attack, one slot has a blue Materia orb in it, while a screen featuring a fire attack has a Red orb equipped.
How all this will work out in practice with real players located across the country should be interesting. We'll be back with more as Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis approaches its late August Japanese Beta test. - IGN.com

Hey, at least Noob had some pertinent info, as opposed to a rambling OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! that we usually get with the release of new game info. but yeah, "official" is a bit touchy chris, i've been here off and on for four years and i'm not comfortable with throwing those up just yet.... but my props on NOT being a ranting raving fanboy/girl lunatic. OBJECTIVITY AND PERTANANCE RULE!!!!
And yeah, the game sounds cool, lol

Well since there is no ffVII BC forum, i think this is cool. it should get a sticky status :D ...but i know it wont.
Good work. This should be stickied.
Mods are not going to be happy with a noob posting an official thread. Thats like me going to the site staff page and making rules to posting there. This topic is dead to me DEAD I SAY!
He's been around for almost three months and most of his topics are very good. So if you think the topic is DEAD then don't bother posting in it.

The problem with that is one of the features of this game is the ability to call up other players for backup. It COULD be done on the N-Gage (giggle) but I doubt Squenix is suicidal enough to make a game on that platform. However, it is possible that the game will be released in the US and Europe. The phone (FoMA900i series) has been approved by the FCC in America. That's not to say the game IS coming to America, just that at this point there's no way to tell either way.

News Update
September 03, 2004 - Square Enix revealed today what we've known for the past week: Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII is very popular. According to the company, the mobile title, which is now undergoing a beta test program in Japan, was being accessed at levels approaching one hundred times the expected amount in its early days of testing. This amounts to a total of 1.6 million accesses on the first day, with a peak of 160,000 in an hour.
When accessing the Before Crisis site on the first day of the beta test, had to wait nearly twenty-four hours before we could successfully download the application and begin play. Since that time, playing the game has meant lengthy pauses for downloads and other accesses to the network. Still, we were able to play enough of the game to write a lengthy impressions piece, which you should definitely check out.
Square Enix promises to fix its system and add more servers in time for the 9/24 start of full service.
More info can be found here: www.ign.com

In addition to being able to call other players for backup, you can also take pictures with your phone's camera and get certain items depending on what you photographed; for example, taking a picture of a white sheet of paper may get you, say, a Cure spell.
It'd be great if you could only get certain items by photographing things that are one of a kind or hard to find in real life, like a wild animal or a national monument.
There's no way this game is going to be put onto a format like the GBA with these kinds of features intact. Apparently that particular model of phone that supports Before Crisis is being brought to the States, though, so we may still get it.
I would like to share some info on this game go to the other FFVII Before Crisis thread I accidently made because when I am going to make a thread I don't look at the other threads and I haven't been to the FFVII forums in well since I joined about 3-4 months ago. Got it?
* I'll post the info if you want me too later.

Here at Eyes on Final Fantasy people post topics about a certain subject and then others discuss that subject in the thread. If the topic of the thread is Before Crisis, which it is, then your post should only be about this topic, and not about FFVII in general or Final Fantasy ingeneral. We have many other topics about FFVII. That first line you click on is the subject, or, what you should be discussing in the thread. Please be aware of that before you post. Do NOT post again in this thread unless you wish to discuss the game 'Before Crisis'. If you have any more questions please pm me or another staff member.

I just wanted to put out there that there is a wonderful person attending school in Japan who has taken it upon herself to make an unofficial Before Crisis website (http://www.freewebs.com/gunshotromance/index.htm), which provides chapter translations and info/impressions on the characters for us Westerners who can't play the game.
I would encourage you to check it out. BC looks friggin' awesome. :D

so if these two chars are the main chars in the story than how come you don't hear about them in FF7?
Do you mean the characters in the logo? If so, then the answer is the same reason that Dash Rendar isn't mentioned in The Return of the Jedi, despite his presence in Shadows of the Empire, which fell between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi chronologically: The original work wasn't written with the newer one in mind. Final Fantasy VII was not written with Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, or Dirge of Cerberus in mind.
How they might handle that is anyone's guess right now. Perhaps all the Turks seen in Before Crisis with the exceptions of Tseng, Rude, and Reno will die before the story ends.
By the way, those two in the logo don't even have canon names, nor do the other Turks in the game aside from Veld, Tseng, Reno, and Rude.

Putting this on any system in the US would be good as long as it wasn't on a freakin cellular.
Masamuneˇ1600
04-09-2005, 02:13 AM
The problem with that suggestion is that switching away from phones would compromise some of the game's cellular-unique features; for example, the color/photography materia system. But, yes, a US release would be awesome.
As to BC news, I don't think anyone has yet mentioned that the game is being released in a series of chapters. Chapter 10, the most recent installation, was released on March 31.

I'm NOT gonna buy a cell phone just to play BC. I need one anyway but can't affored one. I don't care about cellular-unique functions. They included that PocketStation mini-game in FF8 and I didn't complain (very much) when the PocketStation didn't make it to U.S.

Before Crisis update!
According to Tetsuya Nomura, it seems that two more playable characters will be added to the game. Given that the two current playable characters don't have official names, it should be interesting to see what develops from this.

ok so im from ireland and completely clueless about this before crisis game - now i aint really interested in knowin any other details other than playable formats - this might be a really obvious and pointless question but is there any chance that this could get released on psp - iv been hearin about how this machine is so revolutionary in respect to others - as it stands i know for a fact that if it remains on mobiles phones there is no chance of it coming to europe (mobile gaming hasnt impacted the market at all) - anyone able to shed any light on this?
DJZen
05-04-2005, 09:46 PM
I'm sorry, but "PSP" and "revolutionary" just shouldn't be used in the same sentence unless that sentence also contains the word "not".
Losing the cell-phone features would cripple the gameplay, making it very not fun. Unless there's been some announcement that I missed, it's not coming to PSP. It IS, however, coming out in the US, so for that alone I'm happy.

Well, it seems that SE has announced plans to bring Before Crisis to the US. The release date, unfortunately, has not been decided.
Sweetness. I was wondering if it would make it's way here.
To the person who said they should stop making sequels, Before Crisis isn't a sequel, it's a prequel.

to that freak that called us nerds .. how dare you judge other people by one computer game interest. I could call you a hyperactive child with ADHD judging from your posts but I'm not judgemental like that.
back to topic - I hate playing games on my mobile (cell phone if you're american and dont understand what I'm saying) so I would love for it to be released on playstation because its far more convenient for millions of game players. And BC sounds better than that sequel with vincent (although he is very cute).

"Veld" is the old leader of the Turks. Anyway, other new characters are Sears/Shears, the head of AVALANCHE's Military Division, Fuhito, the head of AVALANCHE's Intelligence Division, and Elfe, the overall leader of AVALANCHE.

E3 2005: FF7: Before Crisis America-Bound
Hear that? That's a collective sigh of relief from mobile gaming Square fans in the fine 50.
May 18, 2005 - If there is one thing we can count on here at IGN Wireless, it's the weekly email over when Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis, currently a Japan-only cellphone game, is coming to America. Well, let those email subside, because Square Enix has indeed confirmed that Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis is headed to these shores next year. Yeah, 2006 is a long way off, but by then phones and networks will be ready to carry the rather advanced little game.
Oh yeah, I'd thought I'd post some screenshots:

TGS 2005: Square Enix Video Wall Presentation
Japan's most secretive development giant keeps its cards close once again.
September 16, 2005 - Every time we head off for TGS or E3, we carry with us thousands of emails and message board posts begging us to give readers all we can from Japan's most revered developer, Square Enix. And every time, we try to warn them all: don't expect miracles.
Square Enix is a prolific development company, and is constantly dropping surprise shocks for gamers to be excited for. When it comes to trade shows, however, the joint company is often very secretive and careful with the details it doles out. Most of its game announcements come at special Square Enix press conference held at a later time and different place, and the playable demos on hand are often familiar to those in the press in one form or another.
TGS 2005 wasn't an exception, unfortunately. The company has a number of great titles playable on the show floor, but there were only a handful of games to play in total, and its video presentation consisted mostly of trailers we've seen before and sneaks of games that didn't illuminate much more detail that what was known prior to the event.
Square has strictly forbidden filming of any portion of this video presentation (we're probably not even allowed to suggest you try searching Korean message boards for unauthorized clips from the video reel taken by hidden cameras...) Here's a run-down of what was shown in the Square Enix video presentation:
Code Age
Slime MoriMori 2
Final Fantasy XII
Dragon Quest II
Musashiden II
FFXI
EverQuest II
Fantasy Earth
Front Mission Online
Front Mission 2089
Front Mission 5
The World of Mana
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Kingdom Hearts II
Code Age (PS2, Cellphone) -- The beginning of the video presentation was all about this new Square Enix concept project. (The video, while we're going on about it, was very, very, very LOUD! Did anybody in America happen to be able to hear it, because it seemed that damned loud.) Across mobile phones and a PS2 RPG, this new concept unfolds with some gorgeous scenery and some bizarre character designs. It's a whole game where overly-serious warrior men and women are dressed up in Tron cosplay. Much of the video was of the CG animation, showing large battles in the epic war that this tale is set in. Actual gameplay of the PS2 game, called Code Age Commanders, looked similar to the graphic quality and texture style of Kingdom Hearts, with RPG battles that had the characters flying through the air and lunging at each other when they weren't standing around discussing things severely. There was also a small smattering of wireless footage Code Age Brawls, and there were two different cuts of the trailer footage. What was there looked nice in an otaku freak-out kind of way, but nothing really grabbed us in the presentation besides the unique character designs. From the looks of the stumped Japanese showgoers, it wasn't just because we were foreign to the game that we didn't get it. The project launches in Japan on October 13.

I must say that game is looks gorgeous. I wouldn't mind playing it as well. xD However that means moving form where I am now to the US or learn japanese and move to Japan. :( I hope it's released state side though. That way I know I'll play it one day.

I just hope it comes for the US. I live in canada and whateva comes to the us comes to canada the same time or a month later so im not too concerned, but you people in the UK can forget the game you people get stuff like one year later!
Plus i dont think the game will come out in the US for now, but just wondering if it does, does it have to be for those specific phones? I have a RAZR V3 an its really high tech an that stuff cause its powerful will there be a way to play it on that?

More likely we wont get it at all, I really hate being in the EU, there is practically no differences with the game as of the USA version, its that all tghe other languages that it must translate into makes UK never get anything ........

Not only did you not make a new thread, but the post you made is pretty far off-topic. This thread is about Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, the mobile phone game.

i know this thread is a bit dead and most people won't even notice this but according to Nex Gen:
GAF is reporting that according to Next-Gen reporter Tim Rogers, recaping last weekend's Square Enix Party 2007, Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis will be heading to PSP.
Until now, the game has only been available on mobile phones in Japan, though there have long been rumors of a U.S. mobile release as well. No release date for the U.S. version of the game, either on mobile or PSP, is known.
My only concern is... in BC you have to use a camera i believe right?
but the PSP camera is extremely unpopular in NA, because of it's low resolution... will the camera come for free with the game or will they scratch that feature all together?
