View Full Version : Will you be mad if it's not a true RPG?

Word on the street is that it might be an action RPG... not sure exactly if that's Square's bag.

I was really looking forward to another trip to RPG goodness, so I'll be quite a bit disappointed.

Good, I'm glad it's an action RPG. I got bored with the turn based crap.

"Ok I hit you, now it's your turn to strike at me with everything you have while I don't move."

I hope it playslike Devil May Cry, sounds fun.

well kinda hard to do a RPG with just vincent I think. so i guess i wont be suprised if it's not, but i'll be a little upset, but that's about it

yes.I will be.Very.I like that style. But it'd be kinda neat to see another style in the FF titles.

Final Fantasy 7 was THE RPG for me, it brought me into RPGs all together. I thought everyone who played RPGs before FF7 was a DnD type person, I just didn't understand why they would be fun. It was ground-breaking and that is how I know FF7. Honestly, I'm scared of a Final Fantasy 7 that isn't an RPG. I don't think it could be pulled off, and I don't see why it would be attempted.

I read somewhere it's gonna be a FPS.

I guess it would be all right although i am dissapointed. But it worked for KH and DMC. I wonder if the materia system will still be there?

SE did try a different type of game in their FFs: Crystal Chronicles. And it was horrible.

Basically if this isn't an RPG I will be pissed. I like the Zelda games, I like Devil May Cry, but I do NOT want them mixed together to make a gothic action RPG.

I can see why it would be odd having Vinnie as the main character in an RPG, but it would just make it all the more awesome.

KH was an action RPG and it worked out fine. I would be satisfied if it even came close to that.

09-20-2004, 01:43 AM
If it's KH-style, that won't be so bd. But if it's DMC-like, I'll be pretty upset. Don't get me wrong, I love DMC, but that's THAT game. This is final fantasy. And most of the time, if it's an action game, there's minimal storyline. The stories are what I buy FF for; I'd be more than disappointed.

Meh, it's a little too early to be complaining though. Until I know for sure, I'll just keep my mouth shut.

umm, Dont expect a great story line no matter the gameplay...I mean its mainly about vincent, the most youre gonna get is his past and what he is doing now, not a whole epic adventure like FF7...Also, They declared it a spin-off,not supposed to have the greatest story line so I think an action RPG will be fine. ESPECIALLY if its like Devil may cry, my 2nd favorite game.

Well, by loking at the images I never thought it would be turn-based. But I guess it can turn out pretty good.

Impossible to know until it's released.

They can make any type of game they want, the more the better as long as the quality is good. FFVII is my favourate FF, and it created some of the best characters and environments in the series. If they can be used in new and fun ways then great. Was anyone offended when Link turned up in Smash Bros?

I'd like a new FFVII RPG, but then I'd also like a remake. I'd like an action adventure, and Vincent would be a good choice (Though a dark version of Cloud might have been better though may not fit the plot after AC), but then I'd also like a massive fighting game pitting the characters together.

Between the Gold Saucer, the world and characters, and later ideas like the card games, Square could have thrown out dozens of spin offs. They know gamers care about this game, but if you don't like the ideas they run with, don't buy them.

I'd like it to be a mostly RPG-action game actually because I always found it annoying whenever you get pulled into a random encounter. It always takes my characters' ATBs forever to get filled. If the fighting is anything like Resident Evil's (with no ATBS but with the commands on the screen while you fight) I'll be most happy

if it uses anything like the ffX-2 chaos or KH combat i will be VERY ANNOYED. ffX-2 was a bad sequel because it was not like ffX. so any ffVII sequel that lacks the ffVII spirit will annoy me.

however thats just because i,m a tradionalist and am very scared of all these pseudo real time rpgs like ffX-2, and KH starting a horrible down ward trend of quality in order to sell more copies. imho FF should stay turn based, or even better just keep ffIV-IX ATB.

tht said though, if the story is good then as long as the combat is not Vagrant Story bad, i will like it.

Talking about FF Dying, and the New Ideas to keep it alive. This game could be definitly good, but itīs easier to make a piece of crap like a sequel just to sell, than a true FF Sequel to satisfy VII nostalgic players. I would love to see something like Metal Gear Solid mixed with zelda and a lot of FF elements together, that would made the perfect game, I didnīt even expected a Sequel !, I thin that an adventure sequel is not what we are waiting for, we want to bring that feeling again, not screw it shooting soldiers.

The concept of the RPG is becoming rather dated. Rather, the world seems filled with adventure-RPGs, action-RPGs, shooter-RPGs..hell I'm pretty sure I even heard the term Puzzle-RPG used to describe a game I don't quite remember.

What used to encompass the elements of the traditional RPG have now diminished. You no longer need a ATB bar, that much of a storyline or *gasp* a mute main character.

That having been said, I'm confortable with the adjustment and in fact, I adore the action-RPG. xD

When I first saw it, and heard it starred Vincent, I thought "Devil May Cry." And it seems like it might be such a game! :D Personally I loved Kingdom Hearts, and I just finished Tales of Symphonia. The game isn't great storywise, but has an incredibly fun and deep battle system. It's worth playing just for the battles...almost.

I'm an old school player. But FFVII is my favorite FF. But in SE Screws this one up like they did with FFx-2 They are going to get some complains from me. SE should keek it simple. MAKE A FFVII-2. I mean sure there's AC and BC. But for some reason DC(man what's with all the C's?) doesn't fall under the same category. Vincent is cool and all but Cloud is the coolest hands down. Long story short, SE better not mess this up!

Starcrest
09-22-2004, 02:49 AM
but if cloud's the main character then it'd practicly be like ac only game form, and who else to have shooter type game then with one of the people who actually have a gun?

When everyone said DoC will probably play alot like DevilMayCry I was scared, you see i had never played DMC so i was skeptical. I had heard of DMC, I have seen its great reviews but i have just never gotten around to playing it. so today i went out to EB games and bought a used copy for $10 and let me say that i would love to see vincent in this kind of game. The controls are so perfect and the gameplay is well thought out i hope that DoC is alot like it in terms of controls. but as for story i am expecting a VERY and i mean VERY well thought out FF worthy story to go along with all of this action. now if you'll excuse me im gonna go play some DMC right now :D .

I hope it's action-based. If it was going to be just a regular ol' rpg, they might as well just friggin remake ff7 like everyone wants them to. I think all the changes that SE's been making lately shows a lot of promise. It shows me they're still vital.

Hm... A real sequel to FF7? I'll be damned! I thought the ending rounded things up well enough. *Shrug* Oh well, it ain't my game to make. I do get a bad feeling about making Vincent the lead - he doesn't seem like that type. With that said, I don't believe making a good game with that idea is impossible, I just haven't noticed all that much in Square's storytelling that shows they're definitely, surely capable of it. I'll be keeping my eyes open.

As for action-RPG... I really don't feel that's very Final Fantasy-like. Time will tell... *Worried* As for real RPG or not, I don't consider ANY FF to be a real RPG, so I guess that particular question doesn't matter much to me. :)

Whee! The only known-to-me documented resident non-fan of FF on an FF-forum (me) is back on the ball! :radred:

yah, il probably enjoy DoC immensely(?), but not to the same extent if it were an RPG. but then again, SE could always do something completely differen't than we're expecting, so don't lose hope.

I would like to know who voices Vincent in this game...hope they stay true to his personality...I thought Cloud sounded quite good in KH...and the only voice that wasn't good in KH was Kairi's annoying laugh. That, and the fact that Sephiroth was done by Justin Timberlake *shudders*

wanna bet it's gonna be the guy Chuck Huber(hiei yyh) or David Kai(sesshomaru IY) one of those two who plays vincent's voice? (yes both of them can have low emotionless voices in case ya haven't heard them).

I don't know why you're all complaining, Kingdom Hearts was a great game! It was better than the other FF series because it was so different. It does get pretty boring if every game ends up being like the last one!
The only problem with Kingdom Hearts was that you needed more playable characters, controlling one guy all the time gets kinda slow, but it's not like FF: Dirge of Cerberus will improve that very much...

Still, Vincent was a kick-arse character in FF7 and I'd be more than happy to kick some more arse again!

If you're wanting an RPG, why don't you wait for FFXII. It's the first game they've released since FFX that's a proper RPG and it looks pretty good to me. I can't wait for it, because I've missed a good RPG game from Square-Enix. But DoC looks awesome. I also can't wait for that, because I love the idea of having a FF Action RPG. Plus Vincent was my favourite FFVII character.

extreme 112, the problem with your statement, is that Kingdom Hearts, IS NOT, a final fantasy, so hence forth, it'd be different. two different games, though similar, do not make it the same. yes it has FF characters in it, but, so? For instance, in Ocarnia of Time, Zelda 64, there is a pic. of Mario and gang, but is that a mario game? no, get it?

One winged angel of death
12-15-2004, 09:59 PM
i agree with Shiva's effect. Well all that is true. But kingdom hearts and final fantasy are different games. but are created by the same people. Well anyway, This game could possibly be an rpg but then there is the slight chance it isn't. But, if vincent is, IS the main character you play as mostly, then it is an rpg.

It won't technically bother me if DoC is not a traditional RPG. However, if it does turn out to be some sort of adventure or shooter game, I will not be playing it. Over the years, I've played most of the Square non-RPG games and hated each and every one of them. So, I'll stick to the games that I know they are good at. RPGs and RPGs alone. Truth.

Well most japaneese based RPGs is oriented on that turn base system.RPGs such as Morrowind(which actually set a standard on single player RPGs that SE probaly can't live up to).Well basicly I viewed all the FFs as playable anime to tell you the truth.I love it becaus ei can spectate alot and get through a lot of stuff just to see what else happens.WHen I picked up a game like morrowind nad not to go off topic. But morrowind was pure goodness.Anyway if they do make this one a action -RPG.Well They sure as well beetter do a better job than Leonheart did with fable.

I have heard around that FF7 Dirge of cerberus might be a first person shooter, thats super gay, i would throw burning bags of dog phecies at their windows and cars... i hate first person shooters, and i've been waiting for this game for a long time since i thought it was going to come out in the summer of 2004... i think the game should go along with the ff7 movie advent children, i wouldnt mind it so much if vincent was the main character as long as cloud and sephiroth are still in the game, also there should be something cool to do with your files from ff7 like side quests with your old characters that would be a lot of fun...

this doesnt have anything to do with the subject but i want them to release ffIII on GBA and everyone is telling me their going to release it on nintendo DS, but that is actually ffVI, and i dont give 2 http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifs about that game, i want ffIII, i dont want to play a translated version on an emulator because the gameplay is so slow because of how old the game is... i like the idea of remaking and rereleasing final fantasy games, they should have a big section of their efforts into that, they should release some of the games for gamecube, like a disc with ff7,8, and 9, that would be awesome...or at least ff7 and 8 cuz i didnt like 9

Starcrest
01-29-2005, 04:34 AM
firstly, if you don't like first person shooter games, fine. if this games a first person shooter but you like FF7, you should atleast check it out. if they were to put cloud and sepheroth into the game, it'd take the main focus off of the main character, Vincent, and his quest, and it'd make it another game based around cloud, and not Vincent, which the creators wanted. as for the disc with FF7 8 AND 9, that just won't happen. I think Nintendo had to buy the rights for CC, and i think to do that, it cost alot of $$$, which Nintendo, I think, is laking a little right now. they wouldn't have enough to buy rights for a big game like Final Fantasy VII, and three games on one disc wouldn't b possible, considering that the shortest disc game was...THREE disc's long, and 8 and 9 were four, fitting eleven discs on one, SMALL gamecube one wouldn't make sense

First of all... Who cares what kind of game it is? If you don't like it because it's not a true RPG, or if you don't like it because it's not an Action RPG, or a FPS, then why don't you just not play it when it comes out? It's the easiest way...
I myself don't really care what kind of game it is, as long as the story line is good, then there's nothing to worry about.
It's most likely going to be an Action-RPG... So far the only characters we've seen Are Vincent, and Cait Sith. I don't think a true RPG would work with two characters... But it did work with three, on FFX-2...

Dirge ain't no RPG. It's like GunGrave. It'll blow. But maybe the cut-scenes will be worth it.
I'll play it just because Vincent is my favorite character along with Tifa.

Why is everyone already saying it'll suck? YOU CAN'T, even if you hate action-RPGs/FPS or what not, it's not even offical that's what it'll be, so just shut up 'cause I'm tried of reading all those posts, and from now on if people start going it that dirction, I'm skipping their posts, it's just annoying. Now after you've played it and hated it, THEN you can complain all you want, you have reason for it, but for now just wait and watch, rent/burrow the game if you don't wanna waste alot of money, and then say it sucks if you think so, we don't need all these posts already.

Anyway, what's wrong with Sqaure trying something new? It keeps things intersteing. And even if sqaure other non-RPGs kinda sucked, you can't say this one will, it'll have differnet people on the production team then the other non-RPG games, and these people might pull it off.

Or not... that's a possibly to... but I'm buying it even if it sucks... I love Vincent that much...

And I admit, I'm not a big fan of Shooters and some action-RPGs, but if this does well, it might just get me into them, might play DMC someday, eh... if it turns out that people who are saying it'll probably suck now turn out to love it, I seriously will laugh my arse off.
