September 15, 2004 - As we reported in July Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children won't be alone in Square Enix's attempt at taking gamers back to the world of the biggest Final Fantasy of them all, Final Fantasy VII. The latest issue of Japan's Jump Magazine contains first information on an action game starring FFVII vampire character Vincent Valentine. The game, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus.

In Dirge of Cerberus, players take control of Vincent, a former member of the Turks. The game takes place a year following Advent Children, which means it follows the events of the PlayStation Final Fantasy VII. The story begins as a mysterious group called "DG" suddenly begins attack of a peaceful town, leaving only one choice for Vincent -- to fight back!

Aside from these few bits, Square Enix has revealed nothing on Dirge of Cerberus. The few screens shown of the game all appear to be from cinema sequences, with one screen showing a line of dialogue where Vincent states "The meeting place with Reeve is..." Looking strictly at the game's artwork, one may think Square Enix has taken some influence from Capcom's Devil May Cry; Dirge of Cerberus should appropriately be a vampire game, making this a reasonable choice.

A Japanese release for Dirge of Cerberus is set for 2005. It's possible that this game will make it into Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show press conference, scheduled for 9/24. We'll be back with more at that time.

The Genre is Action and it's "Import Only"?

Uhm, if these both mean what I think, I'm disgruntled.

Uhm, if these both mean what I think, I'm disgruntled.Early days yet; I'm sure it won't be "import only" if there's enough demand outside Japan. Which there's sure to be.
Genre is hard to specify sometimes. I'm guessing DoC could be anything from a third-person action title to an action RPG. Perhaps a mixture of genres...

the following is a translation of a squeenix .pdf containing info on the compilation of ffvii. i just put down what they have for DoC. this has a bit of story info, including who the enemies are.

COMPILATION OF FINAL FANTASY VII - PART THREE
DIRGE OF CERBERUS -FINAL FANTAY VII-

The third part of the "Compilation of FFVII" is finally revealed! Carrying on from the mobile phone application "Before Crisis" and the visual work "Advent Children", the next is "Dirge of Cerberus", a new title appearing on the PlayStation 2, depicting the world 3 years after "Final Fantasy VII."

(Story Outline)

After their sudden appearence, a mysterious group begin to attack towns. They are known as "Deep Ground SOLDIERS" (DG SOLDIERS), trapped underground by the Meteor disaster.
It appears the main character 'Vincent Valentine' has some kind of connection to this series of events, but what exactly is unknown. When the world is engulfed in darkness, his pistol shall play the 'dirge'.

Except to see appearences from other "Final Fantasy VII" characters as well!

News Update

September 24, 2004 - During Square Enix's conference at the Tokyo Game Show, a video was shown that included new footage from the recently announced Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Along with a collection of CG renders there was a brief glimpse, all of maybe ten seconds, which showed the game in action. The good news is that it looked solid and had a unique look to it. The other news, not necessarily bad, is that the game is looking to be a third-person shooter. Imagine that.

In the clip Vincent was running around with the camera behind him, shooting at various enemies. In another clip he had zoomed into a first-person mode for what looked like some sniper action. It was not clear whether or not Vincent is capable of moving while zoomed in for sniping. It was also not clear just what weapons aside from his trademark triple-barrel hand cannon he would be sporting. Like we said, the trailer was extremely brief and did not give away much in the way of gameplay.

What is clear from the footage and the accompanying screenshots is that the title is already looking sharp with its graphics. The game is set three years after the end of Final Fantasy VII the surroundings should be familiar to fans of that PSone classic. Other than that, the rest of the details of the game are yet to be revealed. - IGN.com
