View Full Version : So has the server been more stable?

Cid

I haven't heard too many complaints. I haven't been around as much either. How is the server holding up. I've noticed the occational 1 min hiccup, but it seems to be ironing itself out quickly. Anyone notice any downtime within the last 48 hours?

Its ussually normal but sometimes the page loads so slow that you dont even think its loading. the front site is fine its just the forum.

There are some slowdowns sometimes. But most of the time it's just fine.

We are also busier than we used to be... 75 members online... O_o

Yeah, more people are registering, but it could also be because of this: http://forums.eyesonff.com/showthread.php?t=51147

It hasn't been as bad as it was. Or maybe I'm just getting used to having a second window open while I wait for it to load. But yeah, I think it's better, at the least.

I think the reason there are more people online is because we doubled the logout time. maybe.

It has been much more consistently fast the last couple days.

It's been fine.

It still happens, but nowhere near as often. Nice work. :thumb:

I never noticed any instability on the old server, let alone the new.

It loads a tad bit slow at times.

It still lags when I make a post. It's very noticeable. So far as browsing or reading posts I haven't seen anything. The database might not be able to handle the traffic, would be my blind / random guess.

I was just about to post the same thing, actually.

It's hasn't lagged for me today, but the day before yesterday it was very bad. Same with the browsing.

EDIT: I have just experienced extreme lag, both in posting and browsing.

Yeah, cause I was repairing/optimizing the tables to see if it would help things out. We'll see.

I get the lag too. Sometimes it takes over a minute.

Maybe you need to trim some of the users who have joined and never posted out the database to de-bloat it a bit?

Loony BoB
10-06-2004, 11:32 PM
Eh, if it was nothing but db size, clearing the search index would cover a lot of it. Users don't take up tooooo much. Attachments are the killer.

then wipe attachments over 4/6 months old

Loony BoB

Nah, the older ones are generally the ones worth keeping. :p I don't think we'll be wiping the attachments anytime soon. That'd be a pretty rash (?) thing to do.

I'm having some lag right now. It comes and goes, and I have not noticed a change in this in the last couple days.

<mini-rant>Why did vBulletin have to screw up such a good piece of forum software by storing attachments in a mysql table. Who was smoking what when they made that decision?</mini-rant>

It's actually optional to store them in the db and I personally would have them put into a folder on the site instead, I suppose now is as good a time as any to do this. We'll see what Cid thinks.

I'm all for that, if the transfer is simple.

Once attachments are out of the database, I suppose people will be able to view them without logging in?

Loony BoB
10-07-2004, 05:19 PM
Not sure, I'll test that at Aiyon when I'm home.

EDIT: Actually, that was never an admin CP feature, now that I think about it - I think Cid's just disallowed remote linking completely at EoFF. If that's the case, it shouldn't be any trouble. However, we'll need to pull a downtime to get it done, and keep in mind that while it will probably cut the database by (at a guess) around half, if not more, there is the possibility that it won't affect the overall speed of the forums. I'm not really sure how attachments in the database works, only that I never liked the idea of it (the only time I'd use it is if I wanted to back up every single part of the forums on a single database file for some kind of reason, but even then you can just download the images via FTP and then zip 'em). I'm not sure how long it will take as EoFF is bloody big, however it is definitely a simple process.

Yeah, having the attachments in the database does make it easier to pack everything up in one nice location. It is a bigger drain on the server though as you get large files sitting in memory while a user downloads them. (as opposed to normal files on the webserver that can be cached in blocks at apache's leisure)

I'll get this done sometime tomorrow during the British working hours (in other words, the EoFF dead zone).

I would take a blind guess and say that moving attachments out of the database will definitely make things go faster, yeah. Filesystem access is definitely going to be faster than a database query, but how many orders of magnitude faster, I couldn't say.

Cid
10-07-2004, 08:35 PM
Yeah, the attachments take up 347.60MB of our 553.94MB total database.

If that's the case, it shouldn't be any trouble. It's under usergroup permissions - guests are denied downloading attachments, last time I saw. But yeah, if Cid's done that remote linking block thing, I guess most of the problem is gone except for people using EoFF to host their EoFF sigs :p

Loony BoB

I'm still waiting for Cid to send me some server information so I can go ahead with the attachment storage change. I need the root directory path and it looks like the various common ones didn't work, so we'll have to wait until Cid replies to my PM. If it's still slow after that, I'm not too sure on exactly where we should look to next, but I'm sure we'll figure it out.

I keep getting the following message in the mornings

This is Loony BoB your overlord, sup biatchies, now why you visiting here hommies. I'm currently doing some attachment moving, uh huh baby back in a min, so clear off and try again in a few mins, shouldn't take too long ;)

I'm suspicious of him becoming a gangster during file movements...

Initially it would seem good to move the avatars out of the database as well to improve speed (since DB avatars add 30 extra database connections per topic page) , but that would probably be a bad because a lot of people would start remote linking.
