FFX-2 is a direct sequel to FFX. Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus are, respectively, the prequel and the sequel to FFVII. Besides that, though, the games are all connected only by vague references, in-jokes, and carried themes. There are no direct connections.

In FFIX you actually get to solve a puzzle related to FFII.
About Joseph and his death ya' know.

Its actually a quite sad story...Joseph sacrificed his life to save Firion, Maria and Guy.

FFIX is a bit of a unique case. It contains references to EVERY mainstream FF game before it. Everything from Garland to Mt. Gulug to Pandemonium to that sword in Lindblum.

Square's just having some fun with FFIX. It's just like a little tribute to all the previous ones.

None of the FF's, besides FFX-2 and FFX and FFVII and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, Advent Children, and Before Crisis, are really linked. There are some stuff from previous games incorporated into later games, like Biggs and Wedge, Cid, and the summons, but they're not directly linked to eachother.

There are even some references to games that aren't Final Fantasy. For example, in Alexandria in FFIX you will come across a man named Ashley who runs the mini-theatre, who looks suspiciously similar to Ashley Riot from Vagrant Story (which just happens to be a Square game). Other similarities are in name only: the Mist and Ozma of FFIX appear in Legend Of Legaia, Mythril appears in Lord Of The Rings, and other such vague connections.

Mythril appears in Lord Of The Rings
Mythril appears in just about every RPG or medieval/fantasy game.

Mithril was Tolkien's creation. I guess FF's translators just call it "mythril" in the pursuit of being unique, or something similarly stupid. Maybe they want the pun to be that much more obvious.

7 to 10-2 are related because of the maps are similar- they look like Great Britain

IX only has all those references because it was the last ps1 ff game. It was to add to the nostalgia factor.
