Guy Fawkes... Is he the one who blew up the parlament or something?

Almost, but not quite. He was captured, tortured and killed for attempting to blow up Parliament. In order to commemorate the death of this "evil" man, we burn thousands of Guy Fawkes replicas on November 5th - every year.

Any excuse for a celebration.

Gee, it must be a great honor to have thousands of people make something that looks just like you every year so they can LIGHT IT ON FIRE AND BURN IT. Happy Holidays.

Guy Fawkes Night is basically celebrating an historic victory in the War on Terrorism, albeit one that happened centuries ago. I don't know if it'd catch on in this day and age, though - burning effigies of captured/killed terrorists, I mean. It seems kind of distasteful, somehow. Yet, because Guy Fawkes is an old tradition, it's tolerated. Even when many people - kids, especially - know little about what the day's celebrating.

Correction Raine, he wasn't killed. They took him up to the gallows to be hung, but he jumped off himself and broke his neck :)

Fireworks = :love:

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if November 5th out-explosions July 4th.

If he had succeeded, would you people burn down Parliament every year? That would be cool.

But then, I don't exactly have too much info on that particular incident.

They probably hung his corpse :D

why should I pay for firecrackers when 1) All the awesome ones are now illegal, and 2) both of my neighbours celebrated Guy Fawkes for me, and 3) We don't really have effigies here anyway?

Dammit, now I want to watch Home Alone.

he was going to be, but when he saw his comrades being hung drawn and quatered he thought bugger that! and broke his own neck. Ironic really since his was driven by his catholic beliefs and his last act sent him to hell.

No, it was to stop opression against catholics I think. I was never taught that he was "evil" though.

I'll say what I said in Psy's LJ:

They have this HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE display near me and I watched and lots of things went 'BOOM!' to loud music.

Happy Guy Fawkes all

If it had worked we'd all have been under conservitive rule for the last 50+ years...

I'm not sure if thats a good or a bad thing, I suppose we'd still have Margret Thatcher in power :P

Considering that it happened in the early 1600's in order to kill a King who hated Catholics, I don't think so Baloki :p

(PS: It would be an extremely good thing, but Maggie wouldn't be in power now anyway, as she's too old.)

I think that's how it is with most holidays. In Slovakia, there is a holiday on 17 November- it's a memory of a revolucion that got us separated from the komunistic reign, and almost noone does know what it is about althoug it didn't happen so long ago. It's sad how ignorant most people are to such things.

There's still loads of firework displays tonight... I used to like fireworks but now I have no real desire to watch them. It's such a big waste of money for a few lights in the sky....

Fireworks go BOOM.

I'm sure Guy Fawkes was hung drawn and quatered. Oh well. He wasn't the leader of the catholic people who wanted to blow up the building where the MPs sit. Oh no, it was some other dude, whose name I have forgotton. But Guy Fawkes sounded a lot better, so they made him out to be the leader.

I like watching fireworks. They are pretty.
