Duel-speed uselessness

On almost every record player I've ever seen they have two speeds, 33 and 45 being pretty common. My question is, what's the point? I have about 25 records and they all play on speed 33. If I put it on 45 the all soundlike a chipmunks album. While it is pretty funny hearing a chipmunk Pink Floyd The Wall and a chipmunk Jimmy Hendrix, is that the only reason it's there? Humor?

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet it's one of two things:

1. When you clean your vinyls you get a soft brush and hold it over the record as it spins. This high speed can get it done faster.

or

2. Much older records from back when they were just coming out might have been required to play at that speed.

There are actually two common kinds of vinyl discs. The large ones (LPs, 12") usually play at 33 1/3 rpm, the small ones (Single, 7") play at 45. Some vinyl discs players even have a speed setting of 78 for these rare discs that could be read at that speed.

I have the small singles too but they play at the same speed. hmmm!
