Is it told where they come from? In the world of ruin, where did they come from? Were they sealed away?

Yes, they were sealed. A old man in some town will tell you this. (Don't rember which)

Yeah, one of the scholars in Albrook tells you about that.

Yeah, they're from the war of the magi, along with the dragons and Atma (Weapon)
Again, I'd like to point out that people who go to the same forums I do are virtually incapable of correctly writing Doom Gaze :)

There like freakish weird monsters created by the destrucive forces known as "magic" that were re-leased at the worlds ruin.

Yup. Once again demonstrating just how badly Kefka damaged the world. I still say he got closest to destroying the world/"winning" of any of the FF villans.

He's one of the few villains who actually caused significant damage to the world. While, say, Sephiroth had the potential to end most of the life on the planet with one fell swoop, he really didn't accomplish much.
This is why I like Xenogears. As I recall, somewhere around 90% of the world's population died between Id's destruction of Etrenank and the massive attacks by the Seraphs. (Seraphim?)

Well, you've got a good idea with your connection between Xenogears and FF3. A seraphim is one of the many choirs of angels, which is why seraphims are usually associated with healing, God, or heaven in some way.
Here is a nice FF7 spoiler for you, to explain Sephiroth's underaccomplishment.
Sephiroth didn't cause significant damage because his goal wasn't to cause significant damage. First of all, it wasn't Sephiroth doing anything; Sephiroth was dead the whole time. Cloud killed him, and he never came back to life. At one point, you see his corpse, frozen in Mako. That's really him. The Sephiroth you encounter throughout your travels is really Jenova, taking on the form of Sephiroth, who is trying to get everything that has Jenova in it to come to the promised land, which is called the Jenova reunion...
There I go again, getting off topic. If you want more info on FF7 such as what I've listed, PM me and I'll be glad to tell you what I've learned after my many trips through FF7.

I was just saying that the PROPER pluralization of Seraph is Seraphim, but I wasn't sure if Xenogears used the term. And I don't really hold with the Jenova theory - I'd say they're a symbiotic being, and trying to differentiate between the two is rather pointless. The thing you follow through the first half of the game shows traits of both characters.
Meteor would have caused widespread death and destruction had it not been stopped. That was a merely a side effect, but still.

I think the closest that Xenogears gets to using the term 'Seraphim' is in the name of the Element Seraphita. All the Elements are named after categories of angels, but they got seriously mangled in translation.

Final Fantasy 7
The thing you're following which looks like Sephiroth, is really Jenova. It has traits of Sephiroth because Sephiroth was infused with Jenova cells while Lucrecia was pregnant with him, so really, Sephiroth is just an experiment of Hojo's, and is likely to behave like Jenova since a good portion of him is Jenova. The real Sephiroth is dead through out the whole story. Cloud killed him when he threw him into the mako reactor, I believe in Nibelheim. He really did die, and really never comes back to life. At one point, you see Sephiroth's corpse frozen in mako.
I'm sorry Im getting so off topic. So I'll give a FF6 spoiler regarding Doom Gaze really quick, to get back on topic
you can cast Vanish and then Doom on Doom Gaze for an instant kill, and you still get the Bahamut magicite
There ya go.

You know how Vanish and X-Zone can be useful at ridding yourself of monsters? Do that with Doom Gaze, and you can kiss the Bahamut Magicite shard goodbye. Just take him down without that little short-cut.

It was intended as a sarcastic comment as the flow of conversation was digressing somewhat into other FF games.

I agree! Kefka was always my favorite villian...
