Why because why is 3+a going to help you with?

x-rays are based on a matrice system of unknowns that is solved by a computer. there are well over a million variables in such a system per equation. the computer did not come up with a way to solve this system on its own.

chaos: Sometimes, in certain cases you have to work backwards, and actually change numbers into letters to make things easier, then figure it out again once you've reached another stage.

Rubedo: When I was younger, though, I found algebra a complete waste of time, and now, I regret those words.

Algebra teaches you abstract thought. We need more of that in the world.

Algebra is just a building block for greater things. The computer you typed that with, for example. Math was necessary to create most if not all of the modern technological benefits we enjoy today.

Plus it's way fun!

You use algebra every single day and you don't even know it! It comes in a lot of handy when doing finacial things when it comes to stocks, bonds, interest, loans and your credit card bills. If you were to say calculas then I wouldn't really complain becaues the average person does not need to know anything about that math. Algebra is pretty much a must though.

I don't see a point in algerba either. I didn't even know they taught algerba in school? That algebra stuff is very important, however.

Math is taught incorrectly in school, I think. Profs don't show you real world applications to the stuff you're doing. At least not any of the professors I've had.

Thats what word problems are suppose to do...but they don't do a great job of it.

I know I use algebra on a fairly regular basis, and I'm not in math anymore. It's just a basic math skill that you need to know.

Calculus, however, I can count the number of times it's been useful to me on one hand. And by "useful" i mean "would have allowed me to win a geeky arguement"

Algebra is unbelivably useful. The number of calcs I do to reverse engineer my required output to figure out what input I need (read : How many stats I need to get maximum damage) is staggering at times :p

because as a civil engineer algebra provides the first mathmatical building block to contruct the equations that would be nessecary to build this thing!

I don't even like Brian. Why should I bother to do Algebra for him?

Seriously though, Algebra is a very useful way of expressing common sense problems. Some of it may only come in handy on very rare occasions, but you will find yourself using it from time to time.

That said, it is an absolute horror to learn, so it's easy to understand why it's unpopular.

Wouldn't that be 3a, as apposed to 3+a? o_O

Del said it. It's to build towards other things.

I'm a math major, and even when I took Linear Algebra and multi-variable calc and Astrophysics, I needed to use basic algebra skills. I'm going to be a math teacher, and in turn what I learned then will help me teach others how to learn...and the cycle continues.

Algebra quickly becomes "do in your head" math once you've gotten higher-up in math/used it enough, to the point where you don't realize you are using it. But it is probably used almost everyday in some respects (gas is $2.00 a galon, I have a $20 bill, 14.3 gallon tank, can I fill my car up?) that you don't even realize you do.

math is the funnest thing in the world, if you understand how to apply it. and the only way you're gonna do that is by learning algebra.
