View Full Version : Usernote Spam.

Aarrggggh!! My Usernotes have been spammed! I was browsing my profile after changing my av/sig and I noticed my usernotes had 176 notes, from 23, so I looked into it and I found nonsense. You want proof? Here's the proof.

<a href="http://forums.eyesonff.com/usernote.php?u=8&pp=30&page=1">proof.</a>

I'm not asking to have this guy banned, but is it possible to mass delete multiple unwanted notes or delete the entire Usernote to 0?

I don't want to go through 6 pages of spam deleting what I got. :(

Why haven't any of the message forum comapnies added an option to completely disallow double posts? :p That would surely help solve a lot of repeated spamming.

What about the " the administrator has specified that a user can only post every 30 seconds" thing? mybe its a glitch or something durring the server move?

User notes are fun but when people abuse something it gets taken away. I think we may have a 'no user note' usergroup but I can't be sure. We'll discuss it. The mass delete thing is beyond me, though.

I have over 1300 user notes. Do you hear me crying? Well yes, you do, but I can't help it...whenever I see these romantic movies I just...I...:crying:

I like usernotes. A lot of people do. Often they're more entertaining than the forums. So leave them.

User notes are the only way I feel loved and get attention. Without them, who is Meat Puppet? :whimper:

EDIT: Actually, that might be reason to get rid of them. I like them and they can be fun when there's not pages and pages of one user posting something stupid.

Psychotic

Exactly! Why should we delete things some people don't like? Personally, I really don't like Eyes on each other. However, I don't call for its deletion, because I tolerate others' likes and dislikes, and I know a lot of people like it, just as a lot of people like the silly nonsense in usernotes.

Besides, without usernotes, it would probably have to be posted on the boards somewhere... :)

And as for the one person spamming it thing, that could easily happen anywhere on the boards. Hey, let's delete the whole forum in case someone spams it! :rolleyes2

Meat Puppet
11-30-2004, 10:21 PM
And if we just used PMs, I don't have the pleasure of anyone being able to see them.

If there was an option to delete multiple user notes at any one time that might make it easier, but I don't think they should be rid of.

Mountain out of a molehill indeed indeed! Over 10,000 usernotes and over 1,300 of them are Psy's. That's a good chunk of database you've got there.

I don't see the harm in usernotes, however it would be nice if we could make some kind of limitations - eg, people only being able to make one post for each user, or people only being allowed to post so many usernotes, or people who abuse them not being able to post them anymore. Well, the latter is pretty easy, we just need to uncheck a box in their profile, but y'no.

While I'm not for the removal of usernotes, I'm not against it, and if they are removed, I can understand why.

Then similarly, don't you think we should have limitations on the amount of posts people can post elsewhere? Eg, people only being able to make one post for each topic, or people only being allowed to post so many posts, or people who abuse posts not being able to post anymore. :)

If you think usernotes should be comparable to forum posts, I'd shut your mouth before we ban a whole lot of you for things such as excessive spam, excessive double posting, constantly posting off topic, etc. etc. etc. :p Don't dig your own grave, Psy.

*digs own grave quite happily*

They are comparable to forum posts in how enjoyable they are, though. Like I said, I, and presumably others enjoy posting in them, a lot more than they would in normal threads. Why discriminate against them?

Besides, there's nothing in the rules about usernotes whatsoever. I searched "note", so unless they're defined as something weird in there, it's safe to say it'd be unfair to ban someone if it's not officially against the rules. :p

Actually, a usernote is just a form of post, so this rule is quite quotable in that regard...

Banning is permanent. Everyone gets at least one warning by PM before we ban you, except in extreme cases. Extreme cases include mass spamming or advertising, posting or linking to porn or even porn-related / implied material, or posting extreme disturbing content, all of which will get you banned without warning.
However, as you may have noticed, we HAVEN'T banned you, yet. We can also make and get rid of whatever rules we agree to make or get rid of. Just because something isn't written doesn't mean we can't do anything. There's actually a REASON we haven't, yet, and that's because we'd like to give them a chance. Keep in mind there are quite a lot of reasons we can get rid of them, and the only reason to keep them is because there are people who like using them. You shouldn't be accusing us of discrimination. You should be thanking us for allowing them in the first place. :) At EoFF, usernotes are used as a luxury feature for the members.

But someone might not realise that despite reading the rules thoroughly. Perhaps it should be made clear, if that's the staff's view on it. People are not at fault for breaking rules that haven't been stated.

Sure, you can ban people for a rule you just invented, there's no dispute over that. My point was: Is it fair? And just how far would you extend these theoretical usernote rules? Many people have posted SOMETHING in user notes, but can you be sure every single member hasn't posted something off-topic, spammy, etc etc? :)

I'm not really trying to argue with the staff about this, and watch me thank you folk for them, in fact: Thank you for usernotes! I'm more concerned with other people who posted previously saying "Let's get rid of them altogether", which I presume is because either they don't like them or because one individual posted spam in Proto's.

And again I'll say that's why nobody has been banned. :smash:

To be honest, I don't see usernotes lasting long term unless something is put in place to restrict them in some way. The fact that it'll end up being 80-90% of usernotes being posted by a small group of members and all those usernotes taking up a lot of valuable database-space will eventually lead to mass-prunings, removal of usernotes or very strict rulings.

eestlinc
12-01-2004, 01:17 AM
why can't you just send a PM if you want to tell somebody something? Usernotes can be useful for making a comment about a certain user (like "The Captain can pilot my ship any day!") but there shouldn't be dialogue there.

I'd volunteer to be the usernote police, go in and keep them clean and appropriate and somewhat uncommon, but I'd probably need some serious forum permissions to do so.

Baloki
12-01-2004, 01:22 AM
I don't want the feature removing I just want a way of being able to remove multiple usernotes at once to save me going through 100+ I have...

Cz
12-01-2004, 10:05 AM
I see no reason to remove user notes whatsoever. As long as Psy and co don't mind having their notes spammed then I don't see why taking them away would work.

User Notes should be subject to some forum rules, since porn and foul language are bad wherever they're posted. However, putting them on the same level as ordinary posts makes no sense at all. Chemical analogies aside, they are a completely different form of discussion. Go into FFVII and you expect threads about How to Revive Aeris, go into The Lounge and you expect threads about TV and Movies, but go in to User Notes, and what do you expect? User Notes don't have a topic, so I'd assume that they are for the use of the member who they belong to. If the member wants to use them for spam, that's up to them.

Of course, the sheer number of spam notes poses a problem, but that's a problem that can be easily remedied. Frankly I don't care about 75% of the notes posted in my profile, and the same is probably true of most other people. The answer could be either to have a 'delete all notes' button as Baloki suggested, or to limit each user to 250 notes at once, similar to PMs.

User Notes have been a great source of entertainment in recent months, at times keeping this place fun when the ordinary threads just couldn't. If they go, I go.

Actually, that's a stupid threat. How about 'If they go, I'll be really, really unhappy'?

That's better. :)
