I think nine has a connection with 1 becous in the first one Garland tried to take the world by force and in nine he uses the spiret stuff. Also the four gurdians are in the first one and in nine so is it a connection

Depends in which type of connection you mean.

If you mean that they are the same Garland, which was magically send through space-time from a game to another, I don't think so. =x
One was a knight, the other was a being created to preserve his planet's life.

If you mean a relation more like... "Random guy from square: I'm lazy. Let's re-use names from our old games so we don't have to research for other cool looking mythological names" Then yes.

Honestly, besides the names I don't think there is any relation.
