I'm a big fan of watching DVD movie on my computer, even though I've been recommended not to. However, there are a few DVDs that have sound that just wont play. The sound play on the opening splash screens (universal, etc).. but the sound in the actual DVD doesn't go at all, it's just silent.

And no, they're not silent movies.

I use InterActual Player for playing the DVDs. I'm not sure if the DVD zone makes any difference... I've had this problem with 0 and 4 (the only zones I use) but some other DVDs of the same zone don't have this problem.
It might be the newer DVDs having this problem, I'm not sure.

All my DVDs are also PAL. I checked.

Are there optional language or mono/stero/dolby audio tracks that aren't getting selected automatically?

You could also test with a different player too to make sure it's not your current one that doesn't like something.

I had a problem with Intervideo WinDVD on my PC not outputting sound. I Tried PowerDVD 5 and that worked fine, so it may be a problem with the software.

You can always try playing them in Windows Media Player as well.

Windows Media Player was just as bad, if not worse.

I'll try PowerDVD and see what happens.

What about Media Player Classic too? (No it's not the same as Windows Media Player.) That has a few built in audio codecs too, if it's a missing codec that's actually causing your problem.

probably a missing codec. I don't know what it is, what you're talking about. I just downloaded "Intervideo WebDVD" or something, and it has working sound but now the video is all rotten.

You might need the latest version of DivX or your DVD codac might be bust. Uninstall Interactual player and reinstall it and that should reinstall the DVD codac too :D

DVDs use MPEG2 for video, not DivX.

It has to do with some dvds only havind dolby output or surround sound only and your computer not being capable. I downloaded a dvd that had "DTS only" and it was mute in my computer but it worked on my tv.

Read second part :pSo what's the point of mentioning Divx in the first place if you know it can't possibly be the problem at all?

He might need DivX one day, next time I'll include Linux and Firefox as well

Instead of iteractual, you should consider either getting a good piece of DVD software or trying VLC.

What makes it better? Is it worth getting? My dvds are running perfectly now and I have no complaints.

Since all works there is not need to switch. I was just mentioning VLC for the heck of it.
