I'm going to be as useless as possible here, because I really don't know any more than this:

I download torrent files. Sometimes they lag up my gaming experience, so I pause the downloads. Internet access promptly becomes non-existent. I lag out of IM programs. I can't load webpages, and my online game disconnects. My pinging of yahoo.com times out.

I re-start the torrents and all is fine in the world. What's going on?

emerge bittorrent
btdownloadcurses.py filename.torrent --max_upload_rate 10

I don't experience any lag or problems with that.

I prefer the graphical based clients like Azureus myself :p

Mainly Azureus, because I've set it up so that all I have to do it scp .torrent files to my router and Azureus will autodownload it for me without me having to touch anything else :p

Explain using more words...words that form phrases which form sentences which produce the idea from the onset of your thought pattern from start to end of the subject matter of focus.

edit: it seems my suspicions were correct, as you have given me linux help for a winXP SP2 O/S. Mighty fine move, my arch nemesis!
