that seems like a very drastic solution... which version are you playing, ps or pc?

A rather unorthadox method which I have dubbed the "coathanger" method sometimes works for me. Basically it involves keeping the playstation disc area open. At the back should be a pushable button. You can't really put your finger back there without inteferring with the cd. So I usually use a bent coathanger with a weight on the end. This is NOT recommended for the most part, and will probably invalidate your warranty or somesuch, but it just works sometimes for some reason.

if u still have ur ps1 just play the game to a point where u think it wont stall anymore or just use a friends.. Alot of old ps1 games tend to skip stall or not work all together in ps2

the coathanger method does NOT invalidate your warranty. All it does is fool the system into thinking the lid is shut when it isn't. To invalidate your warranty you have to actually modify your system in some way. Try resurfacing the disc.

i dont kno if u can change the camera angle in ffvii, i never tried. how do you do it?

i tried using my ps1 and it STILL froze. it froze just as many times as my ps2.

also, resurfacing???meaning.......i should clean my disk?

Funny, when my PS1 started crashing on FFVII, it was due to the PS. When I played with PS2, it worked! Not true with FFVIII, Xenogears :(

Your game is new? Take it back!

Oh, I have an idea. I did this when my PS1 was getting stuck on Disc 2, starting with the crater, and then with Vincent's cave. It would never load the screen and would occasionally give me "du dun" sounds. Well, I came up with the bright idea to SWITCH DISCS while it was hanging. Disc 3 worked just fine, but it might crash at a few points, like FMVs. Just remember to switch Disc 2 in before movies and hope they don't crash. Don't worry; you can switch discs while it's not doing anything, like in the middle of dialogue or in your menu. Hell, you can do stuff in your menu with no disc.

EDIT: but that's how a PS1 behaves. Oh, but I did it to my PS2 just to see what would happen, and FFVII lets you get away with changing discs when you're not supposed to on PS2, too. You can just leave your good disc in there until FMV.

You can change the angle either with select or with one of the shoulder buttons. Try to do it the moment when you leave town.

No, I think changing discs is a better idea. She should have gone in with the different camera angle if you want to immediately change the camera. If it starts hanging on you, I think your controller locks up.

GLR refers to the world map.

Yep, you can only change the camera on the world map and in battle (config).

Too bad your controller locks up, so she can't change the camera angle, unless she put in a better disc.
