how long is it for a newbie not to be a newbie anymore?

Mindflare
12-29-2004, 08:54 PM
It's all a matter of the person's outlook on it. There's a point where nobody really knows.

I think a person is no longer a newbie when there is no doubt that they've been accepted into the community and when they understand the rules and begins to follow them.

Edit: I should start using whole sentences. >.<

I've been here over 2 years, yet I'd say the majority of people don't know me, so by that right, I could be a newbie.

Your user name was not "screwed" it was merged with your first name because you keep re-registering.

Two and a half years now? June 6, 2002 is when I joined . . . I think. I'm to lazy to check.
Whether or not you're a newb is based soley on you, I suppose. It's how you carry yourself around the board. I've seen people who have been here for months who I still consider a newb while at the same time I've seen a newb post in a thread after his 'entrance' thread and didn't think of them like a newb anymore. ^_^

I wish I were still a newbie, gives me an excuse to 'accidently' do wrong. -evil grin- =3

Most see it as no custom title = newbie, But it depends on the person.

Almost three years ago, I made a list of every person I considered to be a veteran, and everyone who wasn't on the list was a newbie. I haven't looked at the list since I first made it, but I'm pretty sure not too much has changed.

If you have to ask that question...yes, you're a newbie. When you're not a newbie anymore, you won't have to ask, and you probably won't care.

For what it's worth, I remember the newbie days of everyone who has posted in this thread.

Kishi's newbie days were more memorable (and less numerous) than the rest of them combined ;)

For what it's worth, I remember the newbie days of everyone who has posted in this thread.Back in my more or less Newbie days I posted somethig in the Xenogears forum (yes, there used to be one) that was close to "I'd sure hate for my hibiscus to get a "something". It was a quote from the girl that said it about a flower in the Xenogears game and Kishi closed it. I PM'd him to ask why and he yelled at me :( I too, used to post like a newbie!

Simply the fact that so many people had to come out and ask (like a newbie, I might add) whether or not they are newbies proves in my mind that they are still newbies.

And I hold no illusions as to my own newbie-hood. I've been here for 363 some odd days, almost a year, but I've had something like a 6-month hiatus where I never even looked at this site. And I am most definately a newbie.

muchacho

everyone is a newb!

Sepho

My registration date says I've been here nearly two years, but that's because I made an account once, posted a couple times, then forgot completely about at and was on hiatus from the internet altogether. I just recently starting posting regularly, so I can be considered a newbie in that regard.

I think whether or not one is a newbie is a very subjective case, one where registration date and post count are irrelevant. I think it's a mentality, rather. I'm in the habit of completely ignoring post count and registration date when reading posts in a thread, because I've been to a couple forums, one I'm a long-time member of, where the so-called oldbies would spend more time harassing the newer members then they would setting a good example. Additionally, the importance of a high post count caused an unbelievable amount of spamming. The situation escalated to a point where the administrators resorted to removing post count and reg date information from the thread displays.

I don't entirely believe that a person can come onto a forum and not receive a little "newbie treatment" in good fun, but I've seen it taken to the exteme, and it is ugly (forum drama!!).

By the way, I've seen arguments develop that there's a difference between a "newb" and a "n00b", and the argument isn't that bad. The newbie would simply describe a person new to the forums, and isn't representative of posting habits, whereas a n00bie could be a person who has spent any length of time on the boards, may continually spam and really just fits in with "n00b mentality", if you will.

Thats pretty much why post counts were taken away from here, from what I hear. I think we set a good example with our Noobers. As long as they don't break any of the rules they don't get any negative treatment. If they do, they're informed what they did was wrong and we move on.

Sepho
12-31-2004, 04:26 AM
Oh, I hadn't even noticed that there were no post counts (like I said, I never look for them). It's a good tactic, and now just another reason for me to like this forum (as if I needed one).
