i tried reinstalling my sp1 after i formatted my computer and when i click the autorun i get an error message saying

the automated page didn't start properly and i need an administrator account. but i'm positive i am the comp admin.

or

you click 'no' on ie security warning dialog box. make sure you click yes and press f5.

i am not aware of it but i'm sure i didn't clicked no on something.

btw. when you have sp2 do you still need to install sp1?

If you have SP2 you cannot install SP1 as SP contains SP1 if that makes any sense, and if you find you cannot get it to run and you have no service packs (although most versions of windows XP now have SP1 built into it) on startup keep tapping F8 and then choose Safe Mode :)

As Baloki said, try installing in Safe mode.

Active X is definately not your problem. And don't activate it. >.<

my sp1 installer doesn't just include sp1 but directx and media player 9. so ie is used for autorun

Internet Explorer is never used for autorun.

i checked the folders they have bunch of ie icons and these pages are exactly the same when i clicked autorun.

the automated page refused to run so im guessing i turned off something.
