After Scholes leaving the international scene, and the crucial second stage of the World Cup qualifiers just round the corner, I was thinking who should be England's 4th midfielder. It looks like we've finally got some kind of a replacement for Seamen in Robinson, the defence and our strike-force pick itself.

Gerrard and Lampard are world class players, Beckham is overrated but provided he works hard he deserves his place in the team.

But of course, none can beat the almighty Shaun Wright-Phillips! They'd have to put Beckham in the centre and either Lampard or Gerrard on the left, though.

I'd have to say Shaun Wright-Phillips deserve's a chance on the right of midfield. But I can't see Sven dropping Beckham.

It'll never happen (due to the intense media backlash that would result) but I too would like nothing more than to see David Beckham dropped in favour of Shaun Wright-Phillips. While Stuart Downing is an extremely exicitng prospect, Shaun would add so much pace and flair to the team if he were added. He's as good a playmaker as Beckham, even if his work from set plays doesn't match up.

I understand that Becks is a phenomenal player on his day, but he's failed to perform recently, whereas Wright-Phillips has been doing quite the opposite.

However, since Sven isn't going to drop Beckham, I'd have to pick Stuart Downing, simply because the value of a strong left-sided midfielder is so great to England right now. Not to mention that Downing is an excellent crosser of the ball, and shows remarkable awareness for such a young player. From a practical standpoint, he'd be my choice for England's fourth midfielder.

I still voted for Shaun on the poll though, since he'd be my choice in an ideal set of circumstances. :)

Kieron dyer as he and Jenas work great together look at the alliance when they are playing with Newcastle if you put the duo on the team it'll be great anyway shearer should of stayed on and maybe we'd of won the world cup and euro 2004

Shearer would never get in the England setup now and Dyer doesn't deserve to be, what's he done to warrant a place over either Downing or Wright-Phillips? Wright Phillips will most likely play out on the left as Sven does not have the balls to leave Beckham out, which is a shame because I would like to have seen Downing and Wright-Phillips play on left and right respectively for the next day. Hopefully Becks will suffer a career ending injury.

EDIT: I'm sure we've had this debate several times since Euro 2004.

EDIT 2: Who voted for 4-3-3? We'd get ripped apart as soon as we came up against a team that could defend properly. Geez.

We are obviously talking about one of the world's greatest teams (England) on the world greatest stage (international) of the best - bar none sport in the world (football a.k.a soccer).

We are deciding who should play in Midfield with David Beckham (surely even you've heard of him), Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

By the way, I voted Downing. Though Wright-Phillips has more flair and pace, Downing is naturally left footed. It'd be better than playing Wright-Phillips on the right, Beckham in the centre with either Gerrard or Lampard with him and the other one on the left.

And who voted Phil Neville. I'm a United fan, but i'd choose all of them over him!
