Well, maybe. Stop letting people make posts that are just quotes from other people. It is so god damn stupid it makes my head hurt, unless it's a "What's your favorite this or that" thread. Then it's just lazy. I mean, christ, you can't type out what your favorite icecream is? All you have the energy to do is press quote and then press enter?
But what's the WORST is when people do it in, like actual discussion threads, or eoeo help threads. No one cares that you agree with whatever smitty said down to a very tee you can't elaborate on it one bit. You don't have anything to say, don't talk. Especially not in helping threads. "Hmm, that smitty has some good ideas, but I don't know... Oh, here's what he said again, only it's centered in a quote box. I'll do it!"
There has got to be some secret underground way to keep track of post counts, and a place where these people talk about how cool they are, that I don't know about, and that's why people do it. Otherwise I have NO IDEA why someone would do that, other than pure laziness.
Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way. I sure hope not.

I'm not a fan of someone who quotes and doesn't expand with any of their own thoughts at all, although I'm sure that I'm guilty of doing that a few times myself, but I don't see any way that you can stop someone from doing something like that so it should be something that just gets chalked up to being a pet peeve.
EDIT: Or we can ban them. :)

People are going to quote others out of laziness, and that they might agree fully with what is said. Yes, it's annoying. No, I don't think it should be disallowed, but if someone's going to quote someone, they better have something to add, especially in the serious forums such as EoEO.

I'm sure there's some way to put them in a group that turns whenever they use the quote button or tags into a big rant about how much they suck. You make special user groups for pretty much anything else someone can do wrong. :O
Edit: Oh, sorry pr00t. Do you do that a lot or something? See, that's another thing! You can't notice someone if all they post is someone else's words! People don't usually read big long quotes if they've already read the post it's from, unless it's a point by point counter argument. You don't want people to skip your posts, do you pr00t?!

I agree with you that EoEO should have more than just a quote, but the members that make the quote are maybe someone who are not very good with expressing themselves on the particular topic and at the same time want the thread starter to know that they are still supporting them in whatever small way that they can.
EDIT: Yams and Lord Krankie: Sure! Why not? :)
Would it be a problem if they simply typed, 'I agree with Person X' instead? That seems just as bad to me, since they're not adding anything to the discussion, and they also waste the reader's time by having them re-read Person X's post.
What I mean to say is, is the problem that people aren't adding to the topic, or merely the way that they do so (with a lone quote) which is bothering you?
MecaKane
01-21-2005, 09:36 PM
A quote and "I agree with X" wouldn't be so bad, if it was somewhere where someone's gathering opinions, just because it's not as lazy. You can't be lazy on the internet. It's not right.

If someone already said it, why do you need to say it? Except for certain mod admin thingys, and if someone's ever so interested in what everyone's favorite icecream is.
And it's even more convenient to say "Oh, well that guy said what I was going to say anyway, I can't really add anything in here so I guess I won't post." Well not outloud. >_>

I don't see why it bothers you so much, especially if it's done in General Chat. So what? People are lazy for not typing their own sentence? True, but it seem as if you are upset becauce you've already read that statement?! Oh Noes! :D Read it again and don't be lazy?
For the most part, when I've seen it done in EoEo or in the World Events threads people are quoting others to directly debate or point out the things they agree with and expand upon that point.

True, but it seem as if you are upset becauce you've already read that statement?!
And no. I'm annoyed that people think doing that's fine and dandy. It's like if someone posted porn, if it's all tame and stuff, I'll still be annoyed, not because I think boobs are gross, but because that person thought that was a perfectly fine thing to do. Kind of an extream example, I'm not saying people who that should get banned no questions like pornies, but yadda yadda.

I, personally, could not give a damn about this issue. However, that's one of the functions of Feedback: giving suggestions. Be they technical, aesthetic, big, small, whatever. People, especially staff, shouldn't say "it doesn't matter" to this sort of feedback, because it obviously matters to the person who suggested it. It's also really annoying.

It "doesn't matter" when it's something we can't control. What are we supposed to do, remove the ability to quote?

I was SAYING that "in my opinion" it's not a big deal. Isn't the point of feedback to get other opinions on what you are complaining about?
Quoted posts don't have to bother anyone, why not just ignore them? So that's my suggestion of how it could easily be resolved.
I never said, hey you shouldn't have posted this thread, it doesn't matter. No, I said that quoted posts don't matter, in my opinion in the great scheme of things.

You said anything that doesn't offend someone doesn't matter. Therefore, the vast majority of Feedback doesn't matter. Also, yes, other opinions are valid, but only if you say WHY it doesn't matter("easy to ignore," yadda yadda yadda).
