Different versions of Kingdom Hearts?

Hello, I'm considering buying Kingdom Hearts. Whilst looking at various websites i have found that there is a Japan only version of the game called something like "Final Mix" that has added content compared to the US version. Now this may seem like a stupid question but how does the US version compare to my native european version? Are there any major differences?
