View Full Version : WHY! Why God WHY!??

Why do i love this game so freaken much!? The graphics are...terrible! THe backgrounds are great, and the FMV's are pretty good too, and hell, i can even stand hte battles though to a lesser degree than the first two. however, i cannot stand moving around these blocky disproportioned character...and yet there are so many other redeeming qualties to the game.
The plot...you could make a damn movie out of this plot. and i don't mean something http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifhttp://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gifty like the crap that came out this year in thearters. I have absolutely no problems with the plot, in fact, if more games had a plot like this, i think video game novels would be created....think about it...a full length novel, but in video game form. Entertaining, and yet enlightening.
Sound....OMFG it ranges between okay and putting a man on the verge of impaling himself with the controller. I have heard a few good tunes here and there, nothing specatacular yet though. i am at the part where you go to the space city, recruit cid, steal the broken sea plane, and i have recruited Yuffie from that forest across the river just before Red XIII's village. One thing i wish they had done was put in some voices, and Yes, i understand that at the time this may have been infesible seeing as how this damn game is three disks long alreay, but hell, it would have been nice!!!
Gameplay is so so...it's nice how things can be mind numbingly boring in that at my level....i just ruin around the world and keep pressing O whenever i get into a battle. i win, wake up from my nap, and continue on. The boss battles can be pretty engaging, but smart people like me do not have a real problem with them, seeing as how i rule.
Conclusion?
I had many misgivings about this game when i first started playing it, but now i have come to enjoy it quite a bit. the MIDI music burrowing deeper and deeper into my brain is something i have to cope with....that and dealing with my newly reviived imagination...an imagination needed to make me see better graphics, and anti-aliasing of things to make them look pretty.
IN breif: could have used a MGO (Massive graphical overhall), some NON-MIDI music (or at least some kick ass techno), more of a real time battle engine? (best to leave the formula along i guess...they did get it right the first time.), and some voice acting, at least in the in game movies.
I still can't figure out why i mindlessly play this game for over three or four hours a day...subliminal messaging??? I guess it's the plot really...and the extreme easiness of this game that relaxes me.
why are you all so addicted to this game even though it has been like 7 years since it came out?

The story, thats the reason anyone is ever addicted to a game, usually, because of the story. You think you rule now but three words u need to remember:Ruby and Emerald.

finally, finally we have converted another. Listen brothers to his testimony. I play it because I like to screw around with materia combinations, seriously materia is the most fun to combine, the story was good too, but it was all about materia. Materia, Materia, Materia.

I've played through both VI and VII multiple times, and I'm torn as to which one is truly my favorite. VII was so great for so many reasons: first, the story and characters were very unique. Cloud is easily the best main character of any of the FF games, especially after being recently exposed to whiny Tidus and a giggly, teen-aged Yuna. It took me another play-through of VII to be reminded that it has the best soundtrack of all the FF's too, though VI is a VERY close second (unrelated sidenote: same goes for Chrono Trigger). All that being said, I think there are three things that really set VII apart from any other video game, period: materia, the Gold Saucer, and raising Chocobos. Materia allowed you to get REALLY creative with the capabilities of your characters, as well as put together outrageous combos with the right amount of building and planning. The Gold Saucer had so many activities (roller coaster/battle arena/chocobo racing/arcade) that added a whole new dimension to the game, you could almost make a video game out of the Gold Saucer alone. They tried to duplicate this idea in X-2 with the Calm Lands, but unfortunately it's terribly lame. Raising Chocobos was extremely time- and gil-consuming, but the rewards of using that Gold Chocobo make it all worthwhile. Not to mention the gigantic challenge of trying to destroy either Ruby and/or Emerald Weapon, both of which are much harder than Sephiroth. There was just so much to be done in this game, you can play it time and again and each time go in a completely different direction with your characters. For an RPG, it has an extremely high replay value, and that's saying a hell of a lot.

The graphics were groundbreaking. No other RPG had ever done anything like this in a game this big (not many RPG's were this big either)The graphics looked brilliant on the pc. The Music is great. Its not limited to one theme the way FFIX was medieval in most (or all) of its music. The fantasy was totally original. No other RPG had a city setting (not many anyway). The characters are brilliant too. They've all got there own little story in the game and they all seem to grow during the game. VIII's characters were detailed but except for Squall they all pretty much stayed the same.

I much prefer the short blocky people with hands 10x thicker than their arms
and about 3 different colours on their whole body
than the stupid realistic people in FFX
God I HATE That game
Out of the game ive played 7 has the best music/story/graphics/replay value
and also the characters were the best
most other games (not incl. 6) i cant choose a party cause there is not enough good combinations
but in 7 (and 6) there are too many good combinations

im up to Nibelheim in ff7 and ive enjoyed it so far but all those censors where bad, the music is brilliant but i prefer 8s Cloud is better than Squall as he has a better history and is more social but Squall didnt go schizofrenic (or did he?) the Materia system was alot better as it was it was fun instead of junctioning which was all automated practically whilst the Materia system is easier and more manual so you can have fun with it and level up. 8 is my favourite as it had something that got me addicted to it but 7 sadly has more glitches in it but has a way better story and character evolution than 8 it was aimed more to teens except the ~!$% thing, really square should concentrate on getting the game to be more opened to teens unlike 9 and 10 with annoying chars such as Steiner, Zidane, Tidus, Yuna and Wakka. (apologies to FFX char worshippers) since the loner nature was better plus with most modern ffs the main chars are usually 17.
ive only started 7 so im gonna need to keep going to see why people love 7 so much.
can't wait for the PS2 release as it will have stunning graphics and cleaned up MIDI music as the PS2 can handle alot more than its predecessor the PS one

Your damn right it's over-rated!

chaos: And all those qualities, I believe, are over recognized. Some people complain on how people shouldn't turn away from FFVII because of the (somwhat) sub-par graphics, yet, those same people are seen shunning FFVI, and the other 2d predeccesors.
Rubedo: If those games were actually played a lot more, then I wouldn't mind all of the praising. But right now, I find FFVII VERY overrated.
Trowa: The thing that gets to most is: Sephiroth. "The perfect villan- oooh" and "He's evil, and has pretty boy hair  ". He isn't even present most of the time, and him "going evil" was nothing big. "OMFG him and Cloud wer friends b4 but now their not and their gonna fight OMFG" got annoying too. :D

Well, I haven't heard anything related that, but if they are planning to re-release it, it better not be a re-hash of the first game. It should have better graphics, better sounding music, analog control, and definetly some extra features (like maybe a preview of AC & CC).
I'm still not sure whether or not it should have VO, because since there was none in the original game, it put more emphasis on the music as opposed to the VO (that's probably why ff10's music wasn't so great) and if there was VO, they might consentrate more on that than the music (which was one of the reasons I loved the game so much).

I don't think there are any news of them working on the remake, yet. Will they ever make a remake of FFVII? I hope so.
But I hope they don't totally improve it while destroying the gameplay. If they remake it, they're pretty good at not ruining it. FFVI on FFA was not turned into a PS game, graphics or soundwise, and I'm glad they didn't, after I grew to love the game. (Although, I would have liked if they put voices in the opera scene.)
But if it's exactly the same, I won't get it.
I don't think there is any reason to re-release it, due to the original getting re-released, I think. Like, on Playstation Platinum? Add that to the fact that the PS2 utulised backward compatibility. It's not that hard to get the original game, unlike all the previous FF's on the ancient NES and SNES (hence, those were all rereleased (III on DD)).
Gregoriev
01-28-2005, 01:05 AM
if they just improve the graphics while keeping the entire game itself exactly the way it was (maybe adding in a bunch of awsome side quests) or something) then it will cause another final fantasy boom just like it did back in the day.

Everything is good with this game... oh, well... everything but the fact that Ultima Weapon is way too weak and that you can't controll Vincent when he's in limmitbreak-mode. But that's all there is to it. Everything else is simply awesome.
Oh, well... I guess I have to agree with this:
Trowa: The thing that gets to most is: Sephiroth. "The perfect villan- oooh" and "He's evil, and has pretty boy hair  ". He isn't even present most of the time, and him "going evil" was nothing big. "OMFG him and Cloud wer friends b4 but now their not and their gonna fight OMFG" got annoying too. :D
I've never looked at Sephiroth as a "very evil" villian. Compared to Kefka he's a very nice boy. :)
He's far from being a "perfect villian" in my opinion. He's a good villian... but not perfect...
And he's simply not evil enough. :D

For me it was the story definatly.
I started playing it the same night I started playing 8 and first was leaning massively into 8 because of the opening compared to 7 which I started playing for 1hr before. But when I got bored of 8 (about 2hrs later) I picked up my controler again and inserted 7 once more. I played until dawn (about another 5hrs and my mom had you open the door to the game room hold me at preverbial knife point as she watched me find a save point and turn it off (then I got to do 4hrs of chores while letting my motor functions power my half-sleeping body). I could wait to play more and more, the plot *drool* was so motivating, the graphics couldn't compare to 8, but 8 just didn't have the same plot. Even after I've beaten them both I still like 7 better in that department.

I am happy to report to you all:
I BEAT DISK ONE!!!!
The ending was supposed to be really sad...am i a bad person for not carring? i guess i would have been really sad if she left for good with all the awsome materia i kept putting on her, i mean really, the physical attacks she disked out were 500-575 at BEST! At least now i can definatly feel good, because i recorded the entire FMV using a video capture card on my computer.
That particular FMV was really really good! hell, it was equivalent to something you would have seen as a really good looking cell shaded 3D game like...uh...um...Viewtiful Joe or Cowboy beebop (when it comes it...unless it already did?)
my cloud is a level 52 leaving disk one, tifa is 47, Cid is 48, and Yuffie is 46. These being the only four character I plan on using the rest of the game, i suppose they are well suited for the job. Red XIII, Barret, and Cat sith can kiss my arse. Barret is just weak, and the others look gay in battle. stats and specialties be damned! Yuffies little victory dance is really cute, and cid is just bad ass. One of his limits is to take out a stick of dynamite and light it with the cigarette he is perpectually smoking. how badass is that!? The only think that could make that more badass would be to have him in a higher resolution with more detail, alas...halo 2 it is not.
I have two enemy skill materia as well, and i guess whenever i pick up the game again i will be sending Cid with his E. Skill materia to fight the Zolem to get beta, and i will also pawn off the elemental summon monsters shiva, titan, (lightning dude), and Irift because i can replace them all with three really neat ones i got. Is there a chart somewhere that shows how good all the summons are in relation to each other? i really want to know, i mean they do all kick arse in their own way, but i want to really dish a beat down ya know? I can't remember who i have off the top of my head, but yeah, they're good.
and i can't beleive that i almost let aeris leave with Two of the three awsome summon monsters i got! I reset the game back to just before the big wall fight before leaving the temple of the ancients just because of that!
But yeah, disk one completed...now i can *finally* set the game down for two or three weeks, i have to get some REAL work done for my life and school etc.
what do you all think of my progress so far? i completed the yuffie side quest, and beat wutai tower, i also got vincent from the mansion and stuff.

02-04-2005, 02:22 AM
um.... just so you know? when she gets knocked you get all your materia back anyway. the only thing you lose out on is the armor she's wearing if i remember right.
And for the question? It's the whole atmosphere. storyline and everything isd great (and to whoever made that "video game novel" post, explain to me how this ISN'T a video game novel. this is Videogame war and peace if you ask me.) The thing with square is the attitude of all the characters and the way they interact. they have DEPTH, which is rare really, in a video game. you either have a bad ass character or a token girl character or whatever, you don't get DEPTH. thats my vote
Gregoriev
02-04-2005, 05:27 AM
yeah, bad ass or flirty ditz who kicks ass. the newest breed are characters that let you define what they are, KOTOR is a good start, though hopefully they will expand upon that. Fable was alright, but it still wasn't nearly as good as KOTOR in that area, just different.

Several people have questioned why there is no mediocrity option. The question they should be asking is "where the option for gamers so preoccupied with nostalgia and 'being different' that we failed to recognize or understand the greatness of this game?". Look, I've played every FF, and FFVII is unqestionably my favorite. That means, in my mind, it was better than FFVI, a great game nonetheless.
FFVII's story is my favorite part, of course; it was poignant, powerful, and complex. I feel that the people who criticize the story all too often are incapable of understanding all of it, especially since certain elements were left unrevealed, probably intentionally. I loved every aspect of the game, though; the music was some of Uematsu's best, the gameplay was excellent, and I actually liked the graphics.
To return to my original rant, though, it is inane at best to call FFVII 'mediocre.' That means you didn't appreciate the enormity of the game, the impact it had on society, and on the video game industry. While many people who denigrate FFVII rush to elaborate on the virtues of many RPG's which followed, remember that FFVII was the reason for the explosion of the RPG as a genre in the U.S. Further, people cared about FFVII in a way that no other video game can claim. As a matter of fact, I bet some of you still haven't given up trying to remedy certain events from the end of the first disc.
So, what your saying is, if I think FFVII is 'mediocre', as you put it, I am wrong, which means I can't have my own opinion? Because that's what I got from it. Feel free to correct me if I interpreted it wrong.
As a side note, I'd call FFVII a "good" game, about 6-7/10, based on my impression of it when it came out. Sorry I don't agree with you.

The most important thing in my opinion is the music. It is genious.
And the story in Final Fantasy 7 is also very good, but more important, how the sotry is told, even if you have a very good story, it can be told in a way that makes it very boring, but I think they managed to keep the story interesting all the way to the end, and Sephiroth is the coolest evil genius ever...
