View Full Version : Mumbling Like a Moron.

Recently, I've been making an effort to talk to more people in my religious congregation. I've had moderate success, but there's a select few people who I still can't seem to talk to. Why? Well, because they mumble every time I try to talk to them, and I can't think of what to say in response to their rather one-dimensional answers.

Eg - Me: Hi, Matthew. What did you do today?
Matthew: Umm ... Nothin' ...
Me: Oh, really? Do you have any plans for the weekend?
Matthew: Urr ... umm ... no.
Me: How's your job at the moment?
Matthew: Duuuh ... fine. ...
Me: *tears hair out*

I try my best, I really do, but there's only so much I can do to help others widen out and socialize.

So, do you mumble during conversations? Have you any friends that mumble a lot?

Must be pretty awkward for you in that situation...i guess the whole socialising thing varies in people in places like the church personally i'd rather have someone talk to me in or after church it gets boring in the homilies...so yeah but im lucky i have cousins and friends that go to the same church...!

Who knows might not have been his day...try again maybe?

As for mumbling i do but people dont listen anyways but its cool....i just mumble random stuff i dont really condecend people while mumbling i think its pretty harsh...but as for others...My english teachers rumbles constantly...always gets laughs though..have no clue what the lady is saying!

I overannunciate everything. I'm special. I got in the habit because I get tired of asking people "what?"

I usually talk too loud when people talk to me.

I don't mumble though I talk really fast sometimes.

I hate it when people don't give semi-decent answers when I try to communicate.

I'm rather loud, but a friend of mine tends to mumble a lot. When we met his voice was so low that I had to ask him his name half a dozen times. That was quite embarrassing, actually.

ha ha

How did he pronounce that?

I don't even know, it sounded like he was breathing into the phone or something

Rainecloud

So, from listening to your friend breathing down the phone you discerned that the correct spelling of the 'word' that he was uttering was 'fhsgzfjdsgfbf fsjzbfkj fshfksajxz fsajh'.

That's mighty impressive.

No. I do not allow lowlifes into my world. But I might be inclined to accidentally-on-purpose slip you in if your pocket is large enough.

6. Member moderation. It’s annoying when a spammer shows up. It’s just as annoying when non-staff members start saying things like "Oh my god you spammer" or "Close this thread!". Please don’t do that. Just ignore the jerks and let the Mods take care of it. Posting NOTHING in response to them is the best thing to do. Unless you’re a Mod, you shouldn’t be doing anything Mod-like.:)

Do I really have to tell you that I'm joking?

I'm out of touch with the humour of today's youth, I think.

Oh, I knew you were joking, or otherwise I'd make up rules about racism (There aren't any, but if I included enough in-jokes about the good ol' days, everyone would believe they were official rules!)

I mumble because my brain cannot formulate the words necessary for a thurough and accurate representation of my thoughts in the time usually expected for a reply.

See that, above? It's exactly how I feel on the subject, but it took me two minutes to write. Imagine asking me that question at a social gathering and watching me stare at you for two whole minutes before I respond. That's why I mumble.

I actuallu mumble quite a bit. I'm not really used to projecting my voice. So I always say things in a low tone.

I'll mumble for no more than five seconds. I gather my thoughts into verbal communication quite quickly. I usually only speak when something needs to be said, however. I'm more of a visual member of society.

I don't usually say anything unless I've given it a couple seconds to consider whether it's worth saying. People tend not to like standing there with huge awkward pauses while I think, so sometimes I'll say something neutral to fill the gap, to at least communicate the fact that I'm interested in having a conversation. I assume that a lot of people do this.

So ditto Del Murder, except it took me about <s>7</s> 9 minutes to type this, and I had to start over <s>twice</s> <s>three times</s> four times.

I don't usually say anything unless I've given it a couple seconds to consider whether it's worth saying.

And that's the best way to go about things, in my opinion. Offline, I hardly say anything unless I'm desperately trying to have a meaningful conversation with someone like - say - my good friend Matthew (as outlined in the first post of this thread). Online, however, it's easier to type a page full of meaningless drivel than it is to say it.

I don't have the patience for that, I realy don't care if someone doesn't think I'm smart because I spell verry with two Rs or people have to read what I say a few times to read it. Its the internet afterall. I could care less.

1st and only shot, and I don't care if it veers to the left.

It's people like YOU I feel weird in public!

Person like Rainecloud: So, Rowell, how about the JETS!!!!!!
Me: Oh.... I guess?
PLRC: So, Rowell, how'd you do on that last test?
Me: Oh, I got a ___
PLRC: Yep.... *Stretch* Hm...
Me: *Eyes move around frantically and feels awkward*
PLRC: So Rowell, do you have a job?
Me: Nah.
PLRC: Um...
Me: Yep....

I have a low voice, and people accuse me of mumbling all the time. "...those a-holes..." :p

I sort of agree with Del, except my problem is usually the opposite. My mind works at light-speed coming up with things to say, and my poor mouth has a hard time keeping up. It really sucks when my mind goes: SAY THIS! NO, WAIT, SAY THIS! and my mouth, already working as fast as it coherently can, switches responses in midword. It snowballs from there. :( :hyper: :blahblah:

That's why I like forums. I was never a spammer, but I wasn't the most coherent kid on the block, either, when I first joined. But once I realized I had plenty of time to slow down and edit what I was saying (thank God for PREVIEW POST), my posts (IMHO) started getting smarter and more coherent, and better thought-out, and some things I realized were pointless and ended up never posting. I wish we could do that in real life. The world would be in a lot less trouble that way.

BTW, I used the PREVIEW POST button on this about five times.
