View Full Version : Xenogears and eating disorders?

I think Xenogears is setting a bad example for the more gullible kids and teenagers playing the game.

For example, look at Elly. She's eighteen years old, a grown woman. She's 5'6". And she's 101 lbs. That's around 44.something kg, kids. How is that even possible? Especially considering that she fights, she must have some muscle mass in there. I'd say that this is highly improbable, if not impossible.

My point is, what is Square trying to tell the kids, through Xenogears? That they, too, must be 5'6" and 101 lbs? The increasing amount of eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, to name a few, are largely due to television and games and models, etc. Do you think that video gaming companies should be setting a better example by making more plausible characters, for their easily influenced audience?

Discuss.

People in anime tend to be unrealistically light and tall. They're like barbie dolls.

EDIT: If you're really worried, though, just take her to Bledavik or Nortune and gorge her with food.

I don't advocate barbie dolls either :-\ I think society needs to make more realistic models so that we can show kids that they are attractive even if they don't weigh 101 lbs at 5'6".

There's also that whole weight system in the game; you can check your characters' weight in the nurse's room on the Yggdrasil and all. Definitely inspiring insecurities.

Video game characters are very oddly proportioned. Final Fantasy is notorious for this, especially the earlier ones like Final Fantasy IV. Cecil weighs like 120 lbs. or something.

Look at Emeralda's weight. She most certainly is NOT anorexic.

Just looking at Elly though, I would probably guess her weight higher. And as far as the fighting, really the expectation is that she's just using her spells so she's not getting THAT much of a workout.

Doesn't Emerelda weigh 200+ pounds?

Thats a general trend in Games and anime. Remember Kid from Chrono Cross? She was probably taller then that and weighed about 99 kilos. I looked at her in each cutscene and thought " Eat something, just looking at you makes me feel malnourished". I don't see how society finds this Hollow-eyed waif look attractive, though I don't see society's logic in many areas.

...I honestly doubt that Squaresoft was trying to tell the consumers that they should start eating tofu for the rest of their lives to reach Elly's supposed weight. xDDD

Who knew -Drive- was also a weight-loss drug?

If you play "Small Two of Pieces" backwards, you'll hear, "Put down the porkchop, fatty."

Maybe she weighs 101KG and they just never did the conversion. Also she's 5.6 meters tall.

Uh.... 5.6 meters would make her about 17' tall.

Um. Not where I come from. I'm 5'0" and 96 lbs, give or take a few. I'm okay with my weight... but if I were six inches taller still weighed the same, I probably wouldn't be :P

Doc - Kane likes the tall women ;)

Well I now some guys in wrestling who make pigs of themselves, can lift quite alot... and weigh in at the 103 and 112 weight classes... the ones I am talking about also happen to be taller then my 5'6" ... not sure of thier exact height but they are taller then me :(. And if a guy can do it and still be able to lift those several hundred pound matts then I am sure a girl can do it and maintain some muscle.

Huh. xD Wrestling guys starve themselves and only drink water for several days before their tournaments, and do not consume anything for the day of their tournament. At least, that's how it went in my high school. So that when they weighed you before the tournament, you would go into a lighter weight category. Not so sure about guys taller than 5'6" weighing 103, though xD It's possible, but I can't imagine how they would retain all that muscle that is needed for wrestling.

i thought it was the opposite jojo... they need the energy so ofcourse they r going to eat.

ShunNakamura

Well We do watch what we eat... but our coach doesn't advocate starving due to the fact that you seriousally need your energy. One of our star wrestlers(he is the state champ this year in his weight) in years before would starve himself down.... and then EVEN I COULD beat him. and Our old 103 is famous for pigging out, in fact if he didn't make weight it was usually because of those extra snickers bars he had eaten before the match.

In wrestling we eat... we just moderate it... at least if we are worried about weight classes we do... our 103 didn't need to worry because we had no 112 lb'er meaning that if he did weigh over he still had a spot. This year I had to watch my weight... but I still ate at least 2 meals a day.. and on many occasions had been a pound or two under... despite the fact taht I had to first lose 12 lbs before I was at the weight class I wanted(I weiged 152-153 to start adn went down to 140). You just eat alot of poultry(chicken adn turkey) and you avoid drinking a lot of pop or water.... the water is the hard part not the food.... in fact more often then not when a wrestler is over it is due ot water consumption not food consumption. But water is easy to sweat out before a match so it is nothing serious.

Oh yeah before I forget I say this our 103 lb'er taht we had was quite special he was almost always taller then his opposition... and looked alot like a twig..... but he was still fairly strong... not bulky but stringy... and he had alot of leverage for his size. the average hieght of a 103-112 lb'er in my area is probably 5'4" or 5'5" or in other words really close to my height... in fact I am considered extermely short and stocky... being 5'6" and 140-152 lbs(no that wrestling season is over for me... I have likely put back on some weight).
