View Full Version : Worst Covers Ever

I've heard some cover that makes me feel like CRYING right now. Avril Lavigne actually dared to make a cover of System of a Down's Chop Suey. How does she have the nerve to try to do a song so good? And it's not even CLOSE to their best song.

It's horrible. Here it is: The horrible-ness. (http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/m/o/mol108/Avril_Lavigne-Chop_Suey_(System_Of_A_Down_Cover).mp3)

She botched the lyrics up horribly and sang it like 5 year old who dropped their ice cream and is sobbing and throwing a fit. The lyrics to the first part go:

"Wake up,
Grab a brush and put a little make up
Hide the scars to fade away the shakeup
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go create another fable"

And she screams out something like:

"WAKE UP HIDE THE SCARES WAKE UP WAKE UP AAAAAAA
WHY YOU LEAVE THE KEYS UPON THE TABLE WHY YOU LEAVE
THE KEYS UP THE TABLE WAKE UP WAKE UP DADADADADADA"

I don't get why she even attempted it. Any SoaD fan or even casual listener knows that Serj's voice is something you just cannot copy, not even a good singer let alone some fake singer like Avril. The only person I've heard sing similar to Serj is that Rabbit Joint guy who made the Zelda song. You can't copy him singing and you definately can't copy his screaming.

And what was wrong with her band, anyways? They didn't even play the song at all, let alone right. She probably thought she'd seem like a "ttly rock0rz punx" or some crap like that if she tried a SoaD song.

Anyways, before I explode of rage, what is the worst cover you've ever heard?

Rye.

That cover you mentioned.

Is the bane of my existance.

There is a VERY GOOD REASON why it's at 666 on my playlist.

and you summed it up very clearly.

IT *SUCKS*

[edit- judging from the filename, I have the feeling that's the exact same copy I have. *twitch*]

She butchered a Metallica song as well. I dont know why she cant be satisfied to just screw up her own horrid, pathetic music, she has to go screw up decent music as well.

Other bad ones... I dont care what anyone says, KoRn's Pink Floyd cover is horrid. Also, pretty much every Beatles cover I've ever heard. Oh, and Shiina Ringo's cover of Radiohead's Creep. Ugh.

I know there's more, but my favorite show is on and I cant concentrate.

A Korean group recently coved the song "Last Christmas". The original is horrid and depressing, and the only thing about the cover is that it's not in English. But it's still utterly terrible.

The cover of The Smiths "How Soon Is Now" is crappy. It served at the theme music for Charmed.

I'd list more, but it's late, and I can't put my mind on all the bad covers I've heard. Since I generally prefer originals over covers, I might be a bit biased.

Who did it? I know t.A.T.u did that song and I loved it.

Umm, Madonna's cover of "American Pie" was shameful. As a song itself there's not a problem, but the fact that it was that particular song remake was just wrong...you'd have to listen to the original and the remake to see what I mean.

Also, there's these commercials for "The Foundation for a Better Life" that air alot lately, and one has a cover of The Jefferson Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", and I want to die everytime I hear it.

Some chick did a cover of "Fell In Love with a Girl" by The White Stripes, but it was "Fell In Love With a Boy" instead, and I think that's the worst one I've EVER heard. I can't recall her name, but it was bad.

There's more that I can't think of right now. Lately they've been on this mass bastardization mission Codename "Disney Mania" where they destroy the charm of classic Disney numbers and turn them into purely synthisized crap. Some of them are actually good, but some are just wrong.

EDIT: OH MY GOD @ the Chop Suey cover. o____________o

xD That's painfully hilarious. I like the reactions of the people in the audience best.

"Oh s***"
"What"
"Huh?"

And then Avril goes "LALALALALALALALA!" during some parts.

xD

I didn't know Shiina Ringo did a cover of Creep o_o *searches*

Dear baby Jesus, it was on "LunaRock", and I just downloaded it off Sailormusic.net...now I'm far more pissed at them than I was before. My god, it's an abomination.

As if it wasn't enough to completely DESTROY the plot, bastardize the dialouge, cut it to pieces, and replace all the great original scores with craptasic, badly sang, synthisized crap (2 or 3 songs were an exception), but I had seen that track listed for years, and the Beatles song came to mind, but I NEVER suspected it to actually be the same song. That song wasn'y even in the show, and what the hell would "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" have to do with Sailor Moon in the first place?

I almost want them to dub Stars just to see how much insane and senseless acts they commit on it.

Holy crap, I must hear that.

The Avril Lavigne cover of "Chop Suey" almost sounds like a mockery...and I'd feel better knowing that it was, but I don't think it is. Most of her singing isn't actually words, but just "LALALALALALALALALALA". I thought Rye was just saying it as an insult to how bad it was...I didn't think it was going to actually be just that.

Oh, but Avril always sings horrible. But as long as all the little rebel kids think she's ttly sk8er punx than she keeps her job, no matter how terrible her music it. Though her music has been improving, only because :

1) You can't get any worse than Sk8er Boi
2) Ben Moody, an ex-member of Evanescence have been making her hit songs. (Ben Moody at least. I know he did Nobody's Home, he's probably made more. The melody and the lyrics, made by Ben, are great. Her voice kills the song though.)

I heard one the other day that was a cover of Mot the Hooples "all the young dudes" which was solid gold blasphemy. fortunately, i didn't catch the name of the band, elsewise i would've murdered them.
I never liked "anarchy in the USA" (cover of anarchy in the UK; sex pistols) by GNR either

the worst lately, have been all the horrible horrible horrible attempts, by NUMEROUS people to cover "give a little bit" (of your love) by Supertramp. Supertramp is incredible, and they have just been smashed and smashed and smashed as of late by commercials and such abusing their song, and artist's trying to cover it...

Although I normally do not like LP, I do give them credit for "amping" up Jay-Z's Dirt Off Your Shoulder with the riffs. I really just prefer any of The Black Album's songs over Meteora, but maybe that's just because of my affinity for rap. It's odd hearing "bitches and hoes" with LP, but oh well.

One of the worst covers that I've heard was GNR's cover of Sympathy for the Devil for the Interview With A Vampire soundtrack. Horrible cover for an ever worse movie.

I also can't stand Marilyn Manson's cover of Personal Jesus, Like a Virgin or Tainted Love. His cover of Sweet Dream is tolerable but the original is far superior and the only good cover that he's ever done in my mind is I Put A Spell On You.

But the worst offender of them all has that band who did the Thunderstruck cover for that retarded movie Varsity Blues. That song made my ears bleed and that movie made me want to poke out my eyes with rusty spoons.

It's too slow and nowhere near the origanal - And Only lines from "My baby don't mess around..." to "Nothing is forever" have been kept - The res is basically his own song! (And you should hear how he says "hey ya") :mad2:

I dislike most covers that are to different to the origonal..It's better when there similar IMHO That way it atrats both sides...The old because it's a song they heard in the past revived - and the young becuase it's a new band that may get them into the song (They may have even liked the song first!)

Jessica Simpson's cover of " Take my Breath Away ", for the Top Gun movie - not an amazing song but I liked it up until she muscled in and ruined it beyond repair with her damned cheesiness. And that sister of hers ... * punches wall *

Eminem's covers of "Dream On," and "Toy Soldiers." What's wrong, Slim Anus? Running out of original material? You had to not only rip off Aerosmith, but you also had to rip off a one-hit wonder from Kids, Incorporated, too? No wonder you're going downhill.

That sadly reminded me of... I dont know if it was a cover, but I know that it contained the same music... that song Puff Daddy did for Godzilla 2000, with the music from Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (and maybe the words, I dunno). So so sad. Kashmir is... beyond words in it's sweetness, and then Puff Daddy had to go screw it up... and damned Jimmy Page helped him. Dammit!
I wouldn't exactly call them covers, maybe toy soldiers since they have the same name and maybe the lyrics, but the others are like... what rap music is built on, rapping their own words over other people's music. Tupac's Changes, and countless others were the same way. Some follow the same subject matter and keep the chous and stuff. Good? Bad? I dunno!

Anytime ANY rapper tries to cover a classic, its horrible. Rap is bad enough as it is, and then they disgrace a classic by adding a few "uh's" and "yeah's", and the same riff or lyric in repitition. P-Diddy's cover of Kashmir is a good example, and so is that one by P-Diddy and Notorious B.I.G.'s chick after he died....whats-her-name.......damn, they did an 80's love song..originally by Sting (or the police), I think.....anybody remember the name?!? Anyways, it was horrible, that's probably why I forget it.

Most covers that Metallica did, like Blitzkreig and and Bob Seger's Turn the Page were awesome, in my opinion. Metallica actually did a better job than the original composers!!

That song was the 1983 Billboard #1 hit Every Breath You Take by The Police. The song P.Diddy did with Faith Evans was I'll Be Missing You, the lyrics were (for the verses mostly) changed quite a bit from the original.

The song was pretty good, even to people I know who were fans of The Police. It was one of the very few good rap covers if you ask me. If you think rap covers over rock songs are horrible, it's even worst the other way around. I mean Ben Folds is the best example to mind right now, he is a good talent...but it goes to waste in a cover of Dre's Bitches Ain't Sh*t. I'm sorry, no rock singer should ever try to rap...it's like, as some would quote it "An embarrassment to white people everywhere."

By a country mile....Under the Bridge by the All Saints. How dare they.

I agree.
But there was a band who did a cover of Under the Bridge even worse than the All Saints did...
It was some punk band called '36 Spoons' or something...

Yep........that is an embarrasment for a rock band to try to cover a rap (crap) song. Why any rock band would try to do that is beyond me. If I were a musical artist, I personally would have more pride and self respect than to tarnish my album, with the crap people call rap. I have never heard that song by Ben Folds Five, but I can imagine its pretty horrible. That's why you don't see it that often, because its just wrong. Its like Metallica trying to sing a Hymn.

That said, quite often you see rappers covering classic rock songs, and I personally think its stupid. And no I don't care how popular a rap cover was, they just get puffy OR Jay-Z repeating that "uh, yeah", "know-what-'am-sayin'" crap, and some chick who can sing saying the chorus over and over again. It always sucks.

Maybe that's just me and my bias for rock/alternative/metal/hardcore/etc, and actual musicianship. I never could get down with the gangsta/homeboy image, rap or R&B, or techno, or whatever.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but G4's cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. I never even listened to it all the way but nobody should be allowed to cover that song ever. Ever ever ever. Especially when they have a name like "G4". That made me sad.

I second that! I mean, they even said their version of Bohemian Rhapsody was better than the original, they have no right! They don't even have a guitar solo in it for goodness sake!

I don't see how people confuse R&B and rap. I guess it's because both are primarily African-American dominated.

I don't want to get into a whole long debate about why they're actually different (for one, R&B artists can actually sing), but R&B is more about love. It's the primary topic in R&B, songs in any R&B album are primarily all love. In rap albums, some are about gangstas, hoes, and even real life drama.

But rap and rock are actually much more similar than you might think.

R'nB is really just a general term for whatever music is currently popular with the African American community. R'nB from the 50s and 60s doesn't sound a thing like modern R'nB. 50s and 60s R'nB was really a fusion of rock and roll with classic I-IV-V blues. 70s and 80s R'nB is the classic Motown sound. Modern R'nB is heavily soul dominated, having lost really any semblence of 'rhythm' or 'blues'.

Except for that song Nas did with his dad.

But give me Muddy Waters or Taj Mahal any day.
