Ok, after looking at some sprites, I am now confused about the true gender of the black mage in Final Fantasy I. Now, to prove my point, I'll provide some images.

First, I'll provide the image of the Black Mage from FFI

http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy/Party/Black%20Mage.gif

Now let's look at the Black Mages from... FFV

Bartz
http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy5/Party/Bartz%20-%20Black%20Mage.gif

Reina
http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy5/Party/Reina%20-%20Black%20Mage.gif

Galuf
http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy5/Party/Galuf%20-%20Black%20Mage.gif

Faris
http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy5/Party/Faris%20-%20Black%20Mage.gif

Krile

Now, after looking around, I have decided that the gender of the black mage is female. Look at the male characters in FFV. As a Black Mage, each male character was shown wearing pants, and the female characters with just the robe. The black mage in FFI has no pants, and thus is female.

But what do I know? The black mage is probably male after all, but that may be wrong. What do you think? Male or female?

I bet all of you are going to say male. 8-)

If it is a female, then it must undergo a sex change after the upgrade. In either one(DoS or NES), it portrays him as a male. NES has him with his hat off, showing a masculan face, and DoS, shows him with pants, and males have pants like you sayz.

I'd say the Black Mages are an asexual species of their own, like in FFIX.

They couldn't show Lenna, Faris, and Klulu wearing pants as Black Mages, because it's backwards and wrong for women to do such things. Therefore, instead of giving them some weird Black Mage skirt, they simply went back to the old way of just giving them a big robe. It hardly means the robe-wearing Black Mages in any other game are female, though, especially since all the heroes in FFIII are stated as being boys and in FFI the Black Mage goes from no-pants to pants.

I say that they're just the reincarnation of evil, and therefore need no gender.

A reincarnation of evil can't be a Warrior of Light.

Maybe he was bribed.

Even if he wanted to, he wouldn't be allowed.

They're the Warriors of Light, not the Warriors of Good. Not necessarily the same thing.

The Black Mage could be either gender, really. I always thought BM was male and WM was female, though maybe that has something to do with how the 8-Bit Theater shows the two. However, if you press Auto-Select on the names in FF1 DoS, the game can come up with both male and female names for the Black Mage. As for other classes, I think White Mage had mostly female names, Thief and Red Mage had at least one female name (Daryl and Lola), and neither Warrior nor Monk had any female names.

Yeah, I think it's open to interpretation.

An argument formed on the basis of the clothing can't stand, anyway. Both Male and Female Black Mages wear pants in Final Fantasy: Tactics:

Linkage to the concept art of both Black Mage genders (http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/psx/fft/pictures/wizard.jpg).
Female Black Mage Sprite (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/Squall_of_Seed/FemaleBlackMageTactics.gif).
Male Black Mage Sprite (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/Squall_of_Seed/MaleBlackMageTactics.gif).

Besides, the Black Wizard (more powerful form of the Black Mage) in Final Fantasy I is obviously Male:

Obviously intended to be Male, then.

I guess then that if it has no long hair comming out of the bottom of the hat, we can assume it's male? And, I thought Daryl was a guy name. Anyway, since FF1, we have never really gotten a look at the face behind the cleverly-placed shadow.

There's alot of females who dress up as males. I would go for female even if it had beard.

Well, I can even tell beter. All the charachters in FF I are ment to be males. Look it up in the game guide you get with it. Even at the White Mage it says "he". So Black Mage is obviously male. And by the way, didn't anyone notice neither of the charachters says what, while normally women would talk the ears of your head, so they are male.

Yea, but Orco could float, so he must have been a red mage, or Rosa was helping him. Black Mage vs. Bone = Orco vs. Skeletor???

Black Mage is such a blatant rip-off of Orco, it's not even funny. And for all of the unenlightened, Orco is a mage character from He-man.

On topic, BM is clearly a male.
