View Full Version : The downside to being European

There are many advantages living in Europe, nice weather, not too hot not too cold, a area of the world where many cultures come together, football, no G.W.Bush, etc...

But there is one BIG downside...Eurovision...

Sweden votes for Denmark, and Norway and Finland, and what a surprise Spain voted for Portugal, and Portugal voted for Spain. Austria of course votes for Germany and Germany returns the favour, Greece and Turkey vote for Cyprus, while the Balkan countries vote for each other. Russia votes for the ex-Soviet states and they vote for Russia, Belgium votes for Holland, UK votes for Ireland. Oh and it's full of camp singers singing crap songs.

If you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about, don't worry...you're one of the lucky ones...

I do wonder why it's always pop-singers, why can't bands enter? Everyone loves Coldplay except me, let's send Coldplay or Radiohead or Muse or Feeder. We might at least get some votes for doing something different.

Good bands wouldn't sink as low as performing in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Even though it always sucks,
I always find it moderately interesting to see what the different countries send.

Like when Russia sent TaTu. They had a single out but they were 17 so they managed to get in. If they won they planned on performing naked. They came VERY close to first.

Ain't us Brits sending Jordan to be our representive for Eurovision.

*shudder*

Our entry last year was PAINFUL. We got no votes - seriously....it was....a shame.
I guess this year if Jordan goes, no-one will be paying any attention to her song.

Eurovision is funny.

Is Eurovision sort of like the American Idol stuff that we in the states have and mostly suffer through as well?

Take care all.

We did get votes man! Fame Academy's James Fox came 17th with a song I can't remember. it was painful though. BTW, Javine will be going to the Eurovision and hopefully she'll pop out of her skimpy dress on live T.V again. That was sweet.

First off, I'm pretty sure Pop Idol is a British concept and we have been suffering longer. Simon Fuller came up with the idea and American Idol is one of it's many spin offs.

Basically Eurovision has been around for about 40 years and it's a song contest where something like 20 countries make it to a final and then comes massively biased political voting from each country to decide the winner. The songs, with very few exceptions, are cheesey, crappy, poppy, poopy, experiments in shizzle. If you can catch it on some random American cable channel, you should, just for the experience.

Ah, so it's closer to American Bandstand, minus the band aspect?

"First off, I'm pretty sure Pop Idol is a British concept and we have been suffering longer. Simon Fuller came up with the idea and American Idol is one of it's many spin offs."

That makes sense. Just about every reality show that the USA has was 'borrowed' from Europe as well.

Thanks for the info good sir!

Take care all.

And Old Trafford is the closet thing to heaven on Earth (until Wembley is reopened).

Kinda ironic considering one of Manchester United's nicknames is "The Devils", eh?

I don't pay any attention to Eurovision, no decent songs or performers really spring to mind, and basically only found the countless excuses for Britain's "0 point" performance amusing.

Let's not turn this into a "England vs. Celtic Nations" war or anything like it, please. =P

On a sidenote, Pop Idol I believe was a British concept based on Pop Stars, which was something that was done in NZ and then Australia and then the UK. New Zealand had the worst result of a band, Aussie's wasn't much better and, as anyone would expect, the UK had actual decent singers and therefore it took off like a rocket.

Eurovision is something I have never really paid attention to. I think that the UK (or England, I don't know for sure) is sending Jordan over is kind of funny. Maybe they just wanted her out of the country for a little while.

I'm kinda embarrassed that I know this but.....actually, Javine will be representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. There was a competition held a while ago and Javine beat Jordan for the 'honour'.

There is the possibility of sending these bands over there!
but they have to WANT to do it.
And i mean, seriously, no band is gonna want to do that because there is always the possibility they might LOSE!! Inevitably to some act dressed in tin-foil or whatever. :D

The biggest downfalls of being European are;
1. Join the Euro or be Economically ignored
2. Being the first ones hit when Germany decides to Rock N Roll again
3. Tight Pants=Low Sperm Count
4. Eurovision Song Contest.
5. Having to wait to Last for Video Game/Movie releases
6. Having to smell the French when It's particularly windy
7. Drunk Union Jack-Wearing English Twats on holiday
8. No Taco Bell
9. The Weather & If you want to go to a European Destination That's Hot, See No. 7
10. Alan Titsmarsh & Charlie Dimmock & their European Clones

Of course, all that is bearable because we get to witness the greatest Football the world has to offer :D
