Japanese gamers who purchase the upcoming director's cut version of Shadow Hearts: Covenant will not only be privy to the tweaked version of the second Shadow Hearts, but will also receive a disk that contains a trailer for the next installment of Nautilus' Koudelka series, Shadow Hearts III. Along with this revelation, a feature in Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, has given the world more specific details than those that came along with the Shadow Hearts III trailer.

The game is set in the United States in 1929, and features Johnny Garland; a street-smart 16-year-old New Yorker with an attitude. Johnny is a self-proclaimed private investigator who "investigates" events in the back streets of New York City. More often than not, Johnny finds himself in over his head as a consequence of his investigations. One particular investigation leads to a grim end, with Johnny's father and older sister passing away, and Johnny losing his memory of what transpired.

After being asked to track down a suspect by a suspicious-looking man, Johnny agrees thinking that it would be an easy-money job. He finds the suspect quickly--almost too quickly--when something goes wrong. A greenish glow envelopes the area, and a monster comes out of nowhere and devours the suspect. The monster stares Johnny down as if he were going to be next, when something vaguely human with two enormous wings falls between the two.

The green glow that Johnny witnessed turns out to be a portal to another plane called a "window." These windows have been appearing all over the United States, and are usually accompanied by a ravening monster. Shadow Hearts III will follow Johnny as he travels all across the new world, taking on these monsters.

Similar to its predecessors before it, Shadow Hearts III will feature a cast of unique and unusual traveling companions. As of yet however, the only character announced besides Johnny is Shania, a 21 year old native American. Shania uses Shaman-like powers and makes a living as a hunter of the beasts that have come through windows.

Needless to say, the Judgment Ring system will make a return for the latest incarnation of Shadow Hearts, and familiar customization and combo systems concerning the ring will be present. Furthermore, the Emigre manuscript, a focal point of all three previous Koudelka titles, will make a return. Game locations will once again be based on locales in the real world, including Brooklyn, Chicago, and the Grand Canyon.

Presently, Shadow Hearts III is 60% complete and is scheduled for a Japanese release in the summer. A North American localization has not yet been mentioned. I figured I'd post this for any of you Shadow Hearts fans. If you've played both of the Shadow Hearts games I'm sure you can't wait for this one. Too bad it doesn't have Yuri Hyuga anymore though. I'll miss him. :(

Covenant came out yesterday in Australia and I love it so far :D

Have the first one as well and it was great.

This could be Yuri as whatever demon he is in the opening CG of Covenant. You never know. I hope that they do have him in the game at least as a cameo appearance. Also they do need a harmonixer since in my opinion it wouldn't be Shadow Hearts without one in the game. Since the only harmonixers that I know of are in Yuri's bloodline we could get either Yuri or Kurando in that game. It's only set 14 years after Covenant so it's not unreasonable.

Here are the scans from Famitsu or something like that

Also here is the trailer for it that came on the Directors Cut of SH:C (thanks to Maskrider on the Gamefaqs board for this)

If that doesn't work you can also get it from here

On a slightly unrelated note for some reason I can't get www.rpgamer.com to work on my computer anymore. I used to visit it every day until I found that I couldn't access it. Any ideas on how this could be fixed?

The demon at the opening of Covenant was Amon, I believe. And yes, they do need a harmonixer. It's still not going to be the same without Yuri, Karin, or Alice though. I wonder how it will go over.
Mabye that Jhonny guy will turn out to be one, or something.

It's disappointing that Yuri's not in it, but oh well, nothing we can do about it. I seriously hope they don't make Johnny annoying like most young characters in other games, ya know?

Does anyone know which ending in Shadow Hearts Covenant this one takes place after? I need to know what "officially" happened to Yuri.

A lot of people on the Gamefaqs board think that it may be Shania because of what was in the trailer. They think that she jumped off the building because she was going to transform into a winged creature. We'll see though as to how it turns out.

More than likely it is based on the ending where he loses his memory. It would be the most reasonable ending to start the third game from.

Why does everyone like shadow hearts so much.I personaly hate it.Its frustrating and boring and its made by Midway which describes the game all by its self.Bring on more Alundra and Dark Cloud sequels and less Shadow Hearts and Grandia games :)

It's not made by Midway. It's published by Midway and made by Nautilus in Japan -

The second two Grandia's never were as good as the first. Never could be.

I Don't think it will ever be the same without Yuri. Is the trailer really any good? I've yet to watch it. Have to wait untill my parents aren't here, so they won't be bothered by it.
