Ok, I was listening to the radio (<3 @ Classic Rock) and they were doing something during lunch with the listeners calling to vote on what a band's signature song is, and played the signature song of a band. They did several bands, and some of them I could agree with.

Anyway, the point of this thread is to name a song that a band/singer is well known for, and that's basically would be their signature song. Here are several bands' signature songs as voted by the listeners of the radio station.

Eric Clapton, Layla
Police, Roxanne
Led Zepplin, Stairway To Heaven
John Mellencamp, Jack And Diane
Eagles, Hotel California
Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody
Rolling Stones, Satisfaction
The Who, Who Are You
U2, Pride In The Name Of Love
Aerosmith, Dream On
Elton John, Tiny Dancer
Tom Petty, Refugee
Van Halen, Runnin' With The Devil
Lynyrd Skynard, Freebird
Pink Floyd, Another Brick In The Wall
CCR, Fortunate Son
Bruce Springsteen, Born To Run
Beatles, Hey Jude

Seems pretty easy to do. You may want to give some of the bands listed with a different song which you would consider their signature song, or you can list a different band or singer with their signature song of your choice. Get going. *whips*

I've addedmy comments in brackets.

Eric Clapton - Layla (agreed - but admittedly he didn't even play the main riff - Duane Allman did)
Police - Roxanne (yup)
Led Zepplin - Stairway To Heaven (probably a grudging yes, but it really should be 'A Whole Lotta Love')
John Mellencamp - Jack And Diane (deffo)
Eagles - Hotel California (deffo)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (deffo)
Rolling Stones - Satisfaction (toss-up between that and Jumpin' Jack Flash)
The Who - Who Are You (WRONG - My Generation, blatantly)
U2 - Pride In The Name Of Love (Yep)
Aerosmith - Dream On (nah, Sweet Emotion)
Elton John - Tiny Dancer (dunno, don't really care)
Tom Petty - Refugee (nah, Free Fallin')
Van Halen, Runnin' With The Devil (nah, Eruption or Jump)
Lynyrd Skynard - Freebird (that's a contentious one. The true rednecks would agree, but Sweet Home Alabama is the much more recognisable song)
Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (probably)
CCR - Fortunate Son (who?)
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (probably)
Beatles - Hey Jude (probably, but by no means their best song - but the Beatles were pretty average by my books)

I agree with a lot of them, but Clapton I think more people would associate with Cocaine before Layla, as it's solidly recognizable. It took me a couple of listens to catch on to the fact that it WAS Clapton. As for others I disagree with, definitely U2. I think of Mysterious Ways from Achtung, Baby when I think of U2, but I could be crazy. Or Sunday, Bloody Sunday. With the Eagles, I think Life in the Fast Lane is more their signature song. And for the Stones, when I think of them I think Brown Sugar, but I'm also weird.

Oh, and as much as I wish, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are more easily recognized by Free Fallin', though Refugee is a MUCH MUCH better song. However, I totally agree with the rest of them.

I'd say Under The Bridge for RHCP.
Aerosmith... Walk This Way.
John Mellencamp. Pink Houses.
Tom Petty... hmm. Running Down a Dream.
Van Halen. Gotta be Jump.
I don't care about Green Day, and neither should you.
I'm tempted to say November Rain for Guns and Roses, but I'll agree with Spiff on this one.
Pearl Jam... even though it isn't their best song, it's gotta be Jeremy.
ZZ Top... she's got Legs, she knows how to use them.

Anyway, for some others...

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Boston - More Than a Feeling
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Collective Soul - Shine
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) the Reaper
Foreigner - Cold as Ice
Loverboy - Working for the Weekend
Bad Company - Bad Company

Queensr˙che - Silent Lucidity
Styx - Renegade
Yes - Roundabout
Supertramp - Take the Long Way Home

With Clapton, I think it depends on the era the listener has focused in on. Alot of people would certainly deem "Wonderful Tonight" or "Tears in Heaven" as prime candidates for his signature song, but I'd agree with Layla.
I'd say U2 would be better fitted with "One" or "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".
For the Eagles, "Lyin' Eyes" wouldn't be scoffed at, but Hotel California is pretty much it. For Elton John I'd probably hazard "Sacrifice".

As for others...
RHCP's - Under the Bridge
Guns n Roses - Sweet Child
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Radiohead - Paranoid Andrioid
Green Day - Basket Case
The Kinks - You Really Got Me
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Oasis - Wonderwall
Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies
David Bowie - Heroes
Dire Straits - Walk of Life
Duran Duran - Rio

Hoobastank - The Reason

I would think that Crawling In The Dark would be it and Running Away

Sugar Cult - Bouncing Off The Walls

that's what I couldn't remember

Incubus - Pardon Me

Incubus: Drive, Megalomaniac

Flamethrower
03-13-2005, 03:37 AM
Crawling In The Dark is a much better song, but The Reason is much more well known. The Reason is what made Hoobastank popular and known to all, so that's why I think that's their signature song.

Dking'squeen
03-13-2005, 03:51 AM
Before that, Crawling In The Dark was about as well known as The Reason is now, and Running Away was in a popular game, that's why I named them, but yeah, The Reason would be it...

Oh, yes, can't forget about INXS. Their signature song is Need You Tonight.

I don't think Radiohead has a definable song, since they vary so much. If you look at only their early alternative stuff, then Creep does it if you're American, Street Spirit does it if you're English.

Led Zeppelin couldn't go by Stairway to Heaven - I think it's their best song, but it's so markedly different from the other things they've done. I'd have to go with Dazed and Confused, or Whole Lotta Love.

I'm not sure about Coldplay being defined or having Amsterdam as a signature - In My Place and Yellow are far more recognizable than those.

Queen is tough - I'd agree with Bohemian Rhapsody, but what about We Will Rock You? Is Bohemian really more known? I have no idea. Bohemian is more similar to their other stuff, I guess.

Agree that Pearl Jam's signature is Jeremy.
Agree that the Stones' signature is I Can't Get No Satisfaction.
Agree that the Beatles' signature is Hey Jude.
Agree that Eric Clapton's signature is Layla.
Agree that Oasis's signature is Wonderwall.

No one's done Third Eye Blind, so I'll have to go with Semi-Charmed Life. Not my favorite, but this isn't about favorites, now is it.

No one's done Jet either, so I'll point out the obvious: Are You Gonna Be My Girl.

Too much more stuff to talk about, even though I'm bored and I probably have the time.

edit: Of course; Afro Man - Cuz I Got High.

Hmmm, what about Oh So Quiet? As mcuh as she doesn't like it, everybody knows she did it.

Pearl Jam- Jeremy
The Smashing Pumpkins- Today
Pixies- Where Is My Mind?

Green Day - Basket Case or Good Riddance. Can't decide
Sadly it would probably be Bouelvard Of Broken Dreams simply cause thats all people know them for right now.

For Greenday I'd say Good Riddance (The time of your life). Blink 182 - All the Small Things. (I still love that song though <3). I'd agree Red Hot Chili Peppers probably Under the Bridge whoever said that. I'm too lazy to make a list.

It's Another Brick in the Wall Pt.2. Someone who isn't interested in Pink Floyd wouldn't have heard Parts 1 and 3. You might also want to add The Happiest Days Of Our Lives since it accompanies Part 2.

Once you hear it so often, and you see so many other people here it and like it, the song loses a lot of luster.

Plus, I don't think it'll ever have the luster than Good Riddance had/has.

I still like the other songs on the American Idiot album more like Wake Me Up When September Ends and Jesus of Suburbia. BoBD is played WAY too much. And it's still the #1 song on iTunes for like, 4 straight months.

Funny I remember my cousins playing that song over and over again the first Christmas when it was out

ABBA - Dancing Queen
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Sonny & Cher - I've got you babe
Frank Sinatra - New York, New York
Britney Spears - Baby one more time
Utada Hikaru - First Love ;)

Jay-Z: Hard Knock Life
Outkast: Ms Jackson
Bone Thugs n' Harmony: Crossroads
Tupac: Califnornia Love
Eminem: Lose Yourself
U2: Where The Streets Have No Name
Bonnie McKee: Somebody
Toby Lightman: Devils And Angels
Five For Fighting: Superman
Puff Daddy: I'll Be Missing You
Wayne Wonder: Bounce Along
Mariah Carey: Butterfly/All I Want For Christmas Is You
50 Cent: In Da Club
Alicia Keys: Fallin'
Evanescence: Bring Me To Life
K-Ci and Jojo: All My Life
Usher: You Make Me Wanna
Akon: Locked Up/Lonely
Maroon 5: She Will Be Loved
Alanis Morissette: You Oughta Know
Santana: Smooth/Maria Maria
Destiny's Child: Survivor
Sisqo: Thong Song
Christina Aguilera: Geanie In A Bottle
Will Smith: Gettin' Jiggy Wit It
Next: Too Close
Nelly Furtado: Turn Off The Light
Nelly: Hot In Herre
Vanessa Carlton: A Thousand Miles
Michelle Branch: Breathe
Kylie Minogue: The Loco-Motion
Notorious B.I.G.: Mo Money, Mo Problems

I was tempted to say No Letting Go for Wayne Wonder, but eh. I don't think This Love is M5's signature song, because SWBL was played on the radio long before that gave them the recognition. A few of the songs are covers of older popular songs, but the songs the artists sung made them who they were IMO.

That's all I can think of for R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap artists along with a few other bands.

I saw a Nine Inch Nails song mentioned, and it was Head Like A Hole. While I agree that has massive airplay, I still think their signature song is...

"Closer", which everyone stupidly calls "**** you like an animal."

"U2: Where The Streets Have No Name"

I definitely agree with this one because this was the song that was played when U2 performed at the Super Bowl in 2002, which if my memory is correct, was the most watched Super Bowl to date and thus, almost by default, was the song most people were exposed to.

Take care all.

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!
I'm a major Nine Inch Nails fan, er, Trent Reznor fan. And no one seems to get the point that it isn't called 'I wanna ***k you like an animal!'
That depresses me.
But unfortuneately, in other countries, NIN's signature song is still 'Head Like a Hole'. 'Closer' has been screened. :skull4:

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about that. I think the UK knows NIN for "Head Like A Hole" more than Closer. I would prefer it if people were into Head Like A Hole because everyone doesn't get what Closer is really about, anyway.

Yeah, whenever I talk about NIN, and no one knows who I am talking about, I say that they have probably heard their biggest hit on the radio, "Closer". They always say, "Well, I never heard of that," and I sigh while saying the **** you like an animal lyrics. "OHHHH I KNOW THAT SONG!!!!11111ONE"

Very annoying.

NIN - Probably Closer.... Maybe "We're in this together now"?
Tool - Schism, maybe Lateralus, although that's less known.
Muse - New Born
ACDC - Shook Me All Night Long
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
Beck - Loser (ironically)
Blink 182 - All the small things, or Adam's Song
Blur - Song 2 (maybe Girls and Boys)
Bob Dylan - ... this one's hard! Everybody must get stoned?
Bush - Glycerine
Coheed and Cambria - Delirium Trigger
Coldplay - Yellow
Three Dog Night - Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Dandy Warhols - Bohemian like you
The Doors - Hello, I love you
Disturbed - Down with the sickness
Doobie Brothers - Oh what a night
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Lou Reed - Walk on the wild side
Manic Street Preachers - If you tolerate this (maybe? I can't decide)
Marylin Manson - Disposible Teens (this is hard)
Massive Attack - Tear drop
Prozzak - Sucks to be you
Radiohead - The Bends (yes, creep is better know, but it's just SO not like them I can't call it their "signature" song. My brain won't let me say creep.)
Silverchair - Abuse me

Arrrrggghhh, a band's latest overplayed to death singles are NOT their best known songs x 100 million.

Also your favourite songs are not signature songs. Which is probably hypocritical of me to say.

I would disagree with you, Emerald, about the Doors. I know I've heard Break on Through way more often in film, television and on the radio. And when I think of the Doors, that's the song I think of (and while it's almost my favorite, I can safely say it's not, which erases bias; my favorite is Riders on the Storm :D)

And I think Bob Dylan's signature song would be Like a Rolling Stone. But that's just me.

1979?
Disarm?
Today?
Bullet With Butterfly Wings?

Well, it could be any of them, but I'd go with Today.
