Why Cerberus, it is a three headed dog guarding Hades. This must have a pretty screwed up story line. Dirge is a slow, mournful musical composition....

A funeral hymn of a Hellhound.

Perhaps Cerberus is back as an Aeon/GF/or whatever, and winds up being destroyed in the final battle.......

Or maybe this time you have to destroy him forever.........

I dunno, beats the hell outta me.

They probably just looked up some cool words and made it the name of the game.

Actually, I heard that "Dirge of Cerberus" is the name of something that is actually in the game. (Or maybe something in the game is called just "Cerberus" (not refering to the hellhound), but regardless, I think the name actually relates to something in the game.)

The Dirge of Cerberus was Vincents nickname before the game was officially announced (I believe I may be mistaken) I don’t remember where I originally heard this. Cerberus they were comparing Vincents inter rage and turmoil to that of a vicious hellhound and Dirge is representing his sorrow and his own personal self loathing

I heard that it was the name of the 'evil organization' in the game

"The details that are known about Square-Enix's newest title are few, but the game begins as a mysterious group known as "DG" attack a peaceful town leaving Vincent no choice but to fight back."

Unless the D stands for Dirge... but then what does the G stand for?

And I wouldnt read too much into it anyway. Square likes random words. No really.

Where did you get that info? I heard the group was actually called Dirge of Cerberus, or Cerberus, or something like that. So the Dirge part could be foreshadowing the fact that they will come to an end in the game.

It doesn't really matter to me either way, I'm just speculating.

That information came straight from Square. Check out the news on EoFF's DoC page.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I haven't read any info on DoC in a long time, so what I've heard is quite sketchy.

maybe it's just a subtitle do describe teh psudo-gothic tone of the game. I mean, Vincent is pretty dark.

Actually, DG stands for Deep Ground Soldiers, not Dirge of Cerberus.

this is way off, but maybe vincent's fun is named cerberus. 3 headed demon dog=3 barrel gun. and the dirge could just represent the pain it inflicts on enemies. maybe?just another one of my theories. lol

I don't think it's his gun. The logo has the Cerberus in it, and in this pic: http://www.ff7-doc.com/images/scans/05.jpg Vinny is standing on the skeleton of a Cerberus.

Dirge has three definitions: 1. "a slow, mournful musical composition", often played at funerals. 2. "a mournful or elegiac poem or other literary work". 3. what the Roman Catholic Church calls The Office of the Dead.
Then Cerberus is obviously the three headed dog that guards Hades. Another word used for Cerberus is Hellhound, which is a devilish person, or a fiend.
Translated Dirge of Cerberus sorta' means Death of Fiend
Vincent is somewhat... well a deamon/fiend. So maybe at some point in the game he dies.. that or it's his gun. This website has more info on the name: http://www.ff7-doc.com/theories.php
