Okay, I was just browsing around and spotted a "Who's the hottest character?" thread in the FFVIII forum and I think it's hilarious that us girls have no problem talking about both guys and girls that we think are "hot," but guys are the opposite. If you ask a guy what they think of another guy, JUST ABOUT HIS CHARACTER, NOT HIS LOOKS, they'll say something like, "I don't know, I'm not gay!" Just something to think about...

Girls are more comfortable identifying other girl's hotness. As for guys, most are uncomfortable with that. I mean, look at me. I don't really care, but I can say which guy is hot, or not. xD But I really don't do it very often. I just avoid the subject altogether.

If a guy freaks out when you ask him a question like that, he's obviously not comfortable with his sexuality. If he was, he wouldn't have to stuggle to prove the face that he's straight.

It isn't about being comfortable with my manhood or my sexuality.

The fact is simply that it isn't a guy thing to do.

Girls like to make each other pretty. They like to play dress up, and they like to play house, and they wear acrylics and shop together and compliment each other on dresses etc.
They're also far more competitive for men, and have an inner desire to ridicule and ostracize ewach other. So they must understand fashion, and they must be able to criticize dress and hotness etc.

Men don't have this problem. Generally, we work in sweaty, filthy environments. We only look nice when girls are dressing us. We don't care what we all look like because the girls are too busy competing over us these days for us to be concerned. (We'll just take whichever girl hurls herself at us, and then the next and the next. Whatever.)
Frankly, we have nothing to do with how good looking we are.

Then, when you ask me if one guy is better looking than the other, I'm forced to look and say... Say what? Heck, I don't know!
I mean, if the dude doesn't have zits, is dressed up, has white teeth, and doesn't have bald spots, then I'm really at a loss to determine anything about how good looking he is.
I'll say that I don't know. On a forum, I won't respond. It isn't my business to know. Even if I really needed to figure it out, my guess would be totally wild, or else entirtely innacurate.
I mean, get off my case.
I don't know. I sure as heck don't care. And I think that I can speak for most men when I say that I really have better things to do with my time than look at guys to determine which one is better looking. (And that's even if I knew how to make such a daring assumption)

As far as girl hotness... Well, that's the other side. We'll all compliment and criticize girls. But we're still mostly primal and immature about it. Plaster yourself with make-up! Wear the hippest, most in-style stuff! Do your hair! Get on those tight jeans! Wear your pink high heels! I'll be busy judging your breast size against faceless chick # 3, 4, and 5 over there.

Oh he can speak for me better than I can myself.

I really don't see why people link being comfortable with your sexuality to doing homosexual stuff like talk about whether or not other men are hot. Is there any scientific reasoning behind that? Or are you people just deciding that because we refuse to take part in something that most people would deem gay, we are unsure of our own sexuality?

I don't judge other guys' looks, not because I'm straight ... ok partly because I'm straight ... but because as Martyr said, it's a waste of time.

But seriously, do I feel I can tell if a guy's attractive? Yes I do, just like I feel I can tell that a women's attractive. And I would be comfortable talking about it. The key difference is, though. Do I actually find myself being attracted to guys that I think are attractive. Nope. Well, 99% of the time anyway! ;)

Im a firm believer in the whole personality over looks....the look thing is a bonus imo...the girls that i have gone out with over the years arent exactly lookers but i have a good night out with em' its not exactly awkward...as for someone asking me if a guy was hot i usually just say "go up and go for it"....usually they're just too shy to talk....its kinda funny cause even if you approve of someones "hotness" guy or girl another issue rises up and thats going up and talking to them lol...

sometimes i dont have a problem going up and talking to a girl but usually i have a mindset on them being out of my league....kinda sad really (for me that is) lol!

I don't see what's so offensive about what Yuzuki said, so if someone could fill me in...

Anyway, I think it's because society accepts female homosexuality more than male homosexuality. :} You go up to most guys and they'll say "Yeah, lesbians are hot." You go up to a lot of girls, and they'll say that they are willing to kiss another girl just to experiment, regardless of whether they are straight. The same doesn't apply to guys ^^

Also, what Matyr said may apply to a lot of guys, but those aren't the kind I go for ;) And there are a hell of a lot of guys who aren't like that.

perhaps on a general (mass) level what was said is true.

However, a mass is more like an entity. It's theoretical but it doesn't exist. People are too different from one another...

so you'll have guys who talk about how hot other guys are with no problem... and you'll have girls who don't even bother replying to a "who's hot thread" because it seems like an utterly rediculous waste of time.

It's not hard to admit a guy is good looking. "Hey, he's a pretty good lookin' guy." Saying that doesn't make me any less masculine.

However, I still avoid the subject. I don't want to compare how guys look because honestly I couldn't care less. It's not important to me. Sure, I'll compare some females but that's because I'm actually, y'know, attracted to females.

I'm comfortable with my sexuality, which is why I joke about it. That doesn't mean that I'm going to go around comparing males.

Except for my friend Hans. Hans has so much raw manliness that his raw sex appeal transcends gender preference. I mean, seriously, his name alone has to be the hottest thing ever. Hans! You can shout it Die Hard style to greet him (which I always do) and it just makes you go weak in the knees.

I've found that I just don't know what an attractive guy looks like. I can use the generalizations and then go from there (Brad Pitt or one of the Backstreet boys or whatever), but they're varied so I don't know. I seem to have noticed that a lot of girls seem to like effeminate guys, maybe that's the standard we should look at. If a guy looks like a girl, he's by definition attractive :D

I always ask my guy friends what they think about guys in magazines and on TV and they always say something like, "he's alright I guess" and other vague noncommittal answers.

While I accept that guys won't talk openly about the attractiveness of other guys, do they at least think it? I find it hard to believe that they can look at a someone like Brad Pitt and think absolutely nothing about his physical beauty. I mean, good looking people are good looking people right? So how can a guy look at another guy and not even do a little bit of evaluating?

Meh, it's just outside my realm of understanding I suppose.

That is because you are looking at it from a girl's point of view of having to criticize and evaluate everyone and everything. I do not look at some one and immediately think whether or not he is hot. If a girl asks me to, I try to see a guy from a girl's perspective, but I don't usually do so otherwise.

I don't criticize. :)

When I see a girl with beautiful eyes, I think "hey that girl has beautiful eyes." And I think that's perfectly normal.

I can look at an elderly woman in the park and think, "my god, she's gorgeous" because I don't equate appreciating someone's beauty with wanting to "hook up."

I think human beings in general are beautiful. Scars, lumps, bumps and all. So I appreciate the beauty in both men and women, old and young.

I'm betting that once you guys have sons, you'll notice how strong his jawline is and how lovely his eyes are. My Dad randomly tells my brother that he's beautiful. So yeah, I do think it's a bit odd that some guys can't appreciate the beauty in other guys.

Oh I really don't see why people link being comfortable with your sexuality to doing homosexual stuff like talk about whether or not other men are hot.
Attractive, not hot. And it's not so much if a straight guy does this activity, it's if he would do this activity. It's more willingness, like if a guy is not even remotely willing to say that another guy is attractive or not. I mean, no one is asking if you want to have wildy monkey sex with Brad Pitt, they are merely asking what you think of his looks. I mean, Brad Pitt has good hair, a great smile, a nice jawline, nice eyes, and a swimmer's body, he's an attractive guy. For a male to note that about another male does not imply anything. And if you can't even make a comment on the subject, well.....

I comment on guys' looks all the time. Oh wait..... :D
In fairness to the theory of the subject, I do comment on how girls look as well. Not as often though because it's not what I usually look at, but I would if the comment were appropriate.
