It just occured to me that a large majority of the sprites in the classic FFs actually dont bother to keep their eyes on the prize (i.e. the monsters). they sorta peep at you through the screen. More often than not they're the mages classes. That might account for the fact that they get hit more often, mainly because they're not paying attention.

If that was the case then it means meelers are looking slightly off to the right. Plus the formation of monsters would be in a strange kinda diagonal shape of sorts.

They obviously star off into space because they have to try to concentrate on something besides the monsters in order to cast their spells. *nods*

I noticed that also young Rydia's sprite from FF4 looks towards the player. In that case, though, it's more like she's saying "I don't know what to do! And netiher this dark knight man does! Maybe YOU can help me!"
