Actually, I'd have to say this was 100x worse than Linus and his suicide note, depending upon how much of this bull was put on.
Actually the whole redirecting every forum to the front page was kinda blah. I don't see why you guys liked it so much. It was pretty much last minute.

Good job, everyone. 'Twas thoroughly entertaining, if a little offensive. ;)

But hmm...right after Kishi was "banned" I asked in some (now mysteriously deleted) thread here whether or not it was an April Fools joke and Leeza said it wasn't! *never trusts Leeza again* I totally fell for it after the Important News thread, but after you got rid of Feedback I did suspect and said so in my LJ

It was pretty much last minute.Yeah, that was a pain in the butt after the first five mintues. I ended up having to use email notifications and the "latest posts/threads" pages to navigate threads.

I *have* to know, was Raistlin in on it? Cause if not, hahahahaha.
Go to fucking hell. :mad2:
The joke's on me this time, fellas. I guess I should've followed my instincts. I originally thought the Kishi thing was a joke(ask BoB - I even made a locked LJ entry, thinking it was a joke but not wanting to be wrong), and what the fuck do you know, that's what it turns out to be. :rolleyes2
I wondered how D could manage the same warning message in two different threads, unless he copy/pasted from a deleted thread; I also wondered why it sounded so out-of-character for him. I wondered why it took Kishi so long to scan the picture "again." I wondered why BoB tried to find every excuse in the book to keep Kishi unbanned besides "the image wasn't bad enough." I wondered why Yams changed his mind half-way through concerning the "banning". At that point, I thought it was a joke, but then allowed myself to get carried away. Probably because Shlup posted in my LJ 4389574397534975834 times, and why the FUCK would you do that if it was just a joke? :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:
Right, that's the stunned silence over with. And I was stunned. For a full minute I didn't move, I didn't speak, I barely breathed. Some people had considered the possibility that it might be an April Fools gag, although I didn't agree with them. I reasoned that the staff wouldn't pull something this big, and boy was I wrong. It was big. It was elaborate, brilliantly planned, and brilliantly executed. It was the single most complex April Fools joke I've ever seen, and congratulations to you all for pulling it off so well.
Having said that, while the whole 'Kishi scandal' didn't anger me, this bloody well did. I'd like to think that I can take a joke, but this one came very near to crossing the line for me. The feedback forum was in chaos, it didn't take long before General Chat was too. As far as we could tell, Eyes on Final Fantasy was falling apart, and cleverly orchestrated or not, seeing that sort of thing happen is not at all nice. I think you underestimated just how much people care about this place. We're not exaggerating when we say we love this place, and our friends at EoFF are as much our friends as those we play sports or go to the movies with, perhaps even more so. We're as attached to this board as you are, and seeing it seemingly collapse before our eyes was an emotional experience.
The way I saw it, EoFF at the height of the 'crisis' just wasn't worth it any more. I came so bloody close to turning my back on this place for good at one point, and looking at the state of the boards at that time I doubt I would have even considered returning. Only the smallest speck of enjoyment that remained in the place kept me from doing just that, and convinced me that things would be all right in the end. While the board may have crumbled, I told myself that as long as the people were there it would still be EoFF. The friends I made over the years kept my faith in this forum, and it's thanks to them that I stuck it out.
And I'm glad that I did, because cruel though the prank was, it's exactly the kind of thing I love about EoFF. Seeing people put in so much time and effort just for a laugh is what makes our forums so enjoyable. Events like the Ciddies, Anniversary celebrations and others always throw up some classic moments, but this caught us completely by surprise, and has surpassed anything we've seen before. If we can still be doing stuff like this after five years then all the low points are worth it, because the highs of being an EoFF member are so magnificent.
Now that the Great April Fools Prank of 2005 is over, I'm relieved to see that it has all been one big joke. I thought Eyes on Final Fantasy was dead, but now I see that it's as strong as it ever was. After all, only such a thriving community could have staff committed enough to pull off such scheme, and members dedicated enough to react in the way they did. For masterminding this great deed, and for standing up for your beliefs so valiantly, you all deserve a huge pat on the back. You played us all for fools, and in doing so you gave us an Eyeson moment that will never be forgotten. Congratulations, and thank you.
Now never, ever do it again. :p

What I'm hitting myself over is D's edit in Kishi's thread. It was so out-of-character, I immediately thought it was a joke(I even thought that Kishi had made the edit himself in D's name). Kishi deleted the thread, made a new one. D used the exact same edit message. I wondered why and how, but I never thought to look into it. That was the biggest tip-off for me.

Everything the staff did was out of character for the past few weeks. :p
Del calling D a coward, yeah wasn't buying that. Big D getting all uppity but then turning around and making Shlup her birthday thread, that was just weird. And BoB being so nonchanlant about the whole thing while m4tt was spewing acid. :spin:
I've been deprived of Lost for nearly a month. I had to turn my attention elsewhere. And EoFF did just the trick. *pets*

But were you giggling?
So did Kishi post pr0n or not?
Kirobaito
04-01-2005, 11:50 PM
He did, but it was all intentional. All staged. We've all been taken for fools.
I was hoping matt was stepping down. :p Sorry man.
I was pretty certain Kishi never posted porn. After asking for evidence, I concluded there must be none. I was also really shocked by how out of character staff turned into. I just didn't make the final connection. So, as much as I would like to say "You didn't get me!" Yeah, you guys did. Good work, and well orchestrated. That was really something.
I think it would be even more funny if foa and eest got de-CKed. :D
I was really hoping this would bring about a little bit of change around here, but despite it all being a joke, I think we can all learn a little about this joke today.
It is NOT okay to post porn.
Anyways, I have a real AFJ to pull off now that is about the same magnitude as this one IRL, so I'll take confidence from how successful this one was.

I'm not surprised that this week-long endeavor was actually an elaborate hoax, because it really wasn't that elaborate. Clues all over the place, including the plot twists thread and one giant tipoff in another thread where someone stated that they were glad that Lord Krang was no longer a Knight, and what was Krang's reply but "I'll make a note of that."
What I am surprised at is the maliciousness of it all. Who could really appreciate this humor besides the people involved? Early on, I realized that it was a hoax, but other members may not have been so quick to the punch. Were they just outcasted in their arguments for the sake of the staff's giggles? I do not approve. =\

'Kay that look into how you guys concocted the April Fool's joke is actually a bit terrifying. Kinda like looking into the mind of a serial killer.

There's a heck of a lot of censored stuff in that thread. You're not already planning next year's prank, are you? :D
Loony BoB
04-02-2005, 12:27 PM
I don't think we'll ever be able to pull off something like this again.
Also, I'd estimate that at least 75% of the stuff we censored - possibly closer to 90% for all I know - would be quotes from PMs, chat sessions or LiveJournal entries/comments.

04-02-2005, 12:35 PM
Wait, why is the stuff censored anyway? Did I miss something?
So how hard were you laughing at me in that feedback thread Shlup? -____-
I can't deny that was pulled off damn well.
Loony BoB

Wait, why is the stuff censored anyway? Did I miss something?
1) Things were quoted from PMs, chat sessions, LJ entries and the like that we haven't gained authorisation to quote. I got permission from Raist and Raf to quote the chat sessions involving them after everything was over. We can't quote messages that were sent to staffers in private, that'd be rude.
2) We were talking about confidential staff matters.
3) Some of the stuff might have offended certain members. :p
Thought that much would have been obvious. :p Oh, and then there's the odd hentai picture that was posted while we were trying to figure out what to say Kishi posted.

But you all did such a good job of playing someone else. :) I'm just glad actually that I had to be away for most of that week because I'm not a very good actor. :)
Yep, personal reasons would probably be my only reason for ever leaving Staff. I wouldn't leave because of something like this and I also would not ever announce publicly like that that I was leaving.
It was fun, but I am glad that it's finally over and I would like to apologize to anyone who was genuinely upset by this.

The most obvious clue of them all was at the very beginning. Only one person, one person, bothered to ask WHY kishi would make a thread with a hentai image in it in the FFVII Forum, if he didn't want to get banned. It doesn't make any sense! That was one of the best parts.

But to everyone who felt this went a little too far... you're probably right.
When we decided to pull an April Fool's prank, we knew it had to be something bigger and deeper than ever before, otherwise everyone would know it was fake immediately. "Kishi posts porn and gets banned" is just too obvious. But when we added our carefully orchestrated arguments, grudges and public rages, it all seemed much more plausible.
If anything, the event and the reactions to it have been very useful as a learning tool. We've heard people's ideas on what makes a good forum and a good staff, on how the rules should be adminstered and enforced, and how 'open' staff decisions should be.
As for all this talk of "it looked like EoFF was falling apart!", I think that's a slight exaggeration. A few staff members disagreed on a few issues, and our disagreements went public. It just got inflated into a colossal drama, but at no point did it even appear to threaten EoFF's future. This was still the same old place, just with a few less people in charge.
I'm kind of entertained about how it all went:
*I 'speak out' and become a hero/martyr for standing up against injustice
*Shlup is the evil biatch for being so mean
*I get labelled cowardly and irresponsible for speaking out because it caused so much drama
*Shlup is still called an evil biatch even though it's all my fault:p
It was interesting to watch how members' attitudes toward different staffers changed over time.

I just read all 35 pages of the planning thread. I suppose that means I have far too much time on my hands. ^^;;;
I kind of fell for it -- I know I definitely felt upset about how things were shaping up. I think I was mostly ticked that threads with ... interesting feedback were getting closed right and left. (Although... that forum was getting quite spammy... I totally fell for it being closed legitimately.)
However, I'm still kinda new, and I don't know everyone/actions as well as a lot of members. And I was offline for most of the first, being addicted to my PSX.
But all and all, it's a well-planned out trick. Such a shame I hate April Fool's with a passion.

In the end though Dave, had this been real, I think you'd have actually done a true service for trying to expose a situation that needed to be addressed, not kept in the shadows.

I dunno why my crash thread is in the archive but that's fine *yay* XD I woulda done it anyway.
My attitude didn't change at all, until I was told that Yams and RSL kept switching sides every-other hour or so. :p
What? I changed sides exactly once and I at least had a semi-plausible reason for it. The problem was that everyone kept posting in public that there was fierce debate going on in the staff forum about whether Kishi should be unbanned or not and when asked by you I could only come up with Shlup vs. everyone else. That was already a huge contradiction that I was very worried about.
But yeah, there were surely plenty of hints and screw ups on our parts. By the end when a few people obviously had it figured out, I didn't really care. I was pulling my hair out hoping that this would end. And now that it has, I'm much happier.

That would be some trick.
One can't help but admire the brilliant execution, but I think the real value of the staff's joke is on a deeper level: in short, their success depended upon their failure. You just don't get such grand absurdities when a toaster rapes Abraham Lincoln, to use the vernacular.
On the other hand, I don't think any April Fool's joke could top the Pope's.
