The Team

Cloud Strife
Knight-style; overall element: wind, general color: blue
At Age 21, Cloud Strife leads the life of a mercenary for hire. As an ex-member of ShinRa’s elite "Soldier," his fighting skills are in high demand. Cloud joins the rebel group Avalanche for their first strike against Shinra.
This story primarily revolves around Cloud. In fact, he plays a key role in most of the events.
Barret Wallace
Defender equivalent; overall element: earth, general color: brown
Barret is the 35-yr-old leader of the rebel group Avalanche. He leads the team in the quest to shutdown ShinRa’s “blood-sucking” Mako Reactors. Although he is truly devoted to the team, he regrets having to leave his young god-daughter in the care of others. Barret's motives are unclear, but it is known that his prejudice is sewn deep.
Although he may not look it, Barret is one of the most versatile characters in the game. Unlike the others, he has weapons for close-ranged and long-ranged attacks, which combined with his inherent strength enables him to perform well from either rank.
Tifa Lockheart
Monk equivalent; overall element: water, general color: white
Tifa and Cloud were childhood friends, but parted ways when Cloud left his hometown of Nibelheim to join "Soldier." When her father died, Tifa also left and headed for Midgar. Soon after opening her bar, the “7th Heaven”, she met Barret and joined his ragtag group of rebels. When Cloud appeared, it became Tifa's goal to ensure he remained with the team.
When fighting, nothing gets a message across like a good heavy-handed smack-down. Early on, her attacks are generally weaker than Cloud’s or Barrett’s, but what she lacks in power she makes up for in brutality as she unleashes her Limit Attacks. Each new attack adds to the chain for a total of seven devastating hits. If she can score “Good” or “Yeah!” across the board on the twirling slots, she’s in business. However, if she stops on “Miss” it counts as a misfire and the attack which the slot represents with be discounted.
Aeris Gainsborough
White Mage equivalent; overall element: light, general color: pink
A beautiful 22-yr-old, Aerith is a bright flower amidst a dark and dreary scene. While selling flowers near Avalanche’s first target, Aerith’s life was drastically altered during a chance meeting with Cloud. Because of her mysterious background, ShinRa has pursued her for most of her life. Now she will fight against those who would see her enslaved and destroy that which she holds most dear.
Aerith is the closest character FF7 has to a dedicated magic user. Her physical stats are fairly low but her skills with Spell Materia make her an avid magus.
Red XIII/Nanaki
Monster Ally equivalent; overall element: fire, general color: orange
Although his fiery red fur may make him look like a wild animal, Red’s intellect is well above that of most humans. Not much is known about this “beast’s” origin, but he is found in Shinra’s headquarters where he is forced to participate in their twisted experiments.
Red is strong in both physical and magical combat. His sharp teeth and claws work well with his close-ranged style, however, this limits his combat options and forces him to take a spot on the front line.
Yuffie Kisaragi
Thief equivalent; overall element: lightning, general color: green
This 16-yr-old ninja spent most of her time preying on helpless travelers until she met up with Cloud’s crew. Although she is reluctant to join Avalanche, her ulterior motives drive her to tag along, if only temporarily. Her clever wit and ninja skills coupled with her selfish ways will either make her a powerful ally or a serious nuisance.
Yuffie isn’t one of the strongest fighters, but her long-ranged attacks and Limit skills are quite effective.
Cait Sith
Hazard equivalent; overall element: ice, general color: black
Although Cait’s fortune telling ability may not impress you, his fighting skills are a sight to be awed at. The party first bumps into this joker while wandering around Dynamite’s Gold Saucer. Cait eagerly intrudes into your party to see if his predictions are realized.
Cait isn’t much of a fighter, but his Limit skills are all particularly useful.
Vincent Valentine
Summoner equivalent; overall element: darkness, general color: red
Shrouded in a dark aura, Vincent sends chills down the spine of the toughest warrior. Although he may at first look like an evil vampire, there’s a good man trapped beneath the enigmatic exterior. Vincent’s plight is yet another of ShinRa’s warped experimentation; however, there’s more to his story than just heinous scientific research.
Vincent is a strong, long-ranged fighter, much like Barrett. He’s also quite competent with materia and makes good use of it. His Limit Attacks are powerful yet unpredictable. Once he transforms, Vincent loses control and will continue to attack the enemy at random with random attacks. Each form has a normal attack and two special attacks.
Cid Highwind
Dragoon equivalent; overall element: wind, general color: blue
Cid is an expert pilot who dreams of one day becoming the first man in space. His dream would have been fulfilled, but he aborted a launch to save the life of one of his crew. Now he spends life trying to repair his inoperable rocket in the hopes that Shinra will one day reinstate the space program, giving him another chance at fulfilling his dream.
With his lance in hand, Cid is always prepared for battle. His fighting skills are top-notched and come in handy throughout most of the game. Cid’s stats are pretty average across the board, which can help or hinder his performance depending on how he is equipped.

The Enemy

Sephiroth - Master Swordsman
The Great Sephiroth of the Ten-Year War was once a generally good man. Five years ago however, having acquired disturbing knowledge concerning his parentage, he’d been driven insane. Though missing for five years, Sephiroth has resurfaced and now scours the land to fulfill his ultimate goal. Although no one knows of Sephiroth’s plans, it is known that he is dangerous and must be stopped.
Shinra and Rufus - Presidents of ShinRa, Inc
President Shinra and his son Vice President Rufus are two of the most power-driven men in the world. When Shinra is killed, Rufus immediately takes charge and throws Shinra, Inc into overdrive. Though seemingly no more than a punk, Rufus is well-versed in the role of leadership and can hold his own in battle.
Scarlet and Heidegger - Techno-Masterminds
Though their efforts are always belittled by Rufus, Scarlet and Heidegger are two people feared greatly by those either employed in or harassed by Shinra.
Head of the Weapon Development Department, Scarlet is a mechanical mastermind constantly searching for large ballistics or dynamics weaponry and vast power sources. It is her dream to create the ultimate in technological weaponry.
Heidegger is a veteran of the Ten-Year War and is the current general of the entire Shinra army. He was very loyal to President Shinra, however it is uncertain of how much he’ll stand from Rufus before he falters.
The Turks:
Tseng, Reno, Rook, & Elena - Assorted Specialties
The four lawyer-looking members of Shinra’s Special Operative group, the Turks, behave more like a gang than the former. As the top-ranked members of the Turks organization that was formed by Rufus, they tend to abuse the luxuries afforded them. Their duty to Shinra lies in the acquisition of loyalty, respect, and fear from the populace. They also dabble in the sludge of kidnaping, extortion, and subterfuge.
Tseng — Tseng considers himself to be a skilled swordsman; however his aptitude can never match the members of the Cannon elite. He is skilled at everything he is ordered to do. His behavior seems that of a servant, yet there is believed to be a hidden agenda on his mind.
Reno — surprisingly, not much is known about Mr. Reno except that he has many female admirers.
Rude — like Tifa, Rude is one of Master Zangan’s 128 students across the world.
Elena — Elena is a rich kid who has spent her life researching ShinRa’s history as well as that of Rufus.
Professor Hojo - Scientist
A biology wizard, Hojo discovered the link between the monsters of the world and a creature he calls Jenova. During his experiments, Hojo violated many sacred laws of science, creating monsters out of animals with a combination of Jenova cells and Mako liquid. Although he finds monsters quite fascinating, his primary interest lies in the creation of a human warrior from Jenova’s cells.
Palmer - Dynamics Expert
The head of Shinra’s Space Program, Palmer has continually tried to curve the company’s interest back toward the stars. A loud, fat, bald nuisance, Palmer is considered rarely, if ever.
Dyne - Coal Miner
Dyne is an old friend of Barrett. Due to the decision Barrett made to include Corel in the benefits of Mako energy, Dyne’s wife along with the rest of the town was killed. It was a mistake on behalf of Shinra, who believed that “rebels” from Corel had deliberately destroyed the reactor built in the mountains. When Barrett runs into Dyne, the two have bad-blood to work out before either can move on.
The Gi - Specters
The Gi are a tribe of large Hun-like warriors who once invaded Cosmo Canyon and lost their lives. Fought back by one brave soul, the spirits of the warriors remain in the tunnels beneath the canyon to this day.
Godo Kisaragi - Emperor of Wutai
Godo and the Army of Wutai brought forth the Ten-Year War and were forced to surrender their city to ShinRa as the result of their loss. In the present day, Wutai is no more than a tourist resort and its once great warriors lie around their homes with nothing to do. Godo’s fear of ShinRa makes him uncomfortably loyal and when his daughter Yuffie tries to reason with him, he becomes enraged.

Other NPCs

Biggs
Biggs is a native of Rocket Town. After ShinRa nixed the space program, Biggs saw the dreams of his idol Cid crash and burn to nothing. He set out to Midgar to reason with the president. However, when he arrived he saw how things really were. Midgar, the Metropolis of Mako, was nothing more than a mass of jumbled machines and pipes and wires, a huge metal monstrosity sitting atop a poor and suffering city. When he met Jessie, his heart sank. He didn’t want such a nice girl to live in this kind of place. That’s when the two of them ran across Barret, who then was just a man filled with anger trying to get revenge. The three of them formed Avalanche, the first resistance against Mako.
Jessie
Jessie comes from the small town below Junon. She’s one of the villagers that wants to protect the large Condor atop the local reactor mountain, Fort Condor. When Jessie realized that fighting at the base of the mountain wasn’t enough to protect the Condors, she traveled to Midgard to battle Shinra at the source. That’s where she met Biggs and that was the same time when the two of them agreed to help Barrett fight Shinra together, for the fate of the people, the Condors, and the world.
Wedge
Wedge joined Barret’s resistance shortly after it was formed. A native of Wutai, Wedge is one of the few people who still holds hope for the restoration of the once great city. Hoping to earn enough money to buy Wutai out of Shinra’s custody, Wedge fights alongside Avalanche against everything and anything made by Shinra.
Marlene Wallace
Barrett’s god-daughter Marlene grew up calling him Papa. However, Marlene’s real father is an old friend of Barret: Dyne. She’s lived in Midgar as long as she can remember; which is since Barrett moved here to fight ShinRa. Living in the slums, she’s never been to school yet Barrett and the others all try their best to teach her about the world. She is a good judge of character and likes flowers, which is why she is so comfortable when Barrett must leave her with Aerith’s mother.
Johnny
Johnny befriended Tifa immediately after she opened her bar the “7th Heaven” and they’ve had laughs ever since, albeit between her missions with Avalanche. Johnny’s interest in joining "Soldier" puts Tifa off somewhat which discourages him from seeing it through. (Though he’d never admit she was the reason.) Johnny does leave Midgard though, and you’ll see him in different locations as you travel the world.
Elmyra Gainsborough
Although called “mother” for perhaps seventeen years, Elmyra isn’t Aeris’s real mother. Having lived in Midgard all her life, Elmyra had hoped to one day leave and have a family. While her husband was fighting in the Ten-Year War, Elmyra found Aeris at the train station clutching her dying mother. As Elmyra knelt beside them, the mother whispered her final wish that she take Aerith somewhere safe. It was a couple of years later when Aerith told Elmyra her husband had passed away. The only one she had left now was Aeris, and she was going to cherish her.
Don Corneo
A perverted mob-boss, Corneo claims to be searching for a bride. However, his interest in women is purely sexual, not passionate. The Don remains true to his title, though, as he assists Shinra in seemingly insignificant ways meanwhile obtaining useful information which works to his benefit.
Mukki
The owner of the slums’ most popular brothel, the Honeybee Inn, Mukki is a bi-curious man who shares his spa with many, many men. Business from Shinra, Mukki’s primary source of income, decreases dramatically and he is forced to foreclose on his wondrous establishment. He then travels to Costa del Sol for a little “Mukki Time.”
Reeve
Not much is known about Reeve except that he is an employee at ShinRa who heads the Expense Management division. He is very disturbed by Shina’s lack of concern for the well-being of the populace and is greatly upset when he decides against rebuilding the decimated Sector 5.
Cloud's mother
Cloud’s mother has been raising him alone since the disappearance of his father some time ago. She sees Cloud as troubled and somewhat lazy and she wishes for an older girlfriend for him who can take care of him.
Tifa's father
Tifa’s father is a widower. His wife died when Tifa was still young. He never told Tifa how her mother died until shortly before the Sephiroth incident. Although, somehow he believed she’d always known.
Master Zangan
The great martial arts instructor, Master Zangan, travels the world over in search of young talent. He is very finicky about who he takes on as a student. Zangan only teaches those who have the fighting spirit of a warrior. It doesn’t matter if they intend to use his techniques for good or evil as long as they put his techniques to use.
Choco Bill, Billy, & Chole
Chocobo breeders running the Chocobo Ranch, the men of the ranch are fast talkers; beware. Choco Bill is Billy and Chole’s grandfather. No one on the ranch mentions Billy and Chole’s parents, so it isn’t an exaggeration to assume the worst.
Priscilla
A young girl who lives with her grandfather in the village below Junon, she has a knack for communicating with animals, especially her best friend, “Mr. Dolphin.” She has a whistle which she uses to order Mr. Dolphin to jump and a pendant of materia that contains the summon spell “Shiva.”
Dio
The owner of the Gold Saucer, Dio is a vain, self-concerned man that doesn’t listen to reason. Though he seems both ignorant and arrogant, Dio continues to push the limits of the Saucer to make it more appealing to the newer, younger generations. He tries to keep the events and rides awe-inspiring and the games innovative. His favorite areas are the Speed Arena and the Battle Arena. He is also Zangan’s younger brother.
Bugenhagen
The short, floating, whiskered old man that Red calls “grandfather” is an expert in astronomy, cosmology, and astrology. When the group meets Bugenhagen for the first time, Red opts to stay behind in Cosmo Canyon.
Seto
The parents of the beast, Nanaki: Red’s true name. As his mother and Bugenhagen hid Nanaki somewhere safe, Seto fought deep beneath the canyon against the Gi tribe. For years, Nanaki believed his father to have been a coward who left him and his mother during a trying struggle. The truth that lay at the end of the cavern is that Seto was turned to stone by the poisonous arrows of the Gi.
Shera
A mechanic in Cid’s launch crew, Shera was overly-concerned about the oxygen tanks near the engine room. On the day of lift-off, she was still checking the tanks and Cid, afraid for her life, aborted the launch. To this day, Shera feels obligated to help Cid around the house despite the way he treats her.
Gorki, Shake, Chekhov, and Staniv
Four great warriors of Wutai, three of these poor souls were once respected as heroes of Wutai, but all four and Godo himself are now part of the tourist attraction: The Five-Floor Pagoda. What once was a sacred trial for the worthy is now a simple competition. Although anybody can enter, no one to this day has ever defeated the first floor: Gorki.
Ifalna
Aerith’s biological mother and last remaining Cetra (Ancient), Ifalna was interviewed by Professor Gast sometime shortly before Hojo’s outrageous experiments in Nibelheim.
Professor Gast
A scientist devoted to research into the history of the ancient civilization of the Cetra, Professor Gast also happens to be Aerith’s biological father. Having met a woman with great knowledge of the Cetra, Gast’s research thrived. It was sometime after Ifalna conceived that she revealed her heritage to Gast.
Holzoff
The founder of the small snow village and the Icicle Inn for which it is named, Randon is a legend on the mountain as only he risked hypothermia, frostbite, and death to explore the freezing snowfield and map out the terrain. Randon spends most of his time as a hermit at the foot of Gaia Mountain, warding off would-be riskbreakers.
Zack Fair
An elite "Soldier" who once served with the champion of the Ten-Year War, Zack was nearly as famous as his idol, the Great Sephiroth. Zack was known casually only by two people: Sephiroth and Cloud.
Cloud, Aged Fourteen
Cloud as he was seven years ago. He claimed he would become a soldier in the Shinra militia. It was his belief that he would become an elite Cannon. He hesitantly promised Tifa that he would be her hero and come to her rescue in the future.
Tifa, Aged Thirteen
Tifa as she was seven years ago. She learned of Cloud’s ambition for the first time that night. She made him promise to come to her rescue if she ever needed a hero.

The names and bios are all my personal creations. Keep in mind, I copied this stuff directly from my own computer and didn't have time to edit it simply to please my fellow FF7 compatriots.
