The part that I'm assuming refers to the horse also calls it 'My friend', and I believe the only one who is really connected to it in any way is Odin, but he doesn't seem to fit the rest of the riddle. This could mean that it doesn't refer to the horse. Either way, Odin and Sleipnir (is that the correct spelling?) are my guess.

I think it has to do with Squad B during the SeeD exam. In Squad B, two were fortunate (Squall & Zell passed), and one failed (Seifer). I'm not entirely sure about line 3 (I thought Seifer failed because he disobeyed orders), but the one who failed (Seifer) never discovered the true secret it held (the true purpose of SeeDs).
