He likes spears? Why does Cloud use a sword? Why does Aries use a Rod? Why does Vincent use a gun? He could just use that claw arm of his. Why do any of them use the weapons they have?

Cloud uses a sword to emulate Sephiroth, Aerith uses a rod because she's poor and not very athletic so she can't afford anything else, Vincent uses a gun because he used to be a turk, and all good gangsters have guns.

See, they all have reasons. Cid doesn't.

EDIT: Kishi, that doesn't answer why it doesn't go along with the stooooryyyyy.

Eh, how about . . . Cid became a fisherman after the whole rocket thing. He prefers stabbing the fish in his frustration as opposed to using a fishing rod.

By the way, Cloud uses a sword because all SOLDIERs do and he believes he is one. Aeris uses a rod because living in Midgard she needed to defend herself and a rod/staff/bo is the best defensive weapon ever made. Vincent uses a gun because it is a non-intimate weapon which allows him to kill without remorse if need be. Yuffie uses a throw instead of a ninja sword or daggers because she's just a little show-off. Red XIII doesn't actually use his earrings, they just raise his attacks somehow. Cait Sith . . . Cait Sith is the only character in the game whose "weapon" doesn't make sense. How does a better microphone allow your giant mog to attack any stronger.

Given that Cid's last name is Highwind, his use of the spear (as well as Boost Jump/Hyper Jump Limit Breaks) is likely an allusion to Kain Highwind of FFIV fame. And, as Kishi has already pointed out, he carries on the Dragon Knight tradition, even if he isn't actually a Dragon Knight (or Dragoon, if you prefer).

Okay Aeris is dead from the end of disc 1 and on. She can't be revived no matter what you do. If she did it would change the ending and there is only one ending. People keep saying that but they have no proof at all. Oh yeah dont forget that you cant play as sephiroth or young cloud either..
If you really wanted to, you could you gameshark to change sprites, but it really doesn't do any thing but make the game crash.

Ancestry has nothing to do with it as each FF story takes place in an entirely different world. The artist apparently didn't think about a real reason for the spear besides it being a tribute to Kain Highwind. The whole KH-CH thing is just an easter egg.

I like the thought of him practicing with the spear to stab a flagpole in the moon or something.
I also like Jellisaurus's idea of him pretending to be a helicoptor.

The concept artist for FFVII was Tetsuya Nomura. The concept artist for FFIV was Yoshitaka Amano. Amano did some FFVII art, but he wasn't the official concept artist for the game.

Aye, playin FF5 right now and I gave Bartz the dragoon class with the !Image Command. Makes him practicly invincible AND he hits 4 times harder than my mages.

Each character is a derivitave of old fashioned classes, for example Cloud is based on a warrior or fighter, barrett and vincent would be gunmen, tifa would be a monk, so if thats the case then Cid's based off of a dragoon (hence the high jump and hyper jump limit breaks) so he uses a spear, lets get back on topic people :D

If he had a sword then cloud wouldent be unique, and so on. So they made a new weapon up for cid. As some one said earlia the question u should be asking is... We know that Cid made his spear by hand. Perhaps when he was a young man, tinkering with machinery, he decided to craft the weapon he'd been taught at school or whatever.

People learn different weapons for different reasons. Maybe Cid liked the speed and precision of the spear, while Tifa had a natural aptitude for empty-handed fighting and Vincent had the strength, precision and job requirements to wield high-power firearms.
