... When / if (some of you might not want to have children) you have children, will you let them find their own taste in music or influence them to listen to the same genre of music that you listen to?

I personally would influence them... because if I let them go on their to find out what music they like, they might start listening to Hardhouse or Rap, which would obviously encourage them to start drugs.. or become a chav / scally / townie (whichever you prefer)
But Rock & Heavy Metal wouldn't influence anything like that (in my opinion).

So, what is YOUR opinion? :p

Well, I would be listening to my own music quite often, so I think that would naturally influence them, either for or against, my musical tastes.

A mix of both.

Well, I don't want them to listen to rap and techno because it sucks, so I'll play the songs I like quite often, and hope for the best. That's really the most I can do.

Since I listen to pretty much everything, I'd let them do the same and then decide for themselves what they like and want to listen to. I don't have one particular sort of music I'd want to influence them to like, I'd just encourage them to listen to different sorts of things.

They'd be forced to listen to pseudo-electronic trance-rock trip-hop.

And like it.

I don't have kids, but when I do, I'll let them develop their own music taste.
Music defines ones personally perfectly.

I wouldn't try to influence them, I'd just have them listen to a diverse range of music, and then see which ones they liked.

I'd let the little buggers choose what they want. It's not like they'll be getting any other luxuries, so I'll let them choose their own music. :spin:

This is silly. It doesn't matter how much you might try to push (influence) your taste onto your child, they are still their own person with their own likes and dislikes regardless of what you might do to try to change or alter that. I wouldn't ever do that and as it is, the music that my daughter listens to is at least something that can be listened to in public, unlike some of mine. :)

Influence like crazy. I wouldn't want to have crap music blaring out at all hours. Plus some of the attitudes/whatever that go with say, rap music or nu-metal are frankly idiotic, and I wouldn't want any kid to be like that, let alone mine.

I would want to influence my kids music tastes but if they did like something else i would respect that too as long as they're not blasting total crap. Plus i wouldnt let them ever change my radio/cds when im home.
I grew up in a house where basically the only thing played was classic rock. My dad had it set so the "main radio" i guess i would call it came on automatically right around when he got home from work untill around 11 at night and its still like that. Now the only music i really like is classic rock so i would definately say peoples intrests can be influenced.

I think it's kind of a rule of thumb that kids tend to hate the music that their parents like.

I will disown my child if he or she does not like the music I like.

I would influence them, but without meaning to. As, I listen to music all of the time. But I guess they would end up liking their own thing anyway.
However, If my child turned out to like some crap such as Britney spears, I would have no choice but to kill them.
I would like to stamp on her face.

They can listen to whatever, but if they turn on some Rap at maximum volume, they're getting thrown out the window :)

Exactly, except that my daughter listens to gangsta rap.

Influencing is not necessarily pushing. If you try and force a child to like something, a natural response is for them to rebel and do their own thing. However, what you listen to may influence their tastes as they assimilate certain likes and dislikes. You may not be pushing anything forcefully, but you are certainly exposing them to something that they may not have ever listened to on their own and may learn to like as a result.

Wouldn't that be influencing them? Whether it was towards or away from the music you like, it would still be an influence.

I figure I'll let my kid listen to whatever they want, as long as it isn't extreme--gangsta rap, cult chanting, and Barry Manilow will earn them a broken stereo. Of course whatever parents listen to will influence their children--if only by exposing them to music they wouldn't normally be exposed to--but most parents wouldn't "force" their music (or their anything) on their children, only "force" them away from something they disagree strongly with...like gangsta rap, etc.

And I agree with Leeza  Of course I will raise them sensibly and thus they will be a sensible kid and sensible kids listen to sensible music ^_~ Hopefully....

I'd introduce them to a lot of music. I'd also try to get them to get into any kind of musical instrument. I'd let them learn to play instruments as well as listen to music that I do and try to get them to listen to what they want. There are two sides of a coin, and neither is better than the other.

You can't not influence your kids in everything you do, but make a conscious effort... Yeah, of course I will. Babies like music even before they're born, so I'll play lots of music for my baby.

It doesn't really matter. They will listen to what they like to listen to eventually. I was easily influenced by music when I was younger...mainly because I am not that big of a music fan. Now I listen to what ever catches my ear. Usually it does have a techno beat to it...so I tend to like J-Pop and Rock because of that. I also mainly listen to songs from shows and games because I don't care enough about music to acutally go out and listen to stuff on the radio just to be bombarded by 4 trillion commercials. My kids will be fucked.

I don't care what my kids choose to listen to. I hope it's good music, but I don't have much control over it.
