View Full Version : Necessary items for College?

Just a quick one. I'm entering into College next year to undergo Culinary Arts and Business Administration (Exec Chefs need Business Admin - lots of money to work with that involves food planning) and I was curious what some necessary items for college are (don't say pencils and pens, etc.)

I'm planning on purchasing a laptop (preferable an iBook from Apple) and a Palm Pilot.

Anything else?

Are Apple computers very good for things that are strictly education wise?

Like just for homework and researching, ect? Sure, though I'd still get a PC for such purposes myself.

Apples are great (especially since they never get all those viruses that constantly crash college computers on the network), but I'd find out which computer os your school mainly uses (most colleges have some kind of deal with certain models, for instance, my undergrad was configured for iMacs and Dells), and its often cheaper to buy your computer through the school. If you do that, many schools will service your computer for free (my grad school will even fix/replace broken iPods for free if you buy them through the school).

Other essentials:

Mini Fridge
Britta (most water at college sucks)
Lots of Ramen
Iron
Quarters, quarters, quarters (unless you want to quarter whore)
Cinder Blocks (Or something else to loft your bed with so you can store things underneath it)
Plastic Tubs to store things in
Sticky Hooks
Lightbulbs
A hammer, screwdriver, and nails
EXTENSION CORDS
Control Strips that let you plug a million things into one socket
PENCIL SHARPENER
Stapler
Crates or stackable shelves
A TV with a crazy antenna (to try to get the one station that comes in)
Shot glasses
Dry Erase Board
Christmas Lights (no college room exists without them in my experience)
Tissues
Frabreeze
A spounge
A vacumn or carpet sweeper
A carpet (if you have wood floors)
White toothpaste (to stick in all the holes you're gonna make in your walls)

And as much free stuff as you can carry away from home. Every time I go home to visit I steal shampoo, quarters, Tylenol, and a million other little things I can't afford to buy.
;)

I just finished my first year.

Here's a checklist.

Flashlight
Scooter/Bicycle
Vacuum
Cups
Cheap Silverware
Hiding places
Somewhere to keep your change
Playstation 2
XBox
Television
Laundry basket/hamper
Lots of small bills for vending machines
Frisbee. Even if you don't like frisbee, you need one.
Possibly a pool cue. You don't want to use the university's.
All the toiletries, toothbrush, razor, shampoo, etc.
Pain reliever, antacids
Red Bull or caffeine pills.
Lots and lots and lots of socks, trust me.
A few towels you don't mind totally destroying, this is important.
Pocket knife
Trash bags, tons
Malt-o-Meal
Microwave perhaps
Alarm clock
Lamps
Headphones
Good reading material or handheld tetris
A carpet or rug, it's waaaaaaaaay better than a hard floor
A wide range of music, you'll get sick of your own music
A fold-up chair or two
Data cables for a laptop
Sticky tack, thumb tacks, staples, tape, etc.
Poncho
Blanket for going outside
Sturdy shoes of several types
I don't know about Canada, but sandals are vital

Any more questions, just ask away, Chef.

You'll need some kind of Lysol spray if you're like me and get really wierd about sitting on the same toilet as at least 3 other guys.

Any kind of computer will be fine unless you're doing very specific techie design stuff that Apple is best at. That's stuff that I don't know much about though, and, generally, anything with a word processor and DSL capability will be perfectly fine. Personally, I like to have at least 400Mhz, so I'll suggest that.

Don't forget a laundry basket of sorts...

I guess a computer means you won't need a cd player, but you'll still need your cds. Other than that, and school supplies, you can get what you really need on short notice. Don't bring too much crap with you, you have no idea how much you'll have to do. Anything you bring other than a walkman to listen to music to while studying outside will probably do little more than sit around and gather dust.

Everything you need to survive as of right now, and a place to put it all, because most schools don't offer that.

And at LEAST one sweat shirt, one cowboy hat, and one pair of ridiculously expensive flip flops. In Chapel Hill, they wear Rainbows, which are something like $45.00 a pair.

and oddly enough, I made it through all four years of college without owning any sandals.

Yeah, but those rainbows don't have a lifetime guarantee ;)

I don't actually own a pair of those ridiculous things, I just wanted to make a snazzy comeback. *snazzes*

That boggles my mind. You didn't even have shower sandals?

*has 10 pairs of flip-flops*

Oh and according to the 10 Commandments of College (http://www.wfu.edu/users/watkjk1/The%20Ten%20Commandments%20of%20College.htm), you need a hoodie.

You should probably stop while you're ahead. You're just going to fail and drop out anyway.

But if you do decide to go, bring alcohol. And maybe cigarettes...but mostly alcohol.

Duct tape.

Yeah, you really do need that so you can write silly Japanese words on strips of it and stick them all over yourself and other people.

Nope. Of course I only lived in the dorms for one year, and I made a habit of walking around barefoot in so many places I shouldn't have that I didn't see the point of wearing sandals in the shower. It's like getting a diet coke with your Big Mac extra value meal.

Laptop should cover all the needs... word processor, games, porn. I can't think of anything else you'll need.

Maybe a plunger. I had to get one of those.

Yes - shower sandals are a MUST. Especially when you use the shower after the creepy kid down the hall has finished wanking off in it. *shivers at the memory* Hooray for co-ed bathrooms.

Drop out of Culinary College, the one thing I love and have a great knowledge of? Yes. You're right.

And I don't drink.

Paper, binders, computer, laptop if you want, pillow, blanket, clothes, money and utensils. You are going into culinary school so bring your pots and pans and anything else you need in the kitchen (knives, tools, etc).

Anything else (condoms, porn, etc) is up to you and subject to personal tastes.

I doubt Tyler will succumb to the temptations of booze and partying or have anything more than occasional small urges to drop out of culinary college. As much as I know about him, I just can't see those things happening.

Having said that, I recommend brining headphones to help drown out the sound of your noisy dormmates. :p
