I prefer not to compare/contrast musical genres in terms of their superiority. It makes me itch.

Care to specify what generation/style of hip hop? I'm all for the oldies and some nerdcore hip hop, plus turntablism or stuff that's just kind of ambient beats but no lyrics.

The mainstream gangster bull sucks, though. Especially with all the white suburbanites that take it as gospel.

I have a wide variety of genres occupying my playlist - I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to music, and I don't really pay attention to genre too much. I listen to whatever sounds good to my ears.

This whole argument is objective. I Love REAL Hip Hop and I love Rock. By REAL Hip Hop I mean underground hip hop, where cash doesn't control output, same as rock really.
Hip Hop Like, Jedi Mind Tricks, Atmosphere, Sage Francis to Notorious BIG. There is fantastic hip hop out there. Unfortunately most people who are new to it or just haven't bothered TRYINg because all they see is the Fake Thug Bling Bling B**ches n Pimps Garbage you see on MTV.
But yea you can't really have a better>worse argument on this.

The thing about hiphop and rock is the fact that they both have the same orgins. The Blues. In which the blues originated from spiritual songs slaves use to sing. Now we consider them church songs lol. They are both goo dgenres i hate mainstream rap and R&B and mainstream rock mainly because it has apop sound to it.I like stuff that rarely get sheard.

Still is, he's not actually 'in' Atmosphere, Atmosphere is Slug & ANT (used to be Slug, Stress, Spawn & ANT) with Mr Dibbs taking the Tables as ANT doesn't Tour or perform he just drops the beats. They're all on Rhymesayers label though. <3 Rhymesayers

I can't stand rap nor hip-hop, but if you like it better, whatever. I barely condiser rap music though, it's just fast talking with some beat, doesn't matter what it is, some people in my class were listeining to a hip-hop song with the ice cream truck song... :sweatdrop It doesn't doesn't seem like they even try with their music, sorry,

i'm with Cuchulainn on this one...other peeps like dead prez, non phixion, and k-os can really rock a mic...crap you see on TV is just commericial, they'll be gone in a year

but i listen MORE to rock music/alternative/indie...that's just my preference (radiohead, interpol, cardigans, bright eyes, coldplay, weezer, yeah yeah yeahs, le tigre, m83) and more and more

genre's can't be superior to each other (technically)...rock and hip hop both have their history...i find the history of hip hop more interesting, guys like kool herk, jazzy jeff, pete rock, cl smooth....very cool people to learn about

Oh?

Anyways, I'd have to say that I disagree. :) I used to almost sort of not really like it, and I used to be really open-minded when it came to music, but over the past couple years my tastes have narrowed, and it's only rock now. And I'd like to keep it that way. The way it sounds is overall much more pleasing to my ears, as are the lyrics, and the actual people in the bands themselves.

Go rock.

Led Zeppelin > all other real rockbands > hiphop > nu-rock like Maroon 5, Green Day etc > mass-hip-hop & rap.

I prefer a much rougher style, but when it comes to rock, Led Zeppelin is unbeatable. And that's it.

I like how you don't say WHY you think Hip Hop is better than Rock, you just say it is. Call me old fashioned, but I like music that requires talent. I enjoy synth-pop like Depeche Mode, but that's about as poppy as my tastes run (with an exception for really good singers). I don't like rock bands that don't have a good talented vocalist, which means I don't like any Hardcore or Metal.

Yep... If someone isn't going to compose anything, and is just going to sing to prerecorded sounds, they better be a REALLY good singer. It just makes sense.

This has pleased me greatly. Amy Lee has an amazing voice, which to me, more than the great piano, and the rest of the instruments (which to be perfectly honest, the guitarists in Evanescence aren't great. 'Tis the truth. I'm hoping now that Evanescence has a new guitarist, they get better in the guitar area. We'll see on November 5th, the release date of the new Ev CD) because the main focus in the band is Amy's beautiful voice.

some1 clarify for me the subtle differences between rap and hip hop.

also, when 2pac was still around ruling the music scene (God rest his soul), his albums won awards for r &b AND rap. how is this possible?i never heard an ounce of r&b in 2pac. maybe the beat..but that doesn't constitute the genre...

basically, people have different moods and different emotions at different times. when im depressed or i feel overly aggressive, i tend to listen to hip hop/rap. when im in love or have been hurt emotionally, its emo/rock for me.

oh yah. hip hop>rock. tho im into the whole emo thing prolly almost as much. hip hop and rock are basically teh same thing, whether ppl like to acknowledge it or not....especially emo;they just use different mediums....

ie:hip hop:killing other ppl
emo:killing themselves.

:rolleyes2

If it wasn't rap it'd be something else, the large majority of these people are idiots and they need something to follow. And if rock had become the favour of choice of the violent idiot, what's to say the rest of us wouldn't be listening to hip-hop because we wanted a change from that which was flooding the mainstream?

I don't have anything against rap or hip-hop as genres, it's just there's a lot of people around at the moment who do it really, really badly.
