FF Character Tournament Madness! Winner revealed!

Welcome to the second installment of the Official Eyes on Final Fantasy Character Tournament, or April Madness if you prefer. This year we will have 4 divisions, each representing a certain set of games. No more FFVI characters hogging up the later rounds. The divisions are:

Old School (FFI-III, Mystic Quest)
Glory Days (FFIV-VI)
Teen Angst (FFVII-IX)
Games Spuuky Hasn't Played (FFX, X-2, XI, Tactics, Tactics Advance, Crystal Chronicles)

Before we get things underway, we have a few spots left to fill, and a once in a lifetime opportunity for four lucky characters to make the big dance. This is known as the play-in round. Eight characters will battle it out in one-on-one matchups for the 16 seeds in this preliminary match. The winners never end up doing anything, but it provides for an emotional moment for some of these characters who always dreamed of making this tournament.

As always, <b>vote by selecting one name out of each lettered pair. This is a multpile selection poll, so you can vote in as many or as few matches as you like</b>. Use any criteria you like for making your selection: power, personality, importance to story, personal preference, etc.

Rounds will last a couple days. Here is an unfinished bracket for those of you who want to get a head start on your office pools.

I don't really car about Josef and Ming-Wu... but I'll just vote Ming-Wu.

Cyan was 1 of my fav FFVI characters so he gets my second vote.

Eiko got my thirth vote since I simply like her more than Selphie... and she doesn't use any cheap The End moves.

I've never been able to play FFT since I live in europe... but someday I will... because it really seems to be a great game. FFTA on the other hand was a dissapointment in my opinion and I never liked the characters in it and therefore Agrias gets my last vote... just because he probably is from a better game and PROBABLY is a better character. :greenie:

Kind of a boring first round for me. I voted for all higher seeds--except for the 1 seed. That which has never happened in the NCAA tournament might happen here! FFVI definitely has a chance to dominate, partially due to the limitations of FFV characters in the process.

I really hope that Shadow and Rydia will do good since they are my absolute favourite FF characters. :)

Well, it's definitely not looking too good for the V cast, although I did vote for a couple of them.

I tried to vote based on who I liked, and when I liked both characters fairly equally, then I would vote for the one I thought would have the least likely chance of making it to see Round 2. My way of rooting for the underdog.

Terra's looking like she'll most definitely trounce Rosa - it's now 10-nil in her favor.

Yes, Like Del Said, FF6 tends to destroy in the early rounds, but in the end there hasn't been an FF6 winner yet. Cloud and Beatrix are the only winners thuis far and are excluded from this tourney.

Galuf is Krile's father and she inherits everything that Galuf is so a vote for Krile is a vote for Galuf.

So many great characters to choose from. I'd be happy with the results from this round, no matter what character they are. I like all eight that made it this far a lot. This bracket is definitely the hardest to pick from for me. ^^

The problem with the Celes vs. Shadow thing is that they are both among my fav. FFVI characters! Still, Shadow is cooler. We need two more votes for Shadow and no votes for Celes. PLEASE!!!

Shadow wasn't as compelling a character in game because of his "I'm a silent badass" persona. I did like his dreams, but they don't make up for the depth that Celes was given.

I do think Kain's character has much more depth than Rydia, what with his relationship with Cecil and Rosa and why he was susceptible to what happened.

I should have helped with the seeding. I'd say each of these four matchups is pretty even. Celes and Shadow are both decent, Locke and Cecil are both very powerful, Terra and Edgar are about equally great, and same with Rydia and Kain.

Just goes to show you how absolutely PATHETIC MQ is in the eyes of most FF players. Only one was put in the poll and that one has recieved ZERO votes LOL how could they put the Final Fantasy name on that game? The one disgrace to the FF series that I have ever played. I don't love FF:CC, but at least it isn't a disgrace like MQ was.

Ninja (FFI). Josef's not really all that impressive. I'll take the Sasuke-wielding Ninja.

Ninja (FFIII). Probably the most powerful character in the old-school division. Ragnarok in one hand, Masamune in the other. Need I say more? I will. Also has a very powerful version of Throw.

Black Wizard (FFI). Tough call. But I'll go with the offensive magic.

Knight (FFI). The original sword-guy.

Sage (FFIII). The ultimate magical powerhouse. Has all summons and all magic.

Summoner (FFIII). Tough call. I would have taken the DoS Red Wizard, thanks to Lightbringer, but that doesn't strike me as very old-school. The real RW falls short.

Lionheart (FFII). The only battle where I actually had to look beyond battle utility. Lionheart's just, well, cooler than Maria. By a lot.

Frionel (FFII). My Frionel is powered up excessively. Gordon is....the FFII equivalent of Edward/Gilbert (ouch). This qualifies as a rout.


For obvious reasons, with the old-school games, character development isn't a high priority.

Ninja (FFIII). Still dual wielding Ragnarok and Masamune. Still the old-school ninja with Throw. Not close.

Knight (FFI). Knight is the powerhouse class of FFI, in my opinion. Tough call, though.

Gus (FFII). If Gus somehow got by the Sage, the Summoner has no chance.

Frionel (FFII). Underdeveloped, personality-lacking main characters are pretty awesome.

Real FFI Black Mages/Wizards are kind of lacking as far as Hadoken and stabbity death are concerned. Besides, BM can never actually manage to kill Fighter (unless you count the episode where BM sacrificed the whole party, only to have Sarda immediately bring them back).

And that is what makes the 8-bit mage seem all the more cooler. He's actually being forced to go on this whole "save the world" adventure, unlike the FF1 mage, who does so willingly.

The original Ninja managed to hang on, while Maria beating Frionel is the biggest upset so far. These characters will advance to the Sweet 16 and join their fellow cartridge friends.

Now we swtich gears and move on to a potluck division of sorts, the Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division. Spuuky is a busy man, as you could imagine, and so doesn't have time to play some of the later games in the series, but hopefully some of you have played them! I fully expect FFX dominance in this division, even though Tactics had some great characters. Round 1:

Agrias (sounds cooler).
RDM/NIN (probably is cooler since Marche not really is all that awesome).
Rikku (she was good in FFX).
Orlandu (once again... is PROBABLY much cooler).

Yuna (she was atleast ok in FFX and extremely powerful in battles).

Maria has had an impressive run, beating a few higher seeds in the last rounds, but she faces her biggest challenge in the powerful Knight. It is the classic struggle of personality vs. strength that you will only get in the Old School Division. The first FF heroine vs. the first FF hero! The Knight's incredible power and defense, might be too much. Of course, with the FFII levelling system, Maria could be turned into a similar type of character, but that doesn't really fit her. Give her a bow and throw her in the back row tossing out Fire11 spells, that's what I say.

Glory Days Division

1 Celes (VI) vs.
2 Rydia (IV)

Girl power reigns supreme in this tough division. A valiant effort from Rydia, she has been able to hang with the big kids, aka the FFVI crew, but now she has one more to deal with. After dumping last year's runner up, Celes hopes to continue her good fortune against the Caller of Mist. Will Runic be able to stop Bahamut's Megaflare? The winner of this match has a very good chance of making it to the finals, going up against the weaker Old School division, so this is great chance for both ladies to make it big!

Teen Angst Division

1 Vivi (IX) vs.
3 Vincent (VII)

The battle of the Vs! Vivi surprised me with a number 1 seed, but he has stepped up to the plate so far. Now he faces the enigmatic Vincent. These characters are both the result of expiriments, so there might be some kinship here. They also both attack from afar, Vivi with his powerful black magic, and Vincent with a shiny gun. Could be a good match. I mean, whatever.

We close this round with a battle between two powerful and wise knights. Excalibur vs. Masamune. Thunder god vs. Undead. Both characters have great popularity due to their strong will and convictions, and their resolve to stand up for what they believe in. Armed with Excalibur, T.G. Cid will attempt to Lightning Stab his way through the legendary guardian. With the equally notorious Masamune, Auron will try to lure Orlandu into one of his Tornado overdrives. Only one can make it to the Final Four!

A very close battle where 8-bit competitors traded attacks for magic. With both having white magic abilities, this looked to end in a draw, but at the last second Maria uses her last 16 MP to throw out an Ultima16 prayer, and it does the job.

Looks like the former Magitek Knight was no match for the Caller. After trading spells, Rydia started her Bahamut attack, and as a last ditch Runic effort Celes put up her sword, only to have it blown away by the king of dragons.

Vivi tried to win this one with the auto-reflect + reflectX2 approach. This provided for some powerful offense, which gave him the edge for a while, but also allowed Vincent to get a limit break. The little mage could not reflect a devastating Splattercombo.

In this turn-based match, Orlandu threw every swordskill in the book at the legenday Guardian, but he wouldn't have any of it. After fighting is way into overdrive, Auron took aim and blew his opponent away.

Now we arrive at the Final Fantasy Four! This is every character's dream. We have some fresh faces here, since only one of these characters (Auron) has ever made it this far. On to the matchups:

2 Rydia (IV)

A couple of strong women get it on in this battle. Maria's status as first heroine has certainly helped her get this far, but now she enters the relm of the big games. She's been through some tough battles, but that only makes her stronger! Rydia seems like a runaway freight train at this point, destroying the FFVI crew and moving on to her first Final Four. Her magic will have to come through again if she wants to make the finals.

3 Vincent (VII) vs.
2 Auron (X)

Two of the most popular characters in FF history. These guys do things their way and have their own adgendas. Vincent's transformations might not be enough this time, as the experienced Auron has overcome much more greusome creatures, though it will be interesting to see if the Masamune can pierce Chaos's thick hide. These two met in last year's Elite Eight Round, with Auron coming away with a convincing victory. Here is a chance for revenge!

He was one of the best characters in my game. Better than Barret. And why does everyone get upset when you can't control a character? Its why everyone hates Umaro. I'm mean, come on, If you play games like Kingdom Hearts or Star Ocean, you can't control everyone at once, but no one complains.

From the very start Maria was determined to make short work of her competition, but to no avail. Before casting her most powerful Ultima16 spell, the caller of Mist called upon Asura to put up a protective Wall, sending the spell right back at her and making all further magic attempts useless. Though quite skilled with a bow, this could not do nearly as much damage. A few summons later, and Rydia was able to tsunami her way right into the finals.

In a much closer battle, Auron and Vincent were able to keep damage minimal, with Vincent firing from afar and Auron blocking most shots with his strong blade. As the battle raged on, Aruon's overdrive slowly built up with each passing turn, until it finally reached its max. Taking a swig of his brew, the legendary guardian lit up his Masamune and hit the former Turk with all he had, but Vincent managed to survive and gain a limit break of his own, transforming into the mighty Chaos. Aruon managed to survive a few swipes and gain a second overdrive, but Chaos slashed his way right through it to give Vincent the close victory.

And now, we go on to the finals! Here are your combatants:

Special Attack: Chaos Transformation

Vincent, the mysterious cloaked gunslinger, makes his first championship appearance. He was able to beat some tough players, such as Squall, Red XIII and number 1 seed Vivi. He has both barrels loaded, though with Rydia's powerful magic he will not have the distance advantage in this contest. Luckily for him, he can become a snarling beast to match any she calls, making this a truly freakish battle.

Only one match to vote in, so let's get them in!

Asura is Rydia's most useful summon. Plus there's Bahamut. And Meteo. Plus she uses whips.

Vincent's best move is dying quickly so you don't have to waste time healing him. And he uses a gun, which is weak. And his guns do crap damage.

As the battle rages on, here is some data on our finalists:

Last year Rydia went to the Sweet 16 to be defeated by Locke, the eventual runner up to Cloud.

Vincent made it a round further, only to lose to Auron, the very person he beat to make it into the finals.

I ranked all characters from last year based on a stat I call 'Q', which involves total votes, seed, distance gone, and strength of victory. Rydia's Q from last year was 63.9, placing her rank 10th (3rd in her division). Vincent had a Q of 78.9, which was good for 7th overall (2nd in his division). For a comparison, the character with the highest Q was tournament champion Cloud with 146, and the lowest was Josef with 5.6.

I will end this thing tomorrow or Sunday so get those votes in! It's much closer now.

Ok, i´ve found a reason to vote for rydia. since auron is the coolest character in ff and got beaten by a charcter like vincent, ofcourse i want vincent to lose so i´ll vote fo R-Y-D-I-A

Wow, I thought this match would go the complete oppisite direction its going know. I thought Vincent would have finished Rydia in less than seconds. Well, I'm still sticking by the side of probably my fav. character of all time.

Ok, here are the results of the finals:

Rydia wasted no time calling upon Leviathan to start the battle, dealing Vincent a heavy blow. Vincent tried to get to higher ground, and managed to fire off some shots from an elevated position. Bahamut was called, but Vincent countered that with his own version of Bahamut, in materia form! The two dragons fought each other to a stalemate. Rydia, without her best attack, searched for something to do. She called the angry Titan, but the resulting damage only gave Vincent a limit break opportunity. The mighty Chaos showed his ugly head and proceeded to pound the young summoner. During the transformation Rydia was able to charge up the Meteo spell and let the demon have it, turning him back into Vincent. Both combatants tired, Vincent tried to finish off his opponenet with some Death Penalty blasts, but Rydia kept calling on her monsters to take the blows. Finally, a very weakend Vincent had to reload, and while doing so, Rydia used her last resort, and the only summon she had left... Chocobo! Vincent never saw it coming, and the feathered fiend managed to deliver the final blow, giving you your winner, and new FF Tournament champion:

Rydia!

I never got into fan art of FFs, but Hot Damn... Rydia sure has a lot of fans. I voted for ther because she's uber-useful. NOT becuase shes sexy... Wowie Zowie... I saved a few of those just because they were so damn cool.
