So, what book characters really capture your attention and appeal to you, either in a good or bad way?

A few of mine are probably Drizzt Do'Urden from the Forgotten Realms series and Belgarath and Polgara from the Belgariad and Mallorean series. There are more but I'll more than likely remember them much later, and thus post them then.

Scout and Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mocking Bird, Lockwood from Wuthering Heights and Prospero from Shakespeare's The Tempest (well, the script is in a book:)).

Scarlett O'Hara, 'cause she's so awesomely evil.

Dirk Pitt from all of Clive Cussler's novels. Or, at least, the ones he wrote by himself, and not the crappy other series.

Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance is my favorite character of any book ever. He's the most complex character I've ever encountered, and he's very much both good and evil at the same time. It's hot.

Jo March from Little Women. Is that how to spell their last name? I don't really remember.

Haven't been able to really feel as close to any other book characters. Perhaps maybe Sirius Black from Harry Potter.

Edit: A character I was really annoyed by was Becky Bloomwood, the main character in the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. That character annoyed me so much because I kept thinking "when will she stop being so unreasonable?" and "why is she putting herself in such situations?" yet I got so relieved when things actually did work out for her.

Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance

Yes.

I also like:

Drizzt Do'Urden from Forgotten Realms,
Gianne Bellisario from Heir Apparent,
Lyra from the His Dark Materials trilogy,,
Meg from the Time Quartet series,
and Prosper from The Theif Lord

Just off the top of my head :)

Other great characters: Haplo and Alfred from Death Gate Cycle(also by Weis/Hickman, same as DL).

Yes. Excellent thread. Time to get my nerd on. (But then again, this is a message board for Final Fantasy)

I'm warning you this will be long, so I'll try to help.

---Ivan, from Enchantment; he has so many qualities that I admire in a person, and even though he's not real, he's a great guy.
---Christopher and Kate, from The Perilous Gard.
---Calis from The Serpentwar Saga. Completely feel in love with him right away, and I was very disappointed to in SHards of broken Crown that much. But
---Jimmy and Dash, from the same series, make up for that.
---John Snow, Sansa Stark, Theon Greyjoy, and Jaime and Cersei Lannister from A Song of Fire and Ice.
---Cazio Pachiomaddio da Chiovattio ( ), Stephen Darige, Leoff Ackenzal, and Neil MeqVren from The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone.
---Sabriel, from the Abhorsen Trilogy.
---Jimmy, from Salem's Lot.
---Morgan from The Riddlemaster Trilogy. For exactly the same reasons as Ivan. Also, Deth from that same series. Beautiful.
---Ducon from Ombria in Shadow.
---The marquis from Neverwhere.
---Lindo Jong, from The Joy Luck Club. All of the older woman are hilarious, but I love Auntie Lin.

Damn. I just have too much love.

I'm a big fan of Nynaeve Al'Meara from The Wheel of Time.
That attitude... that strength... that temper!
A strong vein of independence, combined with sarcastic humour and a genuinely compassionate desire to use her intellect to help others. A beautiful character, in my opinion.

Well, since Hunter Thompson is the center of a lot of his stories, him for sure.

Lucy Pevensie of The Chronicles of Narnia
'Jack' of Fight Club
Tender Branson of Survivor
Alex DeLarge of A Clockwork Orange

and that's all I can think of offhand. Effort sucks.

I can never pick a favorite favorite, but some on my list are Curtis from Chris Bachelder's Bear v. Shark , Holden and Phoebe Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, Louis from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Yossarian from Joseph Heller's Catch 22 ...

That's all I can think of. :D

Zed~ The Sword of Truth series.

Tasslehoff~ Dragonlance series. Such happy nonsense with a desire to do good, and with a twinge of sorrow. Like when he was explaining when he went home after his first adventures and he was telling all the other kender about them, but none of them seemed to care :(

"Yossarian from Joseph Heller's Catch 22 ..."

Definitely agree there.

I'd also add:

Humbert Humbert from "Lolita"
Aeneas from the "Aeneid"
Hector from the "Iliad"
Hamlet from "Hamlet"

Take care all.

man, the captain only reads books for smart people. anyway, obviously everyone from LOTR (duh) and other then that, id have to say....like....harry potter? nah...well, kinda.

P.S. only certain Dragonlance books are good. I.E. anything written by Weis and Hickman. and Kaz the Minotaur. but thats it.

The Captain

I wouldn't call them books for smart people, though many of them are lengthy reads, but the same can be said about both the LOTR and HP novels, so I'd say it's all even and really just comes down to personal preference.

I'd also like to add:

The mother and father from "To The Lighthouse"

and several characters from the works of Hemingway and Faulkner.

Take care all.

I like a lot of book characters, some examples are Drizzt (Dark Elf trilogy) FitzChivalry (Farseer trilogy) Cadderly (Cleric quintet) and the majority of the characters from Discworld. The one that captured me the most is probably Roland of Gilead, from The Dark Tower.

Jo March from Little Women. Is that how to spell their last name? I don't really remember.
Yep, they are the Marches. I LOVE Jo. I swear, I was heartbroken when she didn't accept Laurie. :weep:

I'm a big fan of Nynaeve Al'Meara from The Wheel of Time.
That attitude... that strength... that temper!
A strong vein of independence, combined with sarcastic humour and a genuinely compassionate desire to use her intellect to help others. A beautiful character, in my opinion.

TOTALLY. She is so awesome! The other girls freakin' annoy me, except for Egwene. WHAT IS UP WITH THE STUPID RAND FAN CLUB?! ;_; I hate them all.

Zed~ The Sword of Truth series.

YES. Either Zed or Kahlan.

--> Another character I absolutely love is Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series. I wish she was real, so much. If she was, I know we'd TOTALLY be twins...sort of. We are, as Anne would say, kindred spirits. xDD I've loved this book ever since I was a child, and whenever I was going through a bad time in life, I'd read it and it made me feel better. :)
