No. Each Final Fantasy is an entirely different storyline, there are some recurring themes such as the names of spells and certain character names, but you can start on any Final Fantasy you wish and understand the story.

I suggest Final Fantasy VI, personally, but others would advise Final Fantasy VII.

Yes, completely unrelated. Though there were rumors (which Square seems to now encourage) about each consecutive release being a prequel of sorts to the last.

Like Behold the Void said, each game is unique.
I would suggest you FFVI too.

Actually, Final Fantasy X does have a sequel, X-2. I'll probably get 50 people tell me how much it sucks and how they don't regard it as an FF or something, but I like it and I'm just informing you of it's existence.

FFX2 is the only DIRECT sequel the other FFs do follow each other but some them are Mileniums apart (FF and FF2 are very close but FF4 onwards are very far) That's what sqaure said anyway.

No, except maybe 10 & 10-2 (im sort of thinking they were a prequel to 7)

there is nothing really tieing the FF's together, though I am compiling a fic that will somehow tie all the FF's together

There's no evidence to support that at all.

Also, FFVII and FFV both have sequels.

And I would start with one of the older games. I started with FF5:D

o.o What is FFV's Sequel? I have never heard of it! I feel so un-informed. :(

Oh, and to Answer the Topic Creators Question, Almost none of the Final Fantasy games are Linked together, so you might as well start with whichever one you want.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. It's got Mid in it and everything.

It's an OAV that's only ever been released on VHS. If you thought Spirits Within sucked, it'll give you a whole new appreciation for it.

What? It's hilarious. I LOVE Legend of the Crystals. And FF7 has a sequal out ^_^ and a few coming out... Since we're including Animes, might as well throw in the cell phone game.

Play IV, V, and VI.
Play VII.
MILES AWAY FROM VIII. At least before you play VII and IX. XD
Definitively play IX.
Play X if you think this one is cool. o.o

There's my advice. o_o

No they all have own stories but still looks a lot like IX and IV are kinda same.. just different characters and places. Main events are still same.

FFIX looks a lot more like FFI than it looks like FFIV. o_o
